I'm right there with you, Kiwi. Cold Turkey was the best way for me, too.
Hey! Barkeep! Pour me another Cold Turkey, willya? On second thought...make that a double, and bring another one for my friend here...

Hi chops,
First of all, congratulations on your decision to quit! One of these days soon, you will realize its one of the smartest things you ever did.
My thing has been chewing gum. It really replaces the whole oral fixation thing for me, and whenever I feel like lighting up, I pop a piece of gum in instead.
The other really, really important thing I did: I parked my sorry, nicotine-addicted tush in front of the computer, came to this site and read and read and read and read. I found other people's stories inspirational, and discovered that a lot of people had gone through what I was going through right then, and as horrible as it was, they came through it and were really glad they did. If they could do it, I could. And so can you!
A lot of times, by the time I finished reading, a crave (or five) had come and gone.
I'm sure the others here will have a lot of good suggestions.
We're all rooting for you!

I was just reading up on some other ideas to distract yourself when you are quitting, and I noticed a lot of people suggested doing housework to keep yourself busy.
Amazing, doing housework never occurred to me. Not once.

Hey Serenity,
That was a really motivating post. Thanks for giving us all a peek at the future.

Went fishing with my daughter yesterday. Opening day, it's a tradition with us. We go to the same place every year, don't catch a doggone thing, and have the best time ever.
Down the river from us, there was another group of fishermen. All of them were smoking. It was weird, in the early morning light, you could see the cloud of smoke around them, and following them around as they moved about. And it stank, boy did it stink. Yuck.
That's the first time I've really come up close and personal with active smoking that it really impressed me as being so incredibly disgusting. I guess that's progress.

Glad everyone is still doing well, although from the sounds of things, we had all better sit on different sides of the bus to prevent tip-over...
Speaking of diets, my chiropractor put me on a detox diet. He said, now that I wasn't polluting myself every day, it was time to clean house of all the accumulated toxins.
I'm on day 3, pounds lost 3. For the past two days, I've had that same head-in-fog feeling that I had when I first quit smoking. I have given up my gum entirely. One of the things my chiropractor and I talked about was how low blood sugar was definitely a trigger for me, and he said if I started to get bad cravings again, I should blow the diet rather than blow the quit.
So far, it's been the opposite. It actually seems to be getting easier. And I discovered, that having become handy at saying no to the demon nic, saying no to something besides a vegetable or rice is easy as falling off a log. There's just no comparison between wanting a brownie and having a full blown Call-Tutti-Help-Me-MomMom crave.
On the downside, I've been getting up in the mornings feeling twice my age, which is closer to triple digits than I would like. He said this might happen the first week or so, while I started to clean house.

Hiya, Changing!
One of the things that has kept me going has been when I come across some of the posts from someone who has 586 or 749 or 1028 quit days. And they're like "yeah, I used to smoke, and once in a blue moon I get an urge, and I look at it and say, 'yeah, that's an urge,' I remember when I thought I wanted to smoke but that's just so silly now."
The impression I get from them is that it's just not a big thing to them, and they don't really get all worked up about it. Seems to be after a year or so, things get that way, and I figure with a little help from my friends, I can do darn near anything for a year.
Even if it doesn't get better, I'd still rather be fighting the demon and alive than, well, the alternative.

Just checking in, glad to know everyone is still sound, non-smoking, and at least partially sane!
I'm going to be on the road on business this weekend, with triggers abounding! I'm sharpening my sword to run through the nicodemon if I find him.
I think I'll have internet access tomorrow night, so I'll probably check in with my non-smoking buddies then. I promise my Febularian Friends that I won't have one, you guys do the same. Hugs to all.

Holy cow, aren't any of us Februarians sleeping? Criminy, I thought it was just me. BTW, one thing I found that helps is a ton of melatonin. Since the nic used to mess with our serotonin systems, we probably don't know when the heck we're supposed to be making it anymore.
See you all bright and early tomorrow, I guess.

For me right now, it's not so much a crave as it is an annoying itch in the middle of my back that I can't reach...aggravating and annoying, but not, at the moment, life threatening.
