I Confess... I Felt Smug.

Your absolutely right, Brent. I made a concious decision when I quit that I would not become one of those self-righteous "You're scum for still smoking" quitters. I hated the few of those I crossed paths with before and I refuse to be a hypocrite. So I still visit with the smokers I used to visit with, at least the ones that will have anything to do with me. There are a couple that make it obvious they prefer my absence even though I've never brought up the subject of quitting. Just seeing me makes them uncomfortable. I'm a pariah for quitting, who'd have thought? LOL And the guy that I mentioned before is a real loner that usually stands off away from everyone else anyway. Anyhow, the ones I still socialize with are good people and we still enjoy each other's company. They are now at ease with my presence and it's just like before I quit except I don't smoke and stay upwind as best I can. It's a surprisingly comfortable feeling. Hopefully, that comfort is visible and they may someday think they can do it too. Nobody likes a sad Doctor

Being on pins and needles is a bad way to spend a day, Cheryl. I'm so glad it turned out good. It was nice of the nurse to call that evening so you wouldn't spend the night worrying. I gonna try again too!

Hi, Stoppin'. Congratulations on being quit 6 days. Almost through hell week. :) I think the biggest problem is your attitude toward not smoking anymore. "I gonna try again too!" TRY? Don't try, DO IT! You cannot go into a quit with the attitude that you might fail. If you do, you will fail. N2k's favorite quote is by Henry Ford: "Whether you think you can or you think you cannot, you are right." "Try" leaves you a very easy out. Do not allow yourself that bolthole. The "awful thoughts" that creep in are junkie thinking. Everyone here has experienced it. It's nothing more than your poor addicted brain wanting it's nicotine fix. These thoughts cannot make you do something you don't want to do, nor can they cause you any form of damage. There will always be upcoming events or other reasons to postpone quitting. Again, that's your poor addicted brain making sure it doesn't lose its nicotine. Want a good example? Next time you need to go somewhere, try waiting until all the traffic lights are green. See how far you get. Six days into your quit, unless you're on NRT, all the nicotine is out of your system. If you slip now all you will do is reawaken the addiction process and all this may start over. You really don't want that to happen, do you? Don't panic. Don't even think about next week. And for sure don't go out drinking until your quit is solid and stable. What on earth is more important than quitting an activity that will kill you slowly and painfully? Focus on now, focus on maintaining your quit. That's the most important thing. This isn't an easy journey, Stoppin', but it can be done if you really want to do it. Stay close, read, post, let us know how we can help. Quitting Smoking

Hi, Caleb. Congratulations on your 2 days quit (fantastic accomplishment) and welcome to the SSC. If you haven't already, I strongly suggest you work through the Online Quit Program here. There's a ton of good information and tips there. Two things really helped me: looking ahead and my "strawerette". As you go along, look ahead by a minute, or so, ahead to see if you're approaching a time you would have lit up. When you see one coming, assume a crave will hit and be ready for it. My experience was anticipated craves were always weak, if they happened at all. The strawerette was a straw about the size of a cig, cut to cig length. Fold and crimp (bite) the "fire" end until it draws like a cig. I kept mine in my shirt pocket so grabbing it was much like grabbing a cig. Made a great prosthetic. Stay close to the site, Caleb. Read, post, repeat. You can come here to vent, scream, cry, laugh, babble incoherently, what ever it takes to get through. Don't worry about us, we've seen it all. :) You've made a great decision for your life, Caleb. Keep us posted and let us know how we can help. Gonna try AGAIN!

Hi, Tennielle. We're going to hold you to that promise. :) As long as you continue to try, that is what is important. Practice makes perfect. This time, when you freak out let us know and help. Don't run (you promised). Read and reread the first and last sentences of Golferman's quote. Everything in between helps, but the ends are the real substance. (That quote's always touched me, Joe. Thanks.)
