Hi quitordie,
Smoking increases your metabolism, so they usually advise that you cut back on caffiene when you quit. Your body won't use it up as fast so you're more likely to get edgy. I would imagine the same would hold tru for alcohol. The same amount of alcohol you used to drink is likely to affect you more strongly now.
I also found that a drink helped take the edge of the craves. I didn't drink often before and rarely drink nowm but during the first months of my quit I had a glass or two every night. (I never did associate drinking with smoking).
So, I definately think you need to set your self limits so you don't overdo. Educate yourself about the affects of alcohol (i bet that sister site is as good as this one!). As golferman says "knowledge is power!"
Congratulations on your quit(s)!!

Hi I quit,
I just answered you question in The Neeks thread. Maybe that will help.
You hang in there, okay? You're right at that danger point where you get tired of fighting, apathy sets in and the junky thoughts just love whispering in your ear!. I lost my first quit in january last year at this point.
When (not if) you get through this hump, it should let up for a while. At least it did for me. Just go back to the "one step at a time" philosphy for a little bit.
And DO NOT forget to reward yourself. Start planning now for a fantastic 3 week reward! :)
We CAN do this!

:) I especially like the last comment...THE DECISION GETS MADE ONCE. ALL YOU HAVE TO DO NOW IS WHATEVER IT TAKES TO FOLLOW THROUGH ON THAT DECISION.
thank you for sharing with all of us!

abby,
I think you are ready to quit. It sounds like what you're scared of the most is failing at it. But think of all the things in your life you never would have done had you been scared to try. Would you be married? have kids? etc, etc?
Get your coping mechnisms in place. If you're using NRT's, have them on hand. If you'll use Zyban, start taking it. Set your quit date and do it. And make sure you get in here and read, read, post, and read and post some more!! We'll help every step of the way if you let us.
We CAN do this!!

paula, i so understand the desperation in your voice. i was there...desperate to quit. hating that i smoked, hating it while i smoked. and unable to keep myself from picking up the very next one.
I finally did it. it wasn't the illnesses (mine and others), the deaths (my parents) the second-hand smoke i forced on others (especially my children! :gasp: ). what finally got me over the hump and made it possible for me to quit, was my immense anger at the cigarettes that were controlling me! get MAD at your loss of control over the addiction. I had to put my head down, blinders on and just sart trudging through. No matter what, I was not going to smoke that next one.
Not everyone's path is the same Paula. Find what works for you...and stay on the path. You can do this...you have before.
Never quit quitting!
