New to forum

Hi, I'm 45 and have had panic attacks and anxiety for about 20 years, Back when they first started I didn't know what they were, I had just had my little girl, and had to have some dental work done, and thats were I had my first Big attack. I didnt have them all the time at first, but as time went by they got worse. Back then it wasn't really something that was talked about alot, Through research my husband and I figured out what it was. Over the years I have been able through reading different
books to overcome some of my avoidences (mostly stores and big crowds) but still have things I would like to overcome like
being able to drive again. I'm looking forward to talking to everyone.

  Hi Brandie,

I hope your day is going well, I remember being where you are now, It will get better!!!
If you think your husband  would be supportive tell him how you have been feeling and have
him read up on panic & anxiety so that he can be your support person to help you overcome your fears,
After all the sane goes( two heads are better than one right)!!!And you won't feel like you have to hide anything
from him.  As for leaveing the house&doing your daliy routine keep doing as much as you can
it will help you when you start your exposure work, I know it's scary!  You said that your worst
time is when you first get up, try putting a pad and pen by the bed and when you first wake up
write down 5 things that make you happy or smile, to help start your day! And keep telling yourself
you are a strong and confident person who can handle anything that comes your way!
Hope this helps.

Am I the only one?

Hi, When I first started to have anxiety I had the scary anxious thoughts, I would watch the news and think the same thing as you, could I do that?  it use to scare me, but then I realised that I couldn't hurt anyone and never had, that I was
just scaring myself, so I started to limit myself on watching the news for awhile and it got better. Remember people with anxiety and panic are very careing people. hope this helps.

Physical Symptoms of Panic

hi

I to have had panic attacks for a long time, And have also had anticipatory anxiety for many years, at first I would get
all worked up even if the event was 2 to 3 weeks ahead I would what if myself into a real state of anxiety so that by the time the event came I would make an excuse and not go. But then I started to turn the what if's around, when I say what if this happens( if )( being bad or negative) I started to change it and say well  what if  and make it something good or I even make
it something funny! or goofy! I also have started to tell myself if the event is a week off that I'll wait until 2 days before and then worry about it,  giving myself  the ok not to worry.  This has helped me to cope with things . As for worrying about what if I have an attack while I'm out, I get this to and  keep telling myself that if it does happen that I'm a strong and confident person and I can handle anything panic and anxiety throughs at me (sometimes better than others) LOL. I figure if I'm going to look at the negative I need to look at the positive. Hope this helps.

Diva news...

      Hi Diva,

Don't feel bad for not being able to answer everyone, I think everyone will just be happy to hear that your ok.
hopefully your meds will start to work for you. Don't feel bad about sleeping alot, after all you had trouble sleeping
in the past, it's just your body trying to catch up, and also the body repairs it's self when we sleep so take the time for
yourself! after all would'nt you tell a friend the same thing? So be good to yourself you deserve it!
And  don't feel bad about asking your mom for help, she just wants to help you any way she can so you can get
back on your feet, besides thats what moms like to do for their kids !!! It makes us feel good !
About feeling guilty  for not contributing, don't when you feel better I know you will be their for everyone else
it's just the type of wonderful  person you are, it shows in your posts! Like they say you can't get water from an empty
well, so take care of you!  we wish you the best!

Good Day with exposure!

Hi everyone, I just wanted to post about my day with exposure work, I have had a hard time driving
for a long time now, I have tried to start driving again several time in the past to become overwelmed
and give up, well today I started my exposure work with driving . I decided to start in a local park were
the traffic would'nt be heavy and I drove for 10 mins! Yes I had a couple of panic attacks but as soon as
I felt them coming on I started  monitoring my breathing ( I have a tendency to not breath when I panic) and
after adjusting my breathing I was able to continue on, so even though my husdand was with me I still am
really hopeful that in time I can get back to driving by myself !! I have a some questions but I will post it in
another section. I just wanted to let everyone know that it is possible to start concuring some of these fears
that hold us back!!!   My best to everyone!

open to suggestions

    Hi everyone

I have a problem, When I drive and someone pulls up behind me It through's me into a panic! I don't
know why this happens to me, even if I see them coming in the mirror  it just gets my panic going !
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to deal with this? I tried to turn the mirror, but then I'm
Afraid that I won't see if I need to get out  of danger's way. I also don't like to drive fast as I feel
like I might not be able to stop fast if I need to.  The funny thing about all this is that when I was younger
I drove halfway across the country and never had any trouble with my driving, I was a every good driver.
I would appreciate any suggestions on this. Thanks

Hi All I am new here

Hi Shaz, welcome to the forums, its a great place to get info on what you are going through, the people
here are great!  I too am going through perimenopause and have been for 6 years, I know what you
mean about being tearful and the ups and downs but I just ride the waves and tell myself that my body
is changing and that their are going to be changes. It's good that you are having your hormones tested and
that your doc is on top of things, as for meds I take buspar and have been for years, for pms and anxiety
its an older med but it works for the most part.  I'm sure someone will be on shortly with some more info
for you sorry I can't be more help.  I just wanted to welcome you.

question about anxious thoughts

   Hi Mich991

I wanted to tell you about my experience with scary thoughts: The first year or two of having panic& anxiety
attacks I remember having the scary anxious thoughts, it was really bad at night( my husband was working 3rd shift at the
time), I would be home alone with my daughter who was little at the time. When it was time for bed I would lay
their and the thoughts would start to race! What if I run out of the house and beat on the neighbors door! or run out
into traffic! what if I hurt my daughter while sleep walking! this went on until I would whined  up having a massive
panic attack!  This went on every time my husband worked 3rd( I didn't do it when he was home)!!  So one night
the same routine started and I remember being tired, well as the thoughts started as I lay their I stretched my arms
out and said out loud OK if it's going to happen let it happen now!  Well after about 5 minutes went by  I said out
loud well I guess theirs my answer nothing happened!!!!!  I realized it was just Fear!!! Fear and worry that I would'nt
have control.  After that I did exactly what CadenMcCullem wrote I would just let the thoughts float in and right back
out telling myself that their just thoughts. And they did go away!!  I think because I took the power out of the fear.
I hope this helps to here.
