I looked up some information about Kudzu on several websites:

1) WebMD: An extract from the Chinese herb kudzu may help drinkers cut down on drinking, according to a new pilot study. "It didn't stop the drinking," says researcher David M. Penetar, PhD, assistant professor of psychology at McLean Hospital and Harvard Medical School. "They still drank, but they drank less."Penetar's team studied 10 men and women, average age 26. On average, the men and women drank 3.5 beers after placebo and 2.4 after puerarin. When they had the herbal treatment, people also took more sips to finish a beer, took longer to down it, and reduced their sip size. During the week of puerarin treatment, they drank slightly less than during the placebo week -- three drinks a day compared to 3.4. No serious side effects were reported. For drinkers who want to cut down, this may help.

2) Altmedicine.about.com: Postmenopausal women in a kudzu study showed improvements in cognitive function and attention span. Kudzu may also decrease the frequency, duration, and intensity of cluster headaches. Extracts from Kudzu added to the diets of obese mice resulted in a reversal in weight gain and fat accumulation.

3) Women who are taking birth control pills that contain estrogen might be adversely affected by the phytoestrogens from the Kudzu root that might make their birth control pill less effective. You should not take kudzu if you have the following • Medications that slow blood clotting (Anticoagulant / Antiplatelet drugs) • Estrogen sensitive cancers and medications such as Tamoxifen and Methotrexate • Medications used for treating diabetes

Hey Mogas,

I am anticipating Friday and a week of knowing we are doing this together. I plan to go out for lunch tomorrow with a friend who has a restaurant Groupon that includes two drinks. I will probably drink my two on Thursday, but that will be it for the week. Starting on Friday I will try and not drink anything for the entire coming week.

Can you believe it? Me, looking forward to a full week without drinking? Things have changed... Mogahood is good for me. Who knows how I'll feel about it halfway through next week, but I'm very hopeful that it will be a positive experience all the way through. I also think I'm sold on trying the Kudzu thing. I will be looking out for it today, or I may order it online. It will be interesting to share our experiences with it. Thanks BP for letting us know about it. How are you feeling today? You have been doing amazingly well under your circumstances, so keep doing what is working for you! Regarding our Moga-sober week, there are no expectations for anyone, just something challenging and positive for us to share.

Camiol - fabulous that you are already going on five days sober at this point. It sounds like everyone else is having a pretty good week, and I am as well. I am having persistent bad headaches in the mornings that feel like a hangover, but they gradually disappear with coffee. Go figure - I've been drinking coffee for decades and never had caffeine symptoms, but maybe reducing my alcohol consumption is related?

My husband has decided to turn our burglary-attempt smashed-window incident into an excuse for expanding the front porch area into a small home-office for me! Seeing as my home-office has been in a corner of the living room, this will be wonderful. Anyway, gotta go get ready for work. Thanks for starting my day off right.

Hey Mogas,

I had an unexpected glass of wine last night. My husband came home with a single bottle of my favorite red wine, poured each of us one glass, then deliberately (and making sure that I knew he was doing it) put the bottle away and out of sight. He told me it was because we both earned it  and he was feeling very appreciative of me. It was such a nice gesture, although my feeling when I took my first sip was a bit apprehensive, because it was absolutely unplanned for me. The glass was fairly large - it's closer to 10 oz. than 5 oz., so in keeping with my self-honesty, I need to count it as two drinks. But it was lovely to drink a glass of wine with him while the kids were getting themselves ready for bed. And I was satisfied at the end with one glass, and I believe that he was, as well. I think I need to buy us some 5 oz glasses, so that I don't try and fool myself like I have for so many years.

Yay, Hope, for staying sober last night. Marylizy and all the rest of us, maybe we should try to look at our drinking in terms of how many oz (or ml) we had. A standard drink is equal to 12 oz (355 ml.) beer with 5% alcohol; 5 oz. (150 ml.) glass of wine (12.5% alcohol); 1.5 oz. (45 ml.) of 80 proof liquor (40% alcohol).

Saying that I drank a half a bottle of wine is different than saying I drank two and a half glasses (12.5 oz, or 325 ml = 2.5 servings) -- even though it's exactly the same thing. Is this a lapse? Not unless I do it more than three times a week! Moderate drinking is defined on this site as three or less drinks in one day, and nine or less drinks within one week. Saying that I had a mojito or a margarita could mean anything. The question is how many standard drinks did I have by the end of the evening? Was it three or less?

If you DO drink tonight, Camiol, make sure it is planned when you start! Decide exactly how many oz/ml of alcohol you WANT to drink, and put the rest away before it can tempt you. Make you virgin mojitos easy to access and ready to go. Moga is all about learning moderation, and I know that it's possible for some people. A binge eater is not someone who has a normal dessert with most dinners, and occasionally eats too much! Even if that person spent most of their life overweight, they can learn to eat moderately. The same can be true for drinking, for many people. In my mind, this forum is the way for me to find out if I am a person who can do it. Being honest with you guys on this site and honestly tracking my drinking patterns, will surely tell me if I can drink moderately.

Hmm - since a glass of wine can be anything, I think I'm going to start avoiding that term, as well. I'm going to be flat-out honest and just say "servings". Last night I had two servings of wine....because the alcohol content in 10oz is the same, whether I drank it from two small glasses, one large glass, or even straight out of the bottle!

Evil Disease - Planning a relapse

Splitimage, you are so strong -- how long have you been completely sober now? What a great and healthy way to deal with your urges by venting on this site. Good job....

Marylizy, how are you doing? Hanging in there?

BP, have you ever heard of RLS, or Restless Leg Syndrome? It runs in my family and I've had it bad since my second pregnancy. SSRI's can make it worse. I was near suicide after my daughter was born, because the RLS literally hadn't allowed me to sleep more than an hour at a time for almost six months. You might google RLS (also called Ekbom's Disease), or talk to your doctor about it, because it can seriously disrupt sleep and cause depression. There are medications for it that are fully compatible with antidepressants, and it is astounding how much of a difference it can make in your life, if you can sleep peacefully. Let me know if you'd like to know more, because I'm the RLS queen. (And pramipexole has changed my life....)

I didn't end up having drinks with my friend over lunch after all, but this evening I sat and watched the sunset with my husband and my cousin, with two servings of a really nice red wine. We were all happy and positive, and we put the bottle away with about 1/3 of it left. Unthinkable! I'm not sure we've ever done that before. I mean, honestly? To not finish the bottle when there's that little left. I'm not sure I could have done it by myself, but it happened very naturally.

Anyway, starting from this moment I plan to remain completely sober for seven days. Right now, honestly, I feel ambivalent about it. Why would I possibly want to go seven whole days without a nice wine buzz like I had tonight? The monster is so very pretty today, I have to remind myself how nasty she can be...

I am going on a road trip with my two kids starting in the morning, and I will do my best not to drink with the various friends I'll be staying with on the way. One of my friends is into single-malt whisky, which I think I can easily avoid. Another likes wine, but she's more into the sweet wines, which I don't like much. If I can just focus on my Moga goal -- ONE WEEK -- I think I can do it. I certainly don't want to blow it on alcohol that I don't even like very much. I'll check in on my Mogas when I can, but it might be spotty. Who else is starting this tomorrow? It's only a week - can we do it? Can we help each other through this?

Morning Mogas! I have a minute before I have to get everyone up, and I am pretty psyched about my upcoming week sober. Remember, Camiol, how badly you want to get through a whole weekend (and seven whole days) without drinking? I know you can do it! Bring tons of virgin mojito mixings to your dad's BBQ, and stick to the club soda. If you can get through Saturday, you will be through the hardest part. Marylizy, I hope you aren't feeling badly this morning, and I'm glad you're planning to do the week. I'm going to need some help - knowing that others are doing it too will help me a lot. We are Mogas and we CAN do moderation - which includes being able to say no when we want to say no. How about the others? Are you going to try?

Everyone's doing great. Moderation for the rest of our lives is what Mogas are about, and honestly--what we're REALLY about - is feeling healthy about our own progress and daily relationship with alcohol. If you feel healthy and good about it, then you are doing the right thing. It is wonderful to hear all the positive words, both about your own progress and feelings, and all the words of each other's support. Camiol, Elizabeth, BP - those of you who are drinking moderately - it sounds like you are perfectly under control at the moment, and I wish you luck in going the entire week without a lapse!

I made it through yesterday without drinking... Marylizy & Hope, how are you doing??? I sure thought about a glass of wine when I saw the nicely filled wine rack after I arrived from 8 hours on the road with two kids, but we all watched the opening of the Olympics instead. My kids are generally great little travelers, so I didn't have any real extra stress to use an excuse. I do still plan to go an entire week sober, but I also am aware that I have a big challenge coming up before the end of my seven days. My biggest problem days will be next Wednesday or Thursday, when I'm getting together with one of my oldest friends from before high school. She is not at all a heavy drinker, but is the type of wine drinker I am striving to be. She doesn't know I've had problems with it. She always offers me wine, and I have three glasses to her one.... This time I will do my best to stick with something that isn't alcohol.

Have a great weekend, and think MoGa...

Moderation

Smiles, that is the same question I am dealing with. Since I joined a month and a half ago, I have posted a lot of my thoughts and research about moderation on my blog. During that time I have been able to drink quite moderately, in large part because of the support from this site. My habits have changed drastically, and I'm feeling super positive about these changes. I am currently going seven days sober as a test to myself to see if I can also choose periods of sobriety in between moderate drinking. My personal success so far is very encouraging to me. I do see that many people on this site are having a harder time staying within the bounds of moderation, despite truly wanting to. I believe that the only person who can know if moderation works, is the individual working through their own problems. And the only way that a person can know for sure if moderation will work, is to try it for awhile and see. If it doesn't work, you will know soon enough. I think the key to it is keeping honest track of your drinking -- being totally honest with yourself. Check out my blog if you would like to see a wide range of my own thoughts about it.
