In support of the ashtray.....

We have the one from Acapulco, from our honeymoon 14 years ago, it is Mexican blue bubble glass and I love it, I ran it in the dishwasher for the 4 months we have been quit, John just recently took it out after laughing at me. I was trying to get it clean. ;) I am going to find something that smells good to put in there and display it. :) Great thread!! I still have a few. Some are special (memories) and some are for my smoking friends. They do make good candle holders. You could throw loose change in them. You could keep a few and throw them when the craves come back :eg: We had a garage sale and sold some of them and then got rid of the rest. It just nice not to have them sitting around full of stinking butts or having to wash the filthy things. Tom, I think Ros is refering mostly to pubs as opposed to restaurants and I agree with her. There's no longer the chance to clean out all those little bits of receipts and the like from you handbag! I used an old coffee can for years. I found I had no attachment to it when I quit and chucked it away. The table bin seems a little over the top to me, a bit anal. Even when I smoked I wouldn't smoke indoors, even in resturaunts. When I sat in the smoking section because nonsmoking wasn't available, I would ask the waitress to take the ashtray. An ashtray doesn't do anything for my appetite and I would imagine a table bin would suffer the same fate at my table. Besides, that's what that little saucer under the tea cup is for. I still have some of mine, crystal ones, my daughter still smokes and most of both Hubby and my families still smoke. So they get used for that on occasion. But Aloha, they do make good candles holders as they're fireproof after all. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 194 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 4,850 Amount Saved: $2,046.70 Life Gained: Days: 23 Hrs: 17 Mins: 17 Seconds: 6

Back when smoking was the norm in restaurants and bars it used to piss me off when people put flameable items in the ashtray. I kinda like the French idea to get rid of those sugar packets and straw wrappers and odd bits of detritus that wind up cluttering the table. My only ashtray was a measuring cup with the handle broken off, I tossed it. Great idea Ros especialy if your running a pub beats picking it up of the floor.I use my ashtrays to put my loose change in at the end of the day amazing how fast it accumulates. The perceived wisdom is that when you quit you should get rid of all smoking related items, including ashtrays. However, I feel that ashtrays serve as mini waste bins and still have a role to play. I still have an ashtray on the windowsill in my bathroom, the room is tiny (the toilet is in a separate room) and there is no space for a bin. Now we have a smoking ban in all pubs and restaurants, most establishments have removed all the ashtrays, but it seems obvious to me that there is now nowhere to put all those little items of litter, the snack packets, empty sugar packets, the stray peanut that fell on the floor or table etc. The French have an item called a "poubelle de table" which is a mini table bin, usually with a lid, but that seems too much. Maybe the ashtray should be replaced with something similar to the ashtray labelled "litter bowl" ? What do the rest of you think?
