Mini Breakthrough

Hey all,

Today I'm 7 days sober.  It has been a challenge but I think I have kicked it this time.  I found myself in a bar last night, drinking diet coke, and really just not wanting to be there at all (I cannot believe I have finally 'got there'... I'm sooooo done!!!).

I finally actually verbalized my desire to stop drinking to my boyfriend (the totally non-supportive douche) on Saturday of last week.  He agreed that we could benefit from saving the money and from nixing the calories.  He managed to not bring beer home Monday, and Tuesday.  Tuesday night he went out to have beer at a bar (I stayed home) and last night I worked late so he thought it would be nice to take me out for dinner.... he took me to the Firkin on Bloor West and actually had a deep belly laugh when I ordered a diet coke.....he is curious to see just how long my 'drinking thing' is going to last.  He is out drinking (and driving MY fn car!!!!!!!!! loser!)  he thinks its okay to have 3-5 beer cause he weighs 260 Lb. I disagree!  I'm chilling at home enjoying the seriously reduced 80 calorie Non Alcoholic Holland made beer (Grolsch) I bought at Sobeys :)  I ran 5Km today :) ... soon to be not so 'fluffy' and far less intoxicated... I'm really driven and excited about my future :)

I now have some brand new resolve and motivation.  I'm going to prove him wrong (just like I did when I quit smoking)

Moderation

For me, I have found that I am a situational out of control freak when I drink.  There are times that I can have only one and be fine, and other times when I wont stop until all the booze is gone.  I have not been able to figure out  what causes me to snap, so it's my opinion that I should simply abstain from alcohol entirely just to be safe.

I have found it easier to do this by thinking of it differently.

rather than saying that I'm not drinking alcohol, I figure I'm NOT adding extra calories to my diet.  My body image is more important to me than being intoxicated.  I can be fat and drunk, or I can be slim calm and sober.

When I'm drunk I'm more inclined to do unthinkable things to my body (indiscriminate sexual behaviour, over eating, lazy lounging, inconsistent grooming etc.)... In order to respect my body and obtain/maintain the sexy stealthy  body that I want.... something has to go... its the booze calories.. plus when I'm not wasted all the time I'm more inclined to get off my butt and walk/run/socialize.

I'm not 'giving up alcohol' I'm getting healthy and sexier....

How do you plan for success?

For me it depends on the issue and the degree of success I'm expecting.

In the case of the drinking I have done a few things,
-I told a lot of the people around me that I plan to stop drinking (some people I told I was quitting because I drink too much, but when my bar owner employer wanted to buy me a beer the other night I told him I'm off booze to lose weight) in an effort to make myself accountable
-I planned for success by getting rid of a lot of the drinking memorabilia in the house including the really expensive Globe bar set including tea cart, wine stoppers, liquor bottle topper/pourers, fancy wine/highball glasses etc.
-in addition to this I threw out/donated all of my comfy (fat) clothes, so if I want to ever be comfortable again I'm gonna have to stop drinking and shrink to fit in my skinny clothes
- I have started a moderate regular activity program, and joined a social group of runners in recovery so I'm surrounded by others who feel like I do and will support my efforts to both stop abusing substances, and to get healthier (once I'm at my goal, these friends can help me maintain as well).
-I talked to my new doctor and got some fantastic tips and encouragement from her... I think we will be a great team as far as getting me healthier... plus she will hold me accountable in a big way.

More about Alcoholism

I'm unsure of this part:
"Physicians who are familiar with alcoholism agree there is no such thing a making a normal drinker out of an alcoholic."

What is a 'normal drinker'?  Is that like saying casual heroine user? or occasional smoker?

Is there a such thing as 'normal use' of an addictive substance?  Doctors and dealers and alcoholics will tell anyone not to start because you get hooked without even knowing it.  This applies to drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, and for some people eating habits as well.

becoming addicted to alcohol is 'natural' it is a chemical reaction in the brain that causes it, not unlike  cigarettes and cocaine.

What would you say to me or anyone if it was said that.. 'I only spend 300 on cocaine each weekend... I'm not addicted' .. then what would you say if the same person said that they only drink 300 with their friends at the bar on friday nights but dont drink again till the following friday....

I would think both of these activities are equally dangerous.. its only a matter of time before the cocaine or booze creeps in on a thursday night, or a monday morning eye opener....

the idea of a 'normal drinker' is insane in my opinion.. we are all at risk of the same addictions, its just our circumstances and environment that determine whether we become 'problem drinkers and problem cocaine addicts'

Just my opinion...

More about Alcoholism

I have been sober a week now ... my bf is out drinking tonight, I've decided to stay home.  I have decided to quit drinking because I want to, not because anyone is nagging me...

I'm not sure if you got my underlying message in my last post... it's not about what AA thinks and says... it's about the slippery slope that humans are on when they put alcohol to their lips... Not just alcoholics, but all human beings..

becoming addicted to 'substances' is a gradual sneaky process.  I don't think there is a 'normal drinker'.  Perhaps a 'normal drinker' is just a person who is not yet addicted to alcohol?  Given the right (or wrong) situation or circumstance (an epic fail in ones personal life, loss of job, death of child/parent) and our lovely 'normal drinker' could be as hooked as any of us...

A normal person can become susceptible to addition in any situation where he or she might not want to deal with or recognize emotions, or any other type of significant life event.  That is why I question the theory of 'normal drinkers'

2 bottles of beer?  It sure sounds like you 'exercised self control' tonight... way to go... still sounds like a victory to me... you are here and posting, not sitting at a pub getting wasted...  what 2 beer really means is that you did not drink the other 10 to make it a twelve pack....

good for you :)

Too hot to work out?

When I'm going to workout outside I like to bring water with me (freeze the bottle of water the night before so there is cold water for the duration of your run).
I also like to go out with my hair wet  (my hair is more than 20 inches long so it keeps my neck and back cool/damp)

I'm lucky to live in Toronto where there are tons of parks and almost all of them have a water source, pond/river/lake etc, so I  can easily scoop some water up and get my hair or short wet to col off if it gets too hot.  wear bright colours rather than black to reduce the extra heat from the sun shining on you.

Choosing your exercise location wisely is important... in the really hot weather (and the really cold) finding shelter from the sun/wind is important.  I like the walking/running paths in high park because trees provide shade and protection from the wind in the winter months.
