How am I supposed to feel?

Hey lost1, there has to be some instances in your life that you can remember where you felt some joy or instantaneous happiness...a sense of well being after a nice shower, meal, celebration, looking at a loved one and thinking about them. I'm not saying that you should be elated most of the time, but there should be days where you feel okay. This is my first post, and I have not looked around on this site alot; but I know that medication can be important in the treatment of depression...I take it. There are some days where I am just content..not overly happy, but not "in the dark hole" either. I always describe myself as kind of "in neutral"...maybe not as bad as a flatliner. I do not know, maybe that is the best that we can hope for. I look forward to getting some valuable info from this site. m.bovary

Can you look to the world like you are happy but on the inside be so sad and mixed up?

hi ssurrender, your mom loves you so much..she knows that she did not do a "perfect" job, so it scares her that maybe something she did, deprived you of, did not give you enough of, left you with a babysitter too many times, etc, etc, etc, has caused this psycological sadness...just reassure her that she was a good mother to you and try and explain what depression really is. It will relieve her guilt about some of the situations that occurred when you were little..we know that guilt? right? m.bovary

my heart is broken

Destroy the cigs! You aren't going to save them for your son, are you? Get rid of them now and then have the talk with your son. I have a 16 year old son. He had a birthday party for a friend in the backyard about 3 months ago. I watched all these young teens walking around with cigs in their mouths. (my son hates smoking, thank goodness). Someone said, smoking is a pediatric disease. You might be surprised how many of your son's other friends smoke. My experience with teens; the atheletes usually don't smoke, the kids who smoke pot also smoke cigs, the musicians usually smoke cigs, the kids that are involved in school, ie dance rehearsal, drama, sports, yearbook staff, photography..these kids usually don't smoke. they have all been educated about the evils of smoking in school. Somehow, these truths need to come alive for your son. You will know what to do. Be honest about the addiction problems that he will face if he continues to play with the fire.

Emphysema

Hi Itsironic, My mother had dementa which turned into alzheimers. First, she was in assisted living, got too bad and had to move to a care facility. She asked me for a cig one day and I told her that she quit smoking a while ago. She said, "no I didn't". I said, "yes you did". She never smoked again. There was noone to give her any or take her outside to smoke. She was fine. She just repeated for a few days, "I'm nervous, I'm nervous". This works for many alzheimers patients. Her doctor was the one who told us to tell her that she quit smoking, and it worked! I spend my time with her now in different ways. I paint her fingernails or look at photo albums. If she doesn't even know you, it will be easy to get her to believe that she quit smoking. good luck.

New-ish/new again

You seem to have been working on preparing yourself for this "adventure". Stay close to the sight. Withdrawal is not fun, but as you already said, accept the way you feel and know that it is okay as long as you don't light that next cig. This is the absolute best decision you can make for yourself and your daughter. I will be sending up positive thoughts for you on Friday and Saturday! Siren, congratulations on 3days with no cigarettes! Everything that you wrote in your letter is true! Remember or re read your letter whenever those nasty cravings try and take over your brain. Weaning off of Gum/Lozenge

The directions are in the package. How much you smoked determines the strength..2mg or 4mg. Quitting Smoking can be a blast!!!

Great for you chixstix, You are having a good day not smoking. Can you believe that you haven't smoked one cig in eight days??? Isn't it amazing. Be ready for the hard days and be thankful for the good days. We all have both for the first year. You are doing the best thing that you can do for your life and those around you..remember that on the hard days. finding this very tough!

Oh time to quit, I hope that you are feeling better. I love your name..it surely is time to quit! All the symptoms are signs that your body is healing itself. You are withdrawing from nicotine; a very addictive drug. Depression is part of the package. It will get better. You will feel better. Take it one day at a time. All the pangs and roller coaster emotions are worth it to be free from nicotine. You will have control over your life again. Nicotine also has dulled our emotions for all these years. Learning to deal with the intensity of emotions after quitting smoking is also required. Be extra good to yourself during this time. I know with children, woman sometimes ignore their own needs far too much. Do not do that now. Develop new habits. Take some nice walks in the evening. Maybe the kids would like to go with or ride their bikes along. It can be a great time to connect with them. Take a good book into a hot bath with some aromatherapy salts. Give yourself a manicure or pedicure; rub lotion all over yourself. Hang in timetoquit. You will feel better.
