Hey JDK,
Welcome to the land of non-smokers. It's a brand new world out here, you'll be noticing some changes. For example, this is the first spring in 30 years that I have actually smelled. Wow!
Sometimes, especially during that first week or two, it will be all that you can do to not smoke just for the next five minutes. That's ok. Just don't smoke for the next five minutes. If you have internet access at work, why don't you pop in here for a quick read during your breaks? Beats the alternative.
Or, make a promise to yourself. Tell yourself that you'll only smoke after you've posted on the board that you're having a killer crave and you've heard back from one of us. While you wait, go back to all of the reasons you quit smoking, and remember them, fully, one by one.
Finally, and I think this is really important, REWARD YOURSELF for each hurdle you cross. Quitting is really, really hard for most people, and you deserve your full admiration and congratulations each time you turn a crave into a no. And you'll find out that each time you say no, it becomes easier and easier to say.
Oh, yeah. Make sure you know where the exclamation mark is on your keyboard. You'll be using it a lot around here.
Keep at it, JDK, we're all here rooting for you!

Hi guys!
Rode the bike to work this morning, helmet but no face shield because I busted it the other day. It was, err, brisk.
Had a horrible, nasty crave last night. I had to remember that last cigarette I ever had, the one that made me feel really nauseous, until the rest of my brain woke up to the fact that maybe having a smoke was a bad idea.

Supernova, I think you win the award for most novel way to begin a quit...
And remember, when healed, your legs will be as good at walking away from cigarettes as toward them.

Hi Whynot,
I had to put the wood stove onto full burn again. Usually this time of year I'm tailing off. As I write this, snow is falling. Thank goodness it doesn't appear to be sticking!
Isn't it great to enjoy things without that #$%@ cigarette?

JDK said: "Btw, any views on the cut down one at a time = eternal withdrawal? i.e. is there any validity in it?"
Kev, let me put it to you this way. I tried that method for about 6 months before I finally up and quit. I would get down to one a day, then one every other day, then one every 4-5 days...and then it would start coming back at me, and I'd be puffing away at 5-6 a day again, then I would battle it down to one a day...you get the idea.
It was 6 months of utter hell. On me, on my family, on the people I work with.
See, cocky fool that I am, I thought I could control my addiction. That I could become one of those people you here about that have one every couple of weeks, or when they go out to a bar...(those people don't exist, btw. They are an urban myth. It's always a friend of a friend who is able to do that, and the few people I've met directly who do claim that capacity...are lying).
What in fact happened, was that I extended that period of physical withdrawal -- what folks around here call Hell Week -- into 6 months. Six months of constant physical withdrawal. I had Hell Half Year. All because I was afraid of letting go of that last cigarette, that friend who would never let me down, that constant companion, that good buddy who was killing me by inches and making me suffer every inch of the way.
When I finally let go -- and let go completely -- for one week, I began to see how foolish my thinking was, how full of junkie lying trash I was.
So, to make a short story long, my advice to you would be: Put the pack down. Walk away. And Don't Look Back.
