Topic:Consequences of Stress

Definitely!  If I'm overtired, that's when I feel the stress.  Have had to learn to say "no" more often and take care of me first.  Sometimes when you are ill, it can't be helped as well, but you still have to put you first and get lots of rest.  I used to worry about missing important events, not being where I said I would be, (hate to let people down) that sort of thing, now, I just say, sorry I can't make it afterall.  I'd be lying if I said I don't have niggling thoughts in the back of my mind, but am learning to let them go.  I am trying to enjoy "a day at a time" as that is all we have really.  I need to remind myself that yesterday is gone, tomorrow isn't here yet.  These are things I know about and lately, needing to practice it.

Expressing Yourself Creatively

When panic started for me I used to read book titles on the bookshelves - anything at all.  I used to have a whole wall of books, floor to ceiling.  It got me to concentrate on something else.  Music might be a good distraction, haven't tried that really, except singing in the car when I felt panic starting.  When I use the clay, it's great to slap it around on the table getting it ready.  That relieves stress for sure.  But I cannot sketch or do fine detail when my mind is racing, better to take a break and get back to it.  So, as Davit says, mindless type of work seems to do it better.

Hard to say what´s normal and what´s not now

Hi Phoenix:  Sounds very stressful and hurtful, what you just went through.  Sorry you have to go through it.  I wonder, has your husband ever been away for long periods from home before?  Maybe his mother feels very lonesome and worried. (I know you were too).  How often did he used to call her or visit before he left for basic training?
NOT that that is an excuse for her behaviour.  I agree it would be wise for your husband to handle this situation and talk to her as he said he would.  Don't get caught in the middle, she is his mother.  Sounds positive though, that he is on your side and wants to talk to her about these issues.  I think if you get involved (even though you are very hurt by her remarks and attitude towards you) she might resent you even more.  Let's hope he sets boundaries with her concerning his marriage with you, how she needs to be respectful and butt out of your and his affairs.
Your move to Arizona sounds wonderful and yes, you'll have privacy, yippee.  I visited AZ and just fell in love with it.

p.s. vent as much as you want.  We support you - we take turns venting - lol

Surprising Treatments for Depression

Samantha:  Not surprised to hear that the personal workshops help with depression.   Personal growth workshops give you more self-confidence when you achieve new goals, interests, meeting new people, etc.   Talk therapy too, imagine, someone is actually listening to you!  Makes you feel as though you matter after all.

Hi, I'm Eric and I'm new

Hello Eric:  Welcome Eric. Glad you found this site.  What about balance?  You work hard, are you able to relax at home?  Do you take time out just for you - or are your weekends all busy-ness and filled up with to-do things?  Do you have a hobby in which you can immerse yourself and forget about the day's travails?  How's your diet, your sleep?  Where do you think you can improve for a healthier lifestyle?  Do you drink too much coffee, eat well, get enough exercise - even just a walk around the block - you know, that sort of thing.
Being on meds. usually SSRI's,  is sometimes recommended by your doctor and o.k. in my opinion.  The meds. will help calm you enough so that you can do the CBT program here - cognitive behavioural program, which is considered very good for anxiety/stress related disorders - and learn relaxation techcniques, understand your patterns of negative thinking, your behaviour when it happens, the panic feeling, etc.  I hope you start the program and talk with your doctor about it.  You don't have to be on meds. but it is a choice you can make with your doctor's adivce.  After a few months, you can taper off, again with your doctor's knowledge and guidance.  Good luck Eric.  We are here listening, this is a safe place to vent, be angry, sad, whatever.  We care.

Expressing Yourself Creatively

Anerol:  Is that one of your paintings?  If so, it is very good.  I like still lifes very much. You are so talented.  Always wanted to play the piano but we used to move almost every year (military life) and there was no way we could lug around a piano.  Nowadays of course, they have the smaller ones, electronic and all.

You can get better

Hi CarnationsL:  I was on Paxil before.  While I was on this med. I did a CBT program and a support group.  I stayed on Paxil for more than a year afterwards, practicing what I learned and felt really well and ready to wean off.  I started by halving the dose for approx. a month or two, then taking the half every other day for about a month, then nothing.  When decreasing the dosage I did have a side effect which felt like a sort of buzz in my head.  Hard to describe, but nothing that hurt at all, just a buzz.  This passed after a couple of wks. or so.  No problem for me other than that.  I haven't had any panic attacks since.

When I was sick last yr. I had a lot of pain and the anxiety started up again so wanted to join this site to "nip it in the bud", so to speak.  I was having symptoms, such as throat tightening, chest pains, difficulty catching my breath, sleeplessness, fear of walking too far and not being able to get home again (I feared the pain would return and weaken me).

I strongly recommend that if you decide to stop meds. to do so with your doctor's knowledge and help.  Hope this helps...
