Elly, pitty the poor smoker ! It's not that gross it's just a plain and simple addiction to nicotine... & that's all. This thinking helped me - cos it's the truth.
I spose my little piece of advice would be not to replace smoking with candy or any bad habit... drink lots of water, eat heaps of fruit & do a little bit of exercise(just like those non-smokers do) & you'll be happy.
Gum is o.k.....as long as it doesn't have nicotine in it - you won't get addicted to it !
I'm a big fan of Cold Turkey also, sounds like you've got it licked
;p

If it was some young person / teenager i knew deciding to smoke....
i'd buy them a packet, lock them in a room & make them smoke the whole packet until they puked.
If i caught them smoking thier first smoke......
i would say......I bet you can't smoke 15 of those things in a row

Hi Guys, A Political Party here is drawing up a bill to ban smoking anywhere in New Zealand. The bill would also make it illegal to produce or sell tobacco.
here is part of the write up that was published today.

22.02.06
In 1995, tobacco advertising was banned, as was tobacco sponsorship the following year. And in December 2004 all workplaces, including bars, restaurants, clubs and casinos, became smoke-free.
Each year the Government gets $1.2 billion from tax on tobacco products.
MP Hone Harawira, who is drafting the private member's bill, said it was "not about trying to penalise the poor addicts who are smoking cigarettes". "But the tobacco companies can go to hell. We will no longer sacrifice our generations so you can make profits."
Once drafted, it will need to win a ballot before being introduced to Parliament. Mr Harawira said he could not understand why no politician had drafted a similar bill. "I can't believe how we could have allowed this to carry on. This actually kills people and yet it's legal."
Prime Minister Helen Clark, who is stridently anti-smoking, said through a spokesman that she did not support prohibition. She said it would simply criminalise people with an addiction, and she favoured a public health approach to tobacco and addiction.
Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) director Becky Freeman said banning tobacco simply made it an issue for the courts to deal with, rather than keeping it as a health issue.

I guess that about covers it, plenty more where that came from !, although i can't see it going anywhere at last a politician has the guts to stand up and be honest.
i see what you mean, for a country of only 4 million people $$ 1.2 billion bucks of Tobacco tax would be sorely missed.
Will keep you posted.

thanks for your responces & i to agree with you all, freedom of speech, choice & etc, etc,
o.k. then......it's pretty obvious they are not going to ban smoking, we all know this cos of $$$$$$ & the big 'P' word ....power.
The politically correct people that run our politically correct lives (here in NZ anyway) are going to increase cigarette tax again !, cos it really works !!!!!! (i'm being sarcastic here), their excuse is that the ban on smoking in public places hasn't worked & as there is no change in the numbers of people smoking, a price increase will... ge-wiz... go figure !!!
They just keep on punishing smokers. It's about time smokers grew a back bone or can't they just leave the poor smokers alone, cos even as a non-smoker i am so sick & tired of hearing about it.
"NONSURGEON GENERAL'S WARNING: Cigarette smoking may cause you to become a second-class citizen"
Not content with banning smoking inside enclosed areas, the anti-smoking zealots have even sucessfully banned smoking in open outdoor areas and are moving toward banning smoking even in the privacy of your own home!
Why don't these p.c. police just be honest with us,... tell us the truth and that they just want to intrude our lives & gain control of our bank accounts & us. It seems to be working...
yet again, ....another 'moment of revelation' !, It's been said that if you tell people a lie often enough, they will begin to believe it.
o.k. i'm trying to be possitive here but boy i'm really, really, really, pissed with this !!!!! sorry but i've had a real attitude this week.

Little Mama, sounds like your doin o.k.,
Food is an easy solution, this is what i do most nights.....
Eat an orange but first peeling all the rine off including all the white bits (takes ages but very therapeutic), eat an apple by slicing up into little baby wedges & remove all the yucky bits (also takes ages) afterwards sip a nice hot cup of tea.
I do this while listening to talkback radio, watching t.v. or reading a book - either way it's a great way to relax.
or.. visit this place, it's Contagious plus you can swat up on other peoples experiences.

Elaine, do you really want to quit ?
I will share a little secret with you....
When i stopped smoking i decided i was not going to smoke for 1 year, even if it killed me. I prepared to put my whole life on hold for a year for this quit.
I prepared to be miserable & was even ready to accept all the destructiveness i was going to cause amongst family, friends & work collegues.
Guess what... 1 year on & i'm obviously still alive, i'm still in the samejob, there are still a few people left who talk to me plus i can't believe some of the things i've accomplished this 'smokefree' year.
I'm a quiet, unsociable, shy guy with no willpower who quit 'cold turkey', what does that say ! :8o:
the point is..... how ready are you ??? seriously - do you really want to stop smoking ?
;p
we are all here, ready to help you.
