Rewards, Nicotine, and the Brain

That explains a lot Lady, Is there anything we can do (short of smoking) to re-open these receptors? I am feeling a bit cranky today. Would like to crush something with a monster truck! 121 days and still struggling

Princess, I am not going to be like the rest and say, good for you hang in there. If your like me you realize we are in serious trouble and should have quit much sooner! I too am having a slew of problems that appeared after quitting smoking. Being very tired and a sore throat is only part of it. Apparently the smoking was masking or normalizing some things with my body. Now all hell broke loose. I spent nearly an hour in my doctors office and now being sent to two other specialists for other problems. Chantix screwed up my lipid levels, so have to take different cholesterol med (Non-Formulary, way more expensive) Discovered a growth on both sides of the back of my tongue. My Dr and my Dentist said it does not look cancerous but this specialist will no doubt do a biopsy and find out for sure. Then because of the tiredness, I am being sent in for a sleep study. I also get impatient and short fused but only at times. I have caught myself being very snappy, put my beloved wife Sue in tears. (this was what got us to go back to smoking the last time) Lets see, what else? I gained 11 lbs on top of me already being over weight, now I need to drop 50 to get my BMI right. Teeth are killing me, apparently I already had a bad habit of grinding my teeth but since I quit I do it even worse, now to the point where I cracked a crown and caused one molar to get infected (again). I swear I would look like Hannibal Lector if they want me to wear one of those PSAP masks with a mouth guard! Smoking obviously doesnt fix these things but they sure did a great job at hiding them. Now I am on this long slow path to recovery. Some problems I am sure is too late to recover from but that was my fault for waiting so long to quit. For those wondering, I am 45, look younger but feel older. newbie

Hey Irish, Welcome aboard, you will meet all sorts of interesting people here. Shouldn't take you long to find out I don't sugar coat anything. Quitting smoking is a pain, but you will get through it. Expect the worst and hope for the best. Yeah those cravings will come up and bite you now and again. Just got to put them in their place. Remember YOU call the shots, not the tobacco companies! If you smoke you basically reset your craving counter in your brain. When you quit remember NOT ONE PUFF again EVER! You need to be fully committed to quitting for this to work. Be sure to write down WHY you want to quit, this will be your safety net for when your mind starts saying, just one! Also, read and download the stuff that the SCC has put together, it was designed by experts, some of it you probably already know but reading it again is paramount to your success. Search the web for a few shocking videos on the subject of quit smoking if you feel you need that slap in the face! All combined, along with the wonderful people here you will get through this just fine. If you feel you are going to slip up, before you do, come to this board and post under cravings, someone will respond! Good luck! Dr Apprt- Scary moment

So, I went to a specialist today on a referral to have a bump on the back of my toungue looked at. The Female doctor comes in the room and first thing she asks me is if I smoke. Told her I quit 3 months ago but had a sore throat and bump on my toungue. She closed her eyes (pretty sure she said a prayer) then she said oh please I hope this is not bad, we don't need this, not today let it be a good day! I got very scared because I could tell she was serious and a bit worried over what she would find. She inspected my toungue carefully and said that is was definately NOT cancerous! We both took a deep breath. I asked her if she has seen throat cancer in patients, she said yes. Too many, mostly from people who live in rural communities. She was very proud that I quit but wished that I quit sooner. I mentioned this website and she said it is very helpful to have a support group and commends those who help out here! For those reading this and are debating on whether or not to join or to quit smoking even all I can say is I was lucky....I hope it stays that way. Unfortuantely far too many have not. If you quit, stay quit, if you are thinking of quitting. Pray it is not too late and quit today. The next person who sits in that chair to have their tongue and throat checked might be you! Trust me, you want to say you are a NON-SMOKER! Dr Apprt- Scary moment

We wont know until the time comes I suppose. One thing is for sure, we have a better chance on staying healthy and enjoying retirement as a non-smoker! It also seems that a physician will spend more time with you as a non-smoker. It is obvious they are glad to see us taking more care of ourselves. Apparently in my situation I am perfectly healthy and "situation normal" and not as overweight as I thought. :) It is just odd being more sensitive to everything going on in your body once you quit.
