smoking families

My dad smoked, and so did my grandfather who lived with us;he smoked cigars. My mom, now get this, didn't start smoking until she was in her forties. My brother and I both started smoking when we were teenagers. My brother still smokes, and as far as I know, has never made an attempt to quit. Come to think of it, we were surrounded by smokers when we were kids: aunts, uncles, family friends, older cousins. Wow, that's sad! Any quit smoking buddies out there!

Hi Ashika, You will notice such an immense difference. I started running again as well, and even though I worked out before doing the usual stuff, the first time I ran again (which was this week) my lungs worked like a well oiled engine. No coughing, no tightness, no nothing. It was such a liberating experience! Just come here and come often. Good luck tomorrow! Friends smoking in front of me

Hi RissaRoo, I had the same problem, and I think that I ticked off some people along the way. I was suppossed to go out for dinner with a few friends last week. I know that some of them smoke, and that we'd probably be having alcohol with dinner. I canceled the dinner date with the person who had organized it, and explained my situation to her. I just wasn't ready for this. BTW: Haven't heard from the person who organized the dinner, oh well, her loss not mine. At least I am still a non-smoker. snow

Hello Fellow New Yorker, Congratulations! Wasn't it great to not have to make sure you had enough smokes to ride out the snow storm? What's Your Opinion?

I believe the doctor just has the patient's best interest at heart, (and probably is also worried about legal consequences should something go wrong). Further, it has been 2 years since the accident. One has to wonder whether he would be a lot better by now had he not smoked. I don't think This is not a question about discriminating smokers, it is about a doctor's concern for his or her patient's health. And if s/he has to go to such drastric measures to make this person realize how he himself is sabotaging his recovery, I would say more power to you, Doc. As far as surgeries for overweight people go: yes, some are denied surgery until they lose a certain amount of weight, because anesthesia would put additional stress on their already fragile health, and could eventually threaten on overweight person's life. And my answer wouldn't have been any different when I still smoked. I remembered getting mad at my mom for smoking right after she had a tooth extracted. Not the same I know, but still, why would anyone do this to herself? What would you say...

Hi Ang, Thanks to very graphic non-smoking ads on TV my kids know how harmful it is. I believe the earlier they learn about the dangers the better the chances are that they won't start. We do have an open dialogue about smoking, and how addictive it is, and they know how much better I feel now because I talk about it with them.
