How are you doing? Sabastian is right, holidays are hard. How much longer is your vacation? Hopefully you have found something to occupy a little of your time other than alcohol. I used to think that I would enjoy my vacations more if I drank. Once I stopped drinking I couldn't remember a lot of what I did on the vacations other than drink. I have sense visited some of my vacation spots and without a doubt they are better without alcohol. Maybe you could treat yourself to a day without alcohol and do something special for yourself, something you would never do if you were drinking. Vacations are about the experience. Have a experience! :)
Sabastian,
The end of the week is near! How are things with you are your goal?
I'm glad to hear you are doing okay and continue to set goals. Life does get in the way of our plans sometimes and having a goal to fall back on is always good. How has your 3 day goal worked for you?
Hello and welcome Mel130! Congratulations on 4 days without alcohol. From what you wrote this is a major accomplishment. When I drank I was an everyday drinker so I'm not sure if my advice would help. Even if I knew I could cram a weeks worth of alcohol into 2 days it was hard for me to even go 1 day without alcohol. I do understand the part you said about meetings with friends revolving around alcohol. Actually, if you think about it, most of your day probably revolves around alcohol. Even on the days your're not drinking because you are probably thinking about drinking. I know most of my day was spent thinking about the alcohol I was going to have that night. If I had something to do that night that could not involve alcohol, I would plan out how I would get in my normal number of drinks. Which, unfortunately, was a lot.
You drink 2 days a week now. What are is your goal? Do you want to stop altogether or drink less on those 2 nights?
Isn't it a wonderful feeling? It's been over 4 years since I drank and I would like to think I could handle having a drink with my friends, but it's just not worth the risk. Alcohol had so much control over me before, it was a factor in everything I did and decisions I made. I refuse to let it do that again so I won't give it a chance. I'm glad you're feeling good. Keep up the nice work!
Thanks hors controle. The advice Ashley gave really did change my life. When I was finally able to go a week or two without drinking I thought I would go a few more weeks then reaccess where I was. Ashleys statement that addiction counselors suggest going 3 months then reaccessing was huge for me. Never would I have gone that long and if I had drank again after a few weeks or a month, I honestly believe I would be drinking now.
When I decided to wait the 3 months the pressure was lifted. No wondering when or if I was going to drink, I was GOING to do the 3 months. It was hard but it taught me a lot about myself and I began to learned to live again. When the 3 months was over I knew I could live without alcohol and haven't touched it again. I don't even allow myself a nonalcoholic beer because I'm afraid it might make me want more. If I had a drink today, I would probably go right back to my old ways of daily drinking. My alcohol free life is much better than my drinking life so it's just not worth the risk.
So, all of that was to say that this site is very helpful. You never know what statement that is write or read will change someone's life. I'm sure Ashley has given that advice a million times over her time here but that one time was the time that it affected me and I am grateful.
