Hello High Tower and welcome!  I agree with hors controle about waiting 3 months.  I too thought I would reevaluate after only a month only to learn that addiction counselors recommend 3 months.  Yikes!  3 months, there is no way!  Or so thought.  I found there is a way and that was 4+ years ago.  I truly believe if I had drank after a few weeks, a month, or even 2 months of being alcohol free I would be drinking again now.

Congratulations on 9 days, that is a great start!  Good luck to you.

New here :)

Sabastian, was today day 4 for you?  EJM715, still no alcohol since Sunday?

I hope you are both doing well.

Sabastian,

Good to hear you've continued with your plan.  Am I right that you are going to have alcohol tomorrow but moderate?  You mentioned going on vacation. In my opinion I wouldn't look too far ahead with times you will be without alcohol or moderating.  Sometimes it's hard enough getting through one day and looking ahead can sometimes be a little overwhelming.

High Tower,

Having several reasons to not drink is a good thing.  Saving money, losing weight, and better eating habits are all good benefits of not drinking.  Alcohol can have an affect on blood sugar but I think everyone is different when it comes to alcohol triggering food cravings.  I know some people that as soon as they start drinking, they won't eat anything.  You've got to find what works for you because in the end it's your journey!

Do you find that you are able to find more positives the longer you went without alcohol?  I know it was easier for me.  If I were to create a list of positives it would be long for being alcohol free.  The list of positives for drinking would be empty.

I hope everyone has a good day and a good week!

1 week!  That is great EJM715.  Getting through the first week AND the weekend is no easy task.  Lol, those days should count double! Is your success this past week giving you confidence for the coming week?

You asked what I drank in social drinking situations.  I just stuck with whatever it was that I wanted at the time.  I workout and count calories. When I drank I factored in the staggering number of alcohol calories I would be consuming that night which left me with minimal “food” calories.  So when I went to a social gathering I would make it a point to treat myself. I love coffee so my treat was often some kind of high calorie coffee drink, one that I would never all myself to have otherwise.  If the gathering happened to be where food was provided or served, I would order something that I would never have otherwise. I guess it came down to me having something that didn’t make me feel like I was being deprived.  Quite the opposite, I was being treated. I found I had to do anything to get through the situation.

Congrats again!

The more time that passes being alcohol free can make things easier but that doesn't mean the urges go away.  The difference is the confidence that you gain with each day, each situation, that you triumph over that alcohol voice.  Using the confidence helps those urges not seem as bad.  For me those urges are still around 4+ years later but they are fleeting urges at this point.  I know I can't succumb so I don't entertain them for long.  The alcohol voice isn't as loud when it knows the audience isn't really paying attention.

Congrats hors controle on one month!  I've never been to an AA meeting but I would think the one month token could serve as a great reminder of your journey.  Good luck with this next month.  Stay strong!

A slip is not a fail !

I noticed the same thing when I was reading and reading the posts years ago.  This journey we are on is not about winning and losing, success or failure.  I haven't drank in years but if I drink tonight does that make me a failure?  In my opinion the only time we truly fail is when we give up the fight.

If we are in here we probably don't have a healthy relationship with alcohol and in some way can relate to everyone's story.  Those that have been alcohol free for a period of time understand the struggles that are voiced in the posts.  What a a better place to come and say that you didn't accomplish what you wanted than a place that everyone understands.

So to echo High Tower, if your journey has not gone as smooth as planned, come in here and tell us about it.  Support will be here for you.
