I'm glad you have started the program. It will help so please keep at it! Be gentle with yourself, and be gentle with the people you love. Remember that we can't change others, we can only change ourselves. Can you think of any way in which you could change your thinking so that this situation isn't so hard on you? Staying positive is really important.

Fear and Exposure for my situation

Sunny123 took the words right out of my mouth! It seems like it would be very helpful for you to remove yourself physically from the situation every day for a while. Can you set that as a daily goal? Go for a walk, visit a friend, browse through a bookstore, have a tea in a coffee shop... Please try to make time for the program. It will help.

Treatment Options

 

It’s important not to let anxiety go untreated. There are many different forms of treatment for anxiety, both traditional and non-traditional. For those of you using the site, you are familiar with both behaviour and cognitive forms of therapy. The goal of these is to modify and gain control over unwanted behaviours and change your thought patterns.

 

In behaviour therapy, we learn how to cope with different situations through exposure exercises in controlled doses. This benefits individuals as it teaches them life long skills to deal with various situations. Behaviour therapy can take practice before results are seen. Often times, an individual must expose themselves to difficult situations multiple times before they learn the coping skills to deal with it.

 

Cognitive therapy is similar to behaviour therapy in that it can take a while to work as individuals are actively involved in the recovery process, challenging their thought patterns. Through this type of therapy, people learn to examine their thoughts and feelings and learn to separate realistic thoughts and feeling from false thoughts.

 

Relaxation therapy is also encouraged for many panic sufferers. Through relaxation therapy, one is expected to learn how to resolves stresses that can contribute to anxiety. Breathing techniques, stretching and mind calming activities are used to help achieve a relaxed state. As with both cognitive and behaviour therapy, relaxation techniques can take a long time to learn and properly employ.

 

Medication can also play an important role in the treatment of panic. Helping to resolve symptoms and restore chemical imbalances in the brain can help to deal with the immediate symptoms of panic and move forward in treatment.

Sorry to hear you are struggling. I'm glad you posted- as they say, there is no such thing as a stupid question! The forums exist for this exact purpose, to provide support and information.
 
I'll try to answer your questions. Physical symptoms can be the side effects of emotions, which are triggered by thought. We think a thought (I'm afraid of flying); we experience the emotion (fear); and we experience the physical symptoms (such as trembling, dry mouth, rapid heartbeat, etc). What is it exactly that you fear about the next two weeks? Lots of stress about the holidays?

Most people don't experience side effects that are much different from smoking. The Nicotine Replacement Therapies are just nicotine and your body reacts pretty routinely to that. If you do experience an undesirable side effect, there are ways to easily combat that with the help from your pharmacist or doctor.
 
I understand your desire to hear from someone who has a similar 'fear', however, we are all so different, I'm not sure that would be 'accurate' evidence. I encourage you to do what you think is best for you. And there is a great support group, full of advice and support, on the smoking cessation site.

Fact: It's true that most people exhibit some anxiety in social situations, but for patients with Social Anxiety Disorder, this anxiety causes significant distress and interferes with daily activities and relationships. Patients with SAD recognize that their fears are unreasonable, but the anxiety is not under their control.”

Holiday Stress

~m: this stuff can now be fully felt and flow on out leaving memory but not devistation or paralyzing anxiety. This is so powerful and life-changing stuff!! It's so great that you had this realization. How did this finally come to you? Do you think you will now perceive the holidays differently? You are doing so well- I'm proud of you!

Glad to have you on-board! I think you have much insight and show signs already of a mind-set that will take you far in getting this under control. CBT is excellent. It's great that you are practicing the breathing exercises- don't forget to use them routinely so they feel more natural when the anxiety hits.

OCD and health worries?

I"m glad that venting helps!! Keep that in mind and post often. Even people without anxiety issues find it helpful to vent! Thoughts can gain so much power when they are bouncing around in our heads and gaining momentum.
 
I suggest that if your symptom worsens, you see a doctor. Psoas makes me think of sciatic pain.. but I would think your chiro would know about that, as you likely would with your fitness background (if memory serves me correctly). What if you followed his advice and went for a massage? Or took an epsom salts bath? Mentally, how have you coped successfully with your health-related worry? You went for bloodwork, so congratulate yourself on facing that fear!!
