Well, I've blown it again

ICL,
Beating yourself up isn't going to get you anywhere.  Commit to the quit and then make your plan.  Talk to your doctor and make use of NRT's if need be.
Like a I said before, I used BOTH the patch and Zyban.  I never would have entertained cold turkey.  I know myself and I didn't hesitate to take ALL  the help I could get.  And, so far, its paid off wonderfully well.
You CAN do this, you just have to believe.

Well, I've blown it again

I hear you with that one, BJ.  We have no small children in the house, but we do have our first grandchild on the way.  I don't want any second hand smoke for the baby OR for my beagles.  They are all precious to me.

Taking advice and making a plan

Paula,
I am definitely glad to see you making a plan.  Definitely talk to your doctor about NRT's.  They can really help.  And you know what...I have struggled just the way you are right now.  I have quit 7 or 8 times in the past 3 years alone.  I can't tell you the number of times I've come here and had to say, "I blew it.  I smoked."
This time, I had a good plan.  And the one thing I've learned is to go easy on myself.  I still have days now and again where my mood isn't the best.  But I allow for that now, and lay low if need be.
Its all about protecting your quit...whatever it takes.

All the best to you,

Jan

Back to Basics!

This is the longest I have been smoke free in 25  YEARS!  I'm off the patch now(nearly 2 weeks) and am taking 1/2 the dose of Zyban.  There have been a few peaks and valleys along the way, but I have to say everything has been running pretty smoothly.
...until this morning.  I got up at 6am, usual routine, came downstairs to a VERY untidy kitchen.  My son made himself a very generous midnight snack after baseball, and left the evidence to prove it.   Hubby's knees have been really, really bad the past few days(he's having double knee replacemant starting in July), and me, well, hot flashes and mood swings are camping out at my door right now.  AGGGHHHH!
I know I have some spare time today, so guess what, its back to basics a day or two.  Luckily Victoria Day Weekend is two days away.  We plan to garden, etc.  I'm pulling out my "lay low" bag of tricks until this subsides.
And through it all, as much as that damn nicodemon thingy is knocking at my door, it feels wonderful to know this is the longest I've gone without a cigarette in a very long time.
And that...is the best news I could ever ask for.

Cheers,

Jan

Would like to hear from people who smoked for many years

Except for my quit attempts I smoked pretty steadily for about 27 years.  All in all, I feel better.  I don't cough anymore.  Which I especially notice at night.  I just got over a sore throat a few weeks ago and I didn't get as sick as I would usually get.
Quitting smoking is such a sense of accomplishment, because it isn't an easy thing to do.  And being from Canada, you know the price of cigarettes up here.  Nearly ten dollars a pack for some brands!!!!!  I thought I was getting a bargain at $8.25 a pack.
But money isn't the most important thing here, your health is.  And you're doing a great thing!  Congratulations on 17 days smoke free.  That's awesome.

Cheers,  Jan
