Truthful antismoking ads...shocking?

I was becoming an expert at jumping up and turning the dial before the family truly understood what was being said on the ads...i would talk soooo loudly through them that finally my daughter said "we get what you're doing - the ad makes you uncomfortable...why is that?" and she knew why it was...because i WAS a smoker and it shamed me. did it make me stop? no. did it scare me enough to stop? no. what made me stop? ME. the ads, the tax, the cost...the lack of places in new york city to smoke in...nothing did it. i woke up one morning and said 'enough'. i look for the ads now...so i can say to myself and my family..."that is not me anymore...i am over it". *there is a new ad coming out today/tomorrow which is supposedly very difficult to watch....but not for us, non-smokers...right? NOT ONE PUFF EVER. GO US! Pregnant Smoker - need support

I know how difficult this is for you....you are not just quitting for yourself now...you are quitting for the wonderful life inside of you...my mother smoked when she was pregnant with me - 50 years ago - sure, i survived it - but i went on to becoming a smoker at age 12 and here i am, counting my quit days all these years later...my mother didn't know the dangers then (and yes, i was smaller than i should have been at birth..) now that we know so much - how can we not give ourselves and our unborn children a little more than we had ourselves? everytime you reach for a cigarette...go for a walk, take a nap..call a friend...read a book - write a poem...your child will thank you...your body will thank you. Good Luck..you can do it! Coughing?

thank you for this important message...i am on day #75 and never thought i would get here...i am finally able to make a doctor's and dental appointment without the guilt "so...you're still smoking?" now i can say "no, i am a non-smoker.." i feel better than i did when i was a smoker and for the first time in a while...have no funny aches or pains that i was just used to having...i wonder how much of it came from smoking.....every night when i run to my bus i am thankful for the 75 days and the support of this group...it's time to take stock in ourselves physically, mentally, spiritually.... Would like to hear from people who smoked for many years

except for a few brief years...i smoked for 35 years...always Marlboro...i have stopped cold turkey and am on day #98..i feel better than i ever did before (yes, i still miss it) my hair looks better - skin looks smoother - i can run to the bus without being winded...food taste better and worse, smells are stronger and i have already added 11 days to my life. each day is still a test but i am passing it - this will be the first summer in a long time that i am not trying to light a cigarette on a windy beach... as Billy Collins said in "The Best Cigarette"...."...How bittersweet these punctuations of flame and gesture..."  To stop smoking has been the most difficult and the most rewarding decision i have made as i approach my 50th year on this earth.

My Quit Date: 2/7/2008
Smoke-Free Days: 98
Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,940

ha ha.....Billy Collins is still a non-smoker (i know this because he was my professor in college and we keep in touch..his poem  The Best Cigarette is actually about his LAST cigarette - he is a huge non-smoker now and very proud of me) I only wrote 2 poems to my Marlboro's....saying goodbye, etc.etc...but i am over that now and no more Odes to Bad Stuff...nice to know that we are all such big supporters of one another...nothing slips by.....tough crowd.  ;)

Would like to hear from people who smoked for many years

Good for you!   And you don't mess around with the bold type either!  I spent the first few days of my quit crying and wondering how i was going to get through.....everything....without a cigarette....how can i make a phone-call, answer mail, make a decision, walk to the bus after work...how do i blink without a cigarette?  So i agree about the 'freeing' part...you no longer have to figure out how to smoke and/or cover up the smoke and/or desire to smoke...i remember standing out in the blinding snow to have a cigarette - 'would walk a mile for a camel'.   I am proud of you and your family is proud of you...being in awe is a good thing....Congratulations!

Chantix and FAA

hi there....just read in the New York Post...."hundreds of patients taking Pfizer's anit-smoking drug Chantrix have reported serious accidents, vision problems and heart trouble...researchers at the non profit Institute for Safe Medication Practices at  Wake Forest Univ. said they found hundreds of reported problems since the drug's 2006 approval..."    not sure how this will change anyone's 'quit practices' but i am sure there is much more info about Chantrix on line, if you are concerned...Pfizer spokesperson believes that nicotine withdrawal - along with Chantrix - will cause certain symptoms that are hard to pin to either chantrix or smoking...it is a mixture of both.    i would think each of us needs to do a little more research to find the 'quitting tool' that works best and has the least negative side effects....i have done this cold turkey so i am just too busy eating and whining and forgetting things to keep up to date on anything else.   NOPE is all i know.....

Cigarettes Not Smoked: 3,150
