Good Morning. I'm just on my way outdoors to plant tulip bulbs. I've been very busy the last week, and Dentyne Ice is my new best friend. I'm going cold turkey, 4th serious attempt at quitting. DETERMINED describes me, or mad granny. I want to enjoy my grandchildren, fly on planes, enjoy eating, just generally live life without a ball and chain dragging me down. I think I can remember being 14 years old and just living..feeling normal through the day without craving anything except maybe a cold coca-cola. Trying to acheive that level of zen once more. Hope to meet some friends as I go through the next levels of non-smoking.

Looking at the plant I have in the garden, tall, with pink flowers called "Nicotiana Tabascum", and wondering..can I eat this and feel better?

I tried to quit years ago, and I found that having people smoking at work, in restaurants, and yes, even while grocery shopping (the olden days!) really distracted me from my quit. I'm so thankful that nowadays you have to go out of your way as you go about your business to be faced with second hand smoke.
I am trying to not feel sorry for myself, or hard done by (that nasty little monster just keeps on trying). I visualize every craving as Ole Nic's death cries..getting fewer and weaker as time goes by.
I run on the spot when it's really bad, envisioning stomping on that nasty little creature.
I sing a little song.."Got along without you before I met you, gonna get along without you now".

People around me are saying "The nicotine is out of your body by now..what are you talking about?" or "Your're making it worse by talking about it." if I mention I'm having a crave.
It's like somehow I'm a lesser human being because I still have these very compulsive feelings.
Thanks for this site, because I realize there are a lot of people who deal with the same responses. I just wish I knew something to say back to them that didn't sound like "f... you!", if you know what I mean. (Non smokers can be supercilious).

Thanks for the input on my "rant". I feel a little sheepish about it now, more like a petulant kid than a sensible grandmother. I do appreciate the judgement-free zone that this forum provides, however. Thanks again.

Me, meself, I'm workin on havin' the bottle to carry this through. I can always go have a walk down Lime Street if I'm feeling low, like I'm all fur coat 'n no knickers.
Chuffed to little mint balls here (actually..I'm eatin them)! Tarra..cheers..
Must go wash me barnet and put on some slap..
(Hope you're having a laff at my feeble slang attempt)
It's almost another language innit?

"the urges to smoke seem more like annoyances; I recognize them but they`re just remnants of a stupid and pointless bad habit."
(quote from about time)
What a wonderful way to describe what happens the longer you hang in there.
It's amazing when you think of all the hurdles we face just being human..lost loves, lost children, lost parents, yet we still manage to get through our lives (well, most of us), knowing from experience that things DO get better with time. One difference though. I am determined not to grieve not smoking. I CELEBRATE not smoking. In my minds eye, I am dancing like Snoopy to Lionel's piano in Charlie Brown's Christmas.
Frree at last!

My first reaction was eeeeeew!! "58 year old man, affair with 23 year old girl" Maybe it's because my husband and I are both 55. I remember being 23, tho, and I wouldn't have touched a 58 year old man with a barge-pole!
I know it sounds trite, but you are so much better than the two of them.
Take your time to gather all the tools you can for your quit. Get to the Doctor..there's lots of nicotine replacement stuff, or Chantix if you're in the states, if you need it. Borrow or buy Allen Carr's book "The Easy Way to Quit Smoking". It's better to start reading it while you're still smoking.
I went cold turkey, but every quit is different.
Read as much as you can here..old posts, new posts, its all good.
Love yourself.

And you know what? It wasn't bad at all. My soon to be in-laws (my daughter-their son) are smokers and I've dodged the invites over the last 3 months. Finally accepted an invitation for last night. There were six people smoking inside (about 14 people total were there).
I noticed the smoke, but I didn't want it. It didn't smell yucky, it didn't smell good either.
Weird.
I noticed my throat is sore this a.m. though. (Second hand smoke DOES have its drawbacks after all..though you couldn't have told me that three months ago. )
Not suggesting that any new quitters expose themselves if they don't have to, (to second hand smoke that is) LOL.
I just wanted to relate that I'm releived that it was much less of a stressor than I thought it would be.
N.O.P.E.
