Weekend Parade

Not a single puff -- NOPE -- here in the wet and windy northwest. is anyone actually saving their cigarette money?

Oh, yeah, I definitely save my cigarette money. Every Wednesday, I stop at the ATM, withdraw $50 (2-$20's and 1-$10) and when I get home, I very happily put it in my big beautiful jar on my night stand. This spring, I plan to take a wonderful vacation with the nearly $1,200 I'll have in the jar. Whoo hooooo! I'm a very visual person, so SEEING that money every night is a great reinforcement for me. Day Six - Easier

2tone: You make an excellent point. We DO think about smoking a lot and perhaps confuse that with a craving. Just because the thought pops in our little pea-brain smoker heads, doesn't mean we WANT to smoke. I'm glad you brought that up. Guess what, though? One day --very soon -- you'll be in bed just starting to fall asleep when you'll suddently realize you went the entire day without ever even thinking about smoking. That day is coming and you will be so thrilled when it does. It's a very, very good sign. Happy New Year to you and yours, 2tone! Day 1 - 18 hours and counting...

Interesting: Congratulations! You're off to a great start! Your attitude is so good and so positive. I really believe that your attitude, your mindset going into and during your quit is the most important element of being successful. Keep that same good mindset you have and you'll be just fine. Way to go on day 1! Day 2 comin' up! Keep the faith. Day Three - Whew!

2tone: Wow, you said a mouthful. Protecting your quit is so important and never letting down your guard. It DOES get easier to cope and that's why I think we begin to get a little complacent. Today is 12 weeks for me and I've done very well, but for some reason, today has been a tough one. I have no idea why and it just blindsided me. So I did the same thing you did -- checked my attitude -- took a lot of deep breaths, apologized in advance to my husband, and chewed a tremendous amount of sugarless bubble gum. But cave in? Not a chance! You're doing great -- keep fighting the good fight, you're worth it. Keep the faith. Tony here in England and determined to beat this demon.

Tony, Tony, Tony: Please lighten up on yourself already! Be tough with yourself, but don't leave permanent bruises. I'm with Jaset (well, with everything except that "men are superior" stuff). But I do agree that you need to get mad -- get monumentally angry at the addiction and what it has done to you. Look at all the angst it has caused you over the years, not to mention the fact that it is literally killing you, one slow piece at a time. Anger works if you direct it where it belongs. Take back the control you have given over to the addiction. That's the best part of quitting -- I am back in control and it's damn well going to stay that way. We're with you, Tony. You CAN do this! Keep the faith. Hello, I am quitting smoking

Kim: Great choice you've made and you know that, don't you? Here's my advice for being around smokers. I actually don't mind too much because I've learned to watch them with a completely new (non-smoker) eye, not in criticism, God knows I feel for them, I know they all really envy those of us who have quit and left them on board the rapidly sinking ship. But if you step back and really watch a smoker while they're smoking, you'll see that, well, it ain't pretty. And there's sort of a panicky feel to it, not an enjoyment. And chances are, you're watching them outside in a freezing rain to really top off that special smoking moment. Frankly, when I see a smoker now (my husband included), it doesn't tempt me. It REMINDS me of my many, many reasons to remain a non-smoker. And it reinforces that I have left behind a very disgusting and dangerous addiction. Hurray! Try it -- step outside of your old, comfortable smoking self and watch with new eyes. I think you'll be amazed. Go get 'em, girl and keep the faith! Encourage me, please

Interesting: You're doing great! The obsessive thoughts are SO much a part of the first few days and sometimes longer. Our entire identities were tied to smoking (pretty sad, isn't it?), so it's only natural that you're going to think constantly about smoking. Distract yourself in any way you can think of and know that you will reach a point where you will go hours and then days without thinking about it. It's true. Hang in there, that will be a great reward. I know the first time I realized I had gone all day without even thinking about smoking, I was very excited.j It told me I had made a major breakthrough in beating this damned addiction. I like the advice to do internet research on addiction. See my post in Coping with Cravings -- it's a great piece from some research I did. I love Imallclear's suggestion that we're all a part of your Verizon team, standing behind you. That made me laugh -- good one, Imallclear. It's a great visual. Keep the faith! Mr. Ed

Mr Ed: You are a horse (of course), but so much more. We all work very hard to be included on your very special list and feel slighted when we don't. Do you see the power you have over us? (I know, of course, that you would only use that power for good, not evil.) Thank you, thank you and thank you again for making such a difference here. We are blessed. A big New Year's hug for you, Faith My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/8/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 85 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,422 Amount Saved: $680 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 4 Mins: 33 Seconds: 45
