Ban smoking - period

A point to add... Cig advertising was banned here in New Zealand approx. 15 years ago & replaced with alcahol ads (another good little money earner). Due to enforcement of Anti-smoking laws & 'smoke free' publicity in recent years not to mention outrageous life & health insurance premiums for smokers, i can honestly say it has made it a lot easier for me to maintain my quitting this time. Smokers here in New Zealand are blatantly 'punished' for their addiction, yet they still choose to smoke. From where i and many of us stand as non-smokers, we can finally see how blinding & manipulative this nicotine addiction really is. Spreading the word. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 413 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,342 Amount Saved: $2684.5 Life Gained: Days: 59 Hrs: 6 Mins: 30 Seconds: 35

Feeling empowered!

Hey Tanya, yes some ex-smokers did start smoking again, my father & brother are some of them. What most of these smokers failed to realise is that smoking is an addiction to nicotine, they live their life under the false pretence that smoking is a 'lifestyle choice' or a 'habit' that they enjoy & thus find it difficult to stay quit. I'd say a lack of smoking education / awareness contributed towards these failed attempts, they are quite happy going through life and feeding an addiction. Due to the 'in your face' non-smoking education via. laws & publicity i'd say this will become a thing of the past. It is very hard for never-smokers to understand out plights. keep it up, i bet you're feeling great. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 413 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,342 Amount Saved: $2684.5 Life Gained: Days: 59 Hrs: 6 Mins: 36 Seconds: 23

Will I must run out of tears eventually.

Hey, we all understand, you do what you gotta do !...... whatever it takes to get you through 'hell week'. If people are offering you advice that haven't smoked before don't even listen to them, they do not comprehend anything of what you're going through but it aint thier fault. I know everyone says this but it will be over very soon, sooner than you may think. During the next couple of weeks or so the sun will be brighter, the sky clearer and the air so much cleaner, just don't miss this moment of revelation. The harder time we have at the start of our quit the better our chances of staying quit, we shure as hell don't want to relapse & go through all this again !. ;) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 413 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,349 Amount Saved: $2684.5 Life Gained: Days: 59 Hrs: 7 Mins: 30 Seconds: 14

Does it ever really get better??

Lala, The first three weeks are the hardest, you're almost there. I was interested in what you said...
Zyban has taken me from a smoker to a nonsmoker.
Be strong.... it is 'YOU' that has taken yourself to a non-smoker, yes it gets easier & no we shure as hell don't miss anything about it. We all see the Anti-smoking groups & Governments implementing no-smoking laws & working towards a total world-wide ban on smoking. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens in our lifetime, they are very very determined. That is how seriously bad this smoking thing is ! The country i live seems to be leading the way & imposes some very strict laws regarding no smoking in public places etc, . Smokers will have to quit sooner or later. I'm only glad i've had the opportunity to quit sooner & not later against my will. Have a good look around, you'll find a lot of help here. NRT or not?
1. What made this quit stick? What was so different from the other times you tried if any?
I was sick of smoking, so i don't want to smoke anymore! The other 3 times i failed, my heart simply wasn't in it.
"I am thinking I should go the patch again. I have tried it before and generally did very well with it, except that I had such a terrible time sleeping."
A question for you.. How much do you want to stop smoking ? Remember, Cold Turkey it's all over in 3 days... this leaves you plenty of time to enjoy being a non-smoker. Fight the good fight. Done Lost my Mind

Damn it !, i think i'm getting addicted to this site. gpw, Just think..... you too can be angry & disapointed at your husband during his quit !!!!, & he will have to quit one day. :8o: Don't cut yourself short either, you have plenty of confidence in your ability to stay smoke free otherwise you wouldn't have made it this far. :) Leigh -
I know I can't stop living and put the kids needs and schedules on hold until I can manage this psychological and physical addiction- but it would make it easier if life would just sit on hold until I feel strong again
These distractions will help you, enjoy every moment. It's offical you are a non-smoker, just work on keeping it that way - it will get easier & easier. Anyway you guys what's to be depressed about ?, everyday above ground is a good one ! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/1/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 406 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 10,154 Amount Saved: $2639 Life Gained: Days: 58 Hrs: 4 Mins: 42 Seconds: 10

Have tried everything

Joestuff, I think most of us go through the period of "too much time on our hands" when we quit, it does change though. By reading posts on this site you get all the help you need, we all have something in common, we've all been blinded by the smoke haze. I havn't change my life one bit since quiting.... the quit does set you free from addiction & this will change your life ! ... you will learn to take enjoyment from the simpler things in life all over again just like before you smoked & that is what it's all about. Rusty has summed up quitting in a nut shell, brilliant. Cold Turkey works for me

I done the 'cold turkey' also. But honestly just 'wanting to stop' is the reason i've succeeded this time. The mind is a very powerfull thing ! May i suggest the book by Allen Carr called Easy way to Stop Smoking.
