Allen Carr dies

Hi all, It has been a very long time since I last visited here. I rarely think about smoking or quitting these days, but just now I heard the sad news on the radio that brought it back into my thoughts. Allen Carr has just died of lung cancer aged 72. He quit smoking (100 a day) 23 years ago, but it is being said that being continually exposed to passive smoke in his clinics may have led to the disease. I have never read his books, but I know that many of the key principles are quoted regularly here at SSC and were a huge help to me in making my quit stick. It's ironic that someone whose messages even "second hand" can help people to quit has possibly died because of "second hand" smoke. RIP Mr Carr, you will never be forgotten until the world's last cigarette has turned to ash. TWO Years on the Road

Congratulations Lolly my friend, sorry to be late on this thread. Remember Rome? It all seems so long ago, you were celebrating 3 months, me on 50 days I think (and suffering with the grandaddy of all colds!) but we had a good time and a fantastic lunch, with the restaurant owner full of admiration for our quits :) Please give our regards to Lollypop. Help with husband

Hi there PC, lovely to see you again. Like you I've not been around here lately. I'm not sure there is much you can do, my OH still smokes one cigar a day (one of those "annoying" social smokers! Although I'm glad now that I'm not one - otherwise I might never have had the incentive to quit) He sometimes suggests that I'm one of "those" ex-smokers, although my other still smoking friends don't seem to think so - an element of guilt creeping in there? I think all you can do is watch and wait and be there when the time comes. The only other thing you could do is drop some literature about Zyban down (or a mag article) somewhere where it might be seen (or is there anything even better out now?) - I quit with Zyban almost in spite of myself! my dad's lung cancer, holding my own..but need your help.

I am so sorry, it must be awful for you, I lost my dad to cancer too (although not lung cancer, but he was a pipe smoker) Don't blame your dad for smoking to the last - like the rest of us he is a nicotine addict, quitting for him now would be all pain and no gain. You are right to go back to 14mg, now is not the time to step down - protect your quit with all you have. 12/1/06 Weekend Pledge

Definitely smoke-free here in W Sussex :) But like the others, I reserve the right to put my tongue out if I feel like it ;) I also feel it's justified to swear if I'm run over by a shopping trolley! Who or what inspired YOU?

I really don't know, I wasn't really inspired to start the quit process, it was a "drip feed" of a whole load of things: Some vague chest pains a few months previous (which turned out to be heartburn, but started me thinking) A slight shortage of cash at the time and no opportunity to cross the channel for cheaper Belgian or French cigs (where I used to get most of my smokes) Finding out about Zyban, which seemed to offer the "Holy Grail" - the chance to cut down before quitting, something that is normally almost impossible to do. That it was becoming increasingly anti-social, that it wouldn't be too long before it would be impossible to smoke in any Pub or Restaurant, I didn't want to be that last smoker still standing outside in the cold and the rain. A general feeling that it was "time" - that I had played Russian Roulette with my life for long enough (over 35 years as a regular smoker) But the funny thing was that I didn't really expect to succeed, in my heart of hearts I was playing at it! :gasp: On day two it became apparent that not only could I quit, I was actually doing it! I started looking for some more help and stumbled in here. Joining SSC was when I really became inspired. There were the "old timers" in particular there was Lizzie, Rachel, Penitent and DarkMeyer from the UK, there was Katy, AValleyMom, luna (small L) and Bubba from the US. The support staff - in particular I must single out Josie, it seemed she always believed in me, right from the beginning. There were those just up ahead of me on the road, Bond Chaser (from Australia if I remember rightly) and the wonderful Scottish/Neapolitan (now a French resident!) Lolly - who I met up with in Rome. Then there was that quixotic little group of people around me, you know, the ones that were all daft enough to think that a quit date just before Christmas was a great idea, (and then were stubborn enough to make it stick) the "Class of Mid-December '04" In particular I must mention my friend Rusty and Hope, but there were several others who I know all made it to at least a year (Princess Caffeine is currently posting for help for her husband to quit) [i]By the way, for anyone just quitting now or just about to quit - a good quit never starts a

Saying goodbye :(

Dear Monica, My thoughts are with you across the Atlantic at this worst of all times. I know how awful it is to see your dad, who always seemed so big and strong, weakened beyond belief and shrunk to a shadow - that is part of the horror of cancer. If you can take anything positive from this, please take pride in your quit, for yourself, for your family and most of all for your dad - that he can take some comfort that you will be spared his fate. I'm wishing for a peaceful end for your Dad. Hang tight lady, you are doing brilliantly. I hope that, in spite of everything that is happening, you are still remembering to reward yourself for your milestones. It is important and you, of all people, do deserve to be rewarded at this difficult time.
