Checking in and a word to the wise!

Hi Pen! I am still an avid supporter of Pub Games, it's great now the air inside is fresh (after an initial period where it became apparent that the smell of fresh and stale smoke had been masking other smells like stale beer - yuk!) The new season has just started, it's great on match nights to be able to relax while others are having to dash off outside. But I must never forget that the idea that one day I might have to be that person having to go outside was one of the biggest motivations for me to quit. Those still smoking have my sympathy. In support of the ashtray.....

The perceived wisdom is that when you quit you should get rid of all smoking related items, including ashtrays. However, I feel that ashtrays serve as mini waste bins and still have a role to play. I still have an ashtray on the windowsill in my bathroom, the room is tiny (the toilet is in a separate room) and there is no space for a bin. Now we have a smoking ban in all pubs and restaurants, most establishments have removed all the ashtrays, but it seems obvious to me that there is now nowhere to put all those little items of litter, the snack packets, empty sugar packets, the stray peanut that fell on the floor or table etc. The French have an item called a "poubelle de table" which is a mini table bin, usually with a lid, but that seems too much. Maybe the ashtray should be replaced with something similar to the ashtray labelled "litter bowl" ? What do the rest of you think? Fighting off my cravings

Candi, we used to call week two Heck week (week one being Hell week) where cravings can come out of nowhere to hit you. So hold tight, you will get through it, and gradually it gets easier. It is always sad (and a bit scary) when you see others lose a long term quit. But for the most part that is due to one of two reasons: 1) The person hits a very stressful time and thinks that smoking will "help" - by the time that they realise it was no help whatsoever, they are hooked in again. or 2) They believe that after a period of being quit that "just one" won't hurt - that re-awakens the nicotine addiction. Unless drastic action is taken there will be "just one more" again and again until fairly quickly the quit is lost. You must acknowledge the fact that you are a nicotine addict, that for you there can never be "just one" and make NOPE (Not One Puff Ever) your watchword. But I do promise if you stick with it, that there will come a day when if you do ever think about smoking, it will be with gratitude that you are free of the tyranny of being a smoker. What a beautiful Sunday!

You've got the idea, we used cigarettes as mini-rewards and excuses to have a little break between jobs. It is important to remember that you are still allowed to take breaks, go outside and to have little treats. Spending a little time at SSC is a good break, dream up some new mini-treats and breaks, ideally things you haven't tried before. Rusty here got me into Chai tea, that is very comforting. I also like Rooibos tea, either plain or with Vanilla My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/16/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1004 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 32,128 Amount Saved: 6,024.00 Life Gained: Days: 138 Hrs: 7 Mins: 30 Seconds: 5

Monday 17th September Stats Parade

When I was a new quitter here, we always had a Monday morning stats parade for everyone to proudly hold up their stats and march together. One person who always posted his stats and very often started the parade was Bubba (Lyndsey) Indeed, I believe he was the one who first started the idea of the Monday stats parade. I see that sadly Bubba was safely gathered in at Easter, proudly smoke-free to the last. I didn't always agree with all his views, but there is no doubt whatsoever that his wisdom and particular brand of "tough love" helped many (including me) to stay on the road of freedom. I noticed today when I logged in that the quote of the day was one of his sayings (which is weird because I had already planned to make this post and dedicate it to him) In case you missed it, here it is: "If someone told you to take a 1000 pounds elephant and swallow it whole, itd be an impossible task. Even if you could do it, how in the world would you ever get it to digest? But, if you were to cut the elephant into 1 inch pieces, you could accomplish the task over a controlled period of time." Today I dedicate my 1000+ days (33 months yesterday) to Bubba with thanks, I believe I have eaten most of my elephant and the few scraps that are left pose few problems now. I ask you all to march with me in this parade and proudly show off your stats :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/16/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 1005 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 32,160 Amount Saved: 6,030.00 Life Gained: Days: 138 Hrs: 9 Mins: 25 Seconds: 0
