Fear of Mental Illness

Hi Charlie,   There are many individuals in this support group that share the same questions and concerns that you have. We are all here to help and learn from one another.   It can definitely be scary to feel like you are going crazy, however many individuals who suffer from anxiety experience these thoughts...........what you are going through is quite common.   Try practicing deep breathing when you experience these thoughts..........focusing on your breath will help to lessen the anxiety.   Also, challenge your anxious thoughts by answering some of these questions: 1. Is it "true"?
2. How do I know it’s true?
3. Is it 100% true? (remember something that is 75% or 99% true is
    not 100% true)
4. What's the evidence for it being true?
5. What’s the evidence against it being true?
6. Has it ever happened before?
7. What's different now?
8. If it were true, how bad would it really be?
9. What's the worst thing that could happen?
10. If the worst thing happened, how bad would it really be?

instant messenger?

Hi Jane72,   From your personal profile you can add instant messenger and add a buddy - this is a great way to stay connected and get support right away when you are having a weak moment.   Good luck,   Faryal - Bilingual Health Educator

chicken or the egg?

Hi Birdie,   That's an interesting question!   I believe a big part of the panic attack is the anticipation of it. It may help you to practice deep breathing exercises daily to bring your mind into a calmer state. With your tummy tucked in and shoulders back, inhale deeply for a count of 5 and then exhale slowly through the mouth for a count of 5. The great thing about deep breathing is that you can do it anywhere.........even a few minutes before your client shows up!   Positive thinking is also key...........as you said - focus on the task and you will ride through the fear.   Faryal - Bilingual Health Educator

Fear of Mental Illness

Thanks to all for sharing your personal experiences and fears and how you have overcome your concerns.   The vague and "dream-like" feeling as if one is detached from oneself can be a rather disturbing experience. This in itself can increase one's anxiety. It is important to speak to your healthcare provider who can help you find the tools that will help you conquer your anxiety.   Hang in there and keep talking to us!   Faryal

Fear of Mental Illness

Good Morning Caden,   Your social worker's suggestions are great and as you keep practicing the deep breathing it will open up your energy towards positivity and not negativity. Try to imagine or think of an image that brings you happiness or makes you feel powerful. For me it is an animal........usually a tiger because I associate that image with strength, prowess, courage and power. The image can be anything that gives you a positive feeling of strength and calmness at the same time. Once you have that image, close your eyes during the deep breathing and keep focused on the image. This takes some practice but it will start to flow once you get into a routine.   Also getting healthy nutrition, adequate rest and sleep and some form of exercise are important to keep the brain hormones and neurotransmitters as balanced as possible. Stay away from foods that cause jitteriness or raise your heartbeat such as caffeine and alcohol.   Hope this helps and please keep posting to let us know how you are doing!   Faryal

Hi Miki,   I know your husband is coming home today. Hopefully you both will get the opportunity to have a good heart-to-heart discussion and you can emphasize your love for him and that your life with him is very important and valuable to you. Please let us know how you are doing.   Stay positive but be patient also.   Faryal

How is Depression Diagnosed?

How is Depression Diagnosed?

Members,

If you think you have depression, take the Depression Test on the Depression Center and share your Final Report with your family doctor. It is important to remember that the symptoms of depression can mimic a variety of medical conditions, such as thyroid problems and some viral infections . In addition, the side effects of some medications can also mimic the symptoms of depression. So, the first thing you should do is have a full medical evaluation.

Although it's important for you and your doctor talk about your physical symptoms, you should not overlook other aspects of your depression. Before your appointment with your doctor you may want to re-read your results from the Depression Test and tell your doctor anything else that you notice about your mood and other symptoms.

Information on both the physical and emotional aspects of depression can be very useful to your doctor when she/he makes a diagnosis. Depression is usually experienced as feelings of intense sadness, even hopelessness. Depression is often accompanied by an impaired ability to think, concentrate, and enjoy the normal pleasures of life. Your doctor will also want to know if you are eating more or less, or sleeping more or less than usual and if you are feeling more or less energetic than usual. If you have symptoms of bipolar disorder, make sure you tell your doctor about those symptoms too.

Many people with depression also suffer from anxiety, so be sure to make your doctor aware of these symptoms as well. If you have been drinking or using drugs to try to control your symptoms, let your doctor know about that too.

Remember: Doctor's are sworn to confidentiality, so you should feel safe when opening up to your doctor.

Once you have been properly diagnosed, your doctor - perhaps in consultation with a mental health specialist - can help you determine which treatment is best for you.

Do you suspect you are depressed? Are you currently looking to be diagnosed?

My cat.

Hi Diva,   I'm glad you are feeling more comforted and supported by all the lovely friends you have made on this site. Your feelings and beliefs are not silly........they are meaningful and you are still grieving the loss of a beautiful companion that was Oscar.   Please do not feel you have to suppress your feelings...........letting them out will help you heal.........along with the passage of time and the support and encouragement of great friends.   Focus on the positive memories and give your hubby a kiss for being so helpful and understanding. It is important to live in the now and appreciate all the beautiful things you have in your life at the moment.   Faryal - Bilingual Health Educator
