Thanks Melanie, and to Redrosie: Sounds like the exact same anti-smoking ad they show here in NY. We have pretty strict smoking laws in NYC as well. And I have to say, it makes quitting a lot easier. Also we have had steep increases in the tabacco tax, and now our major wants to add another .50 . Just makes it easier to stay quit, because if I was still smoking that would mean dishing out $8.25 for the brand of cigarettes I used to smoke. :gasp:

Hi Redrosie,
I don't mind at all. I truly believe that if your mom, your grandparents, and my dad could, they would tell us to hang in there, and that they are proud of us.
So let's stick to it. For us, for our families, and for them.

Wow, so I am eating my lowfat Blueberry Yoghurt mixed with 1/2 cup of strawberries and pineapple, each, and two tablespoons of Granola (Weight Watchers' points 4.5), really enjoying my meal, when all of a sudden it hits me WHY I am enjoying my light fare so much:
I can taste the blueberries, pineapple, and strawberries. Yes! Gosh, I had forgotten how delicious they actually are. Absolute and pure pleasure. No cigarette can measure up to this, no way. Can't wait to go to my fav restaurant on the weekend, and dig in. :) :)
I just had to share this piece of info which to others might sound benign, but you all understand what I mean.

Redrosie, I have two boys. The older one who is eight has been one my case to quit since last summer. Many kids his age are very aware of the dangers smoking poses, and they really despise it. I sooo hope it will stay this way, and the one thing to make sure of it is to not smoke myself.
Fish and Polly, thank you. Fish put it very well: Let's end the chain of smoking in our families.

Dear Vickie,
I am so sorry for your loss. And my heart goes out to her little babies. It's just gut wrenching to know that two more kids are now motherless because of these horrible sticks. It is a reminder that the danger of cigarettes is so very real, and that the diseases related to cigarettes don't discriminate when it comes to age.
Now, not only will I think of my dad when I get even the slightest urge to light up, I will also think of your dear friend and her two children.
Vicki, I'll be thinking of you. Please, let us know if the kids are in need of anything. It just is so freaking sad.

Hi Denisey,
Great to hear from you again. So proud of you and Julia. And you are right, you can't make someone give up cigarettes. I always think the decision to quit is a gradual process. And there is nothing worse than having someone nagging about it, makes people more stubborn. Know this from my brother who is a smoker, and my sister-in-law who is a non-smoker. She really naggs him, I mean badly, and she gets on everybody's nerves with her constant lecturing.
Anway, looking forward to read your posts,
Gaby

Hi Bonbons,
The first few days were allright, than I had a few days where I thought I was going insane. Now, I have reached the point where, during the day, I don't miss it that much. However, the evenings are still hard. But I tend to go to bed a lot earlier these days, and it seems to help. Just keep reminding myself how awful I felt when I smoked. I would get these crazy headaches, and wake up with horrible nicotine hangovers. My goal is to buy a very good pair of running shoes as soon as I hit the 20 day mark, start running in the park every morning, and join our local running club. It just feels incredible to be able to breath again, and I can only imagine how much better it is going to be the longer I stay quit.
Good luck to you as well. Am looking forward to read your posts.

Our litte guy (5 years old) told us something very disturbing about his lunch room teacher at the dinner table yesterday. Really disturbing. My first instinct was to run to the corner deli, and pick up a pack of smokes, but reminded myself that this wasn't going to solve the problem.
This morning I discussed the issue with his teacher as well as the principal, and necessary steps are being taken right now.
To think that I handled all of this without a cigarette to handle the stress is something so amazing I can barely believe it myself.

Cigars are made out of tabacco, and contain nicotine. So I don't see a major difference, just that cigars stink even more than cigarettes. :(
But you are right, society seems to believe that smoking cigars as not really smoking. NYC has an absolute smoking ban in all bars and restaurants. However, the ban doesn't apply to the private cigar clubs around the city.
