Dreamer,
Hang in there. Talk a walk along the Seine, or take a boat tour and breath the fresh air, or go to one of your great museums. You are in such a beautiful city with so many things to do to distract you. Don't be scared to make the business plan, may be use a pencil, or a straw, carotte or whatever, and pretend it's a cigarette while working on the plan. May be this helps.
Good luck hang in there.
Gaby

Hi All,
I am from Europe, and one of my friend's dad was a cigarette distributor. And all of them smoked, my friend's dad, my friend, her sister, grandparents. It was like they were promoting cigarettes. And of course, there where always free cigarettes at their house. Creepy, no?

Gosh, since I quit I have been having these horrible nightmares every night. Anyone else experienced this? Also, even though it is unseasonably warm where I live for the time of year, I feel chilly most of the time. Normal as well?
Other than that, I feel pretty good. Yesterday I went ice-skating with my son's entire third grade, and one: it felt great not to smell like an ashtray and be self-conscious about it, and two: I had a lot more energy. Though I have to admit: being surrounded by some 150 third graders for about 3 hours really put my willpower to the test! But I made it.
Another weird effect I have been experiencing: I feel super clean! (Not that I wasn't clean before) But I guess you all know what I mean.
Oh, also, does anyone know why one shouldn't drink anything 15 minutes prior to using the nicorette gum? Just curious.
Thanks all, have a nice weekend,
Gab

Hi Obrmom,
Just keep reminding yourself that you want to be around for your kids for decades to come. It scares the living day light out of me to think I won't be able to be around for my kids because I caused havoc on my health.
And you know what? Kids really know what's going on. I have an 8 and 5 year old, who have been on my case for quite some time now. We have these horrific public announcements here in the North East. They show the artery (sp?) of a 32 year old smoker, and the stuff it is clogged with. Gross! There is also one where they show a woman inhaling a cigarette, and then a frame with her lungs showing, and how everything just shrivels up when the smoke reaches her lungs. So, needless to say that it freaked me out, as well as my kids, my son even asked,"Mom do your lunges look like this?" That was the last straw!
As far as the migraines are concerned, I noticed that while I have some withdrawal related headaches, they aren't by far as bad as those headaches I would experience while smoking. So it very well may be that you're migraines are related to smoking. Just think about it: you're cutting off oxygen supply to your brain, and instead are feeding it carbon-monoxide plus all the other "good" stuff they put in cigarettes.
Good luck, together we can all beat this.

You know what I started doing when I see a smoker? Instead of looking at them and their cigarettes in hand with this sad puppy look wishing this was me (like I did in the past), now I picture how the smoke is causing havoc on their internal organs. Might be a somewhat bizarre coping mechanism, but it works. At least for me!
Stay strong!

Got in our apt. building elevator today, and as soon as I entered it I was greeted by this awful stentch: Cigarette Smoke. Someone had actually smoked in the elevator.
Not only was it gross, but I immidiately got a headache, it felt like someone had hit me over the head with a hammer. Is that possible? Or was this just a fiction of my imagination? :confuse:

Hi Mookie,
Congrats to you and your partner. Thirty days is a great achievement. When I get this urge to just sneak "one" I remind myself that the taste of this one will probably be the equivalent to licking an ashtray. :gasp: Or I quickly smell my hair, and enjoy the smell of coconut instead of smoke. :)

I live in NYC, and the State of New York has launched a Smoke Free program which has been in effect for some time now. Not only do they show very graffic ads on television such as the brain of a 38-year old smoker who did from a stroke, the heart valve of a 32-year old smoker, as well as the destruction of the lungs, they also provide a support hotline for smokers. And those who are eligible receive a free starter kit, as well as phone support.
I am really curious if other states provide the same service. I had reached the point where I wanted to quit, and those ads were the last little push I needed. And every time I feel like I want to cave in, I just need to recall these very graphic ads, and let me tell you those cravings disappear faster than lighting up a cigarette.
It would be great to hear if your state provides something similar, or not at all.

I always quit Cold Turkey the previous (and numerous) times, and it never worked for me. While debatting to use NRT I had friends (who quit CT) tell me that the desire to quit has to come from within, and that NRTs won't help.
Well, I see it differently: Why go thru all the pains of labor if I can have the epidural, and make it a lot easier on myself? Some might think now that I am comparing apples to oranges, but if I can have something to ease the pain, and help me overcome this addiction, why not?
That's my two cents. I don't know what it will be like in a few months from now when I will have to give up the gum, but for now it really has helped me thru some very rough spots.
