Bad Dreams

I remember not long ago having had a night of bad dreams and feeling so frightened the next morning.  All of you were a wonderful support that day.  It makes me happy to think about how much progress I've made since that particular bad day.
Deborah, it's nice to read about how you enjoyed looking at the old photos before bedtime.  I've struggled with gift ideas for family members who seemingly have everything - I think I am going to make some mini bedtime photobooks for them!
I hope that you will have a peaceful week - and you too, Hugs!

Relaxation

I feel more relaxed just reading all of these wonderful suggestions.

These are things that I've probably already shared but:

-- I really like the Progressive Muscle Relaxation exercises.
-- There is something that my daughter learned at summer camp, a kind of visualization/relaxation exercise, that I really    love.  She guides me through thinking about different colors and relaxing settings associated with them (Think of blue - think of the ocean, stuff like that)
-- Tea seems to solve so many problems
-- I like to listen to relaxing music and to focus only on my breathing

I am seriously considering a yoga class in 2012!

Your Top 3- Acts of Kindness

My son had been telling everyone at school about our upcoming vacation (which we had to nix because the airline we chose decided to cancel all flights to our destination).  I told my son that we would try to make it up to him somehow.  It will be difficult because my husband was just laid off from his job on Friday and funds are going to be limited.  My son said that he wanted a hamster more than anything. Over the weekend, another parent told me that his children are no longer paying attention to their pet hamster and they would like to give him to our son, with a cage and a hamster wheel!  My son will be over-the-moon excited when he learns this news!  This really has made our holiday so much brighter!

It only takes a little bit of light to get rid of the darkness. This is what I've learned.

Planning for the Return of Anxiety II

Thank you for this note.  As you might know, I am in the middle of a really great period in my life - with little to no anxiety on most days.  Now is a really good time to go to my diary and to make note of what is working best for me.
I also would like to move on to the auxillary sessions.  I read through the Relaxation session and that is really helpful.  All of the elements of this program have changed my life in a very positive way.

Your Help?

A few things that stick out as being most helpful:
-- My therapist, who encouraged me to keep in mind that a panic attack would not kill me or cause me to faint

-- My daughter, who thought it was fun to guide me through PMR (in the beginning - she doesn't love doing it anymore but thankfully I've found a podcast to guide me).

-- "Challenging Anxious Thoughts"

-- The knowledge that the physical symptoms I was experiencing (dizziness, racing heart) could be attributed to anxiety

-- Last, and certainly not least, all of you!  I have learned so much from each of you!  Here are a few notes that I kept on my computer to review during my more anxious times:

"Remember; if you are alive enough to feel anxious, rejoice in the fact that you are very much alive and the anxiety proves it."

"When you’re feeling anxious or panicky, ask yourself:

•What am I thinking right now?

•What was I doing just before I got anxious?

•What was I thinking? "
And there was once a suggestion to run cold water on your wrists when feeling anxious that worked for me!

There have been other amazing pieces of advice and support, but I read them when I didn't have the ability to copy them onto my computer, so they didn't make it onto my sticky note collection.

Thank you all!

Your Help?

Davit, I have to tell you that when you wrote down

Me.

I thought - well you know, I do owe a great deal of thanks to Davit!

But yes, I should take some credit for doing the work I've done to get me to this much improved place.

Your Top 3- Acts of Kindness

Here a few kind of fun ones that come to mind.  I used to buy coffee from a fellow who had a drive-through espresso stand.  He was terrific and always knew exactly what my order was going to be.  One day, I could see in the rear view mirror that the CEO of our company was in line behind me.  I asked the fellow if he knew what the guy behind me in line typically ordered and he said he did.  So, I paid for my coffee and the coffee of my company's CEO, just to brighten his morning a bit.  Well, that day we had an all-company meeting and I won an award!  I had to go up to accept my award from the CEO.  He hadn't known it was me who bought his coffee but I shared the story because it was a nice coincidence!
Last week an artist-friend of mine went to a concert with me.  We saw a 23 piece band - they were incredible.  They announced during the show that they didn't have a big tour budget and they had relied on being able to stay with fans and relatives throughout the tour - but they knew no one in our city and did anyone want to host them.  So, my friend offered her home for the band to stay in.  The next morning I brought them bagels and muffins from our local bakery.  It felt wonderful to do that and to be able to support the arts that way.
Okay, that's only two but they had such lengthy stories, I should leave my post at this.  Fun idea, Davit!

Decided to visit

Leanna, I also thank you for coming back to visit and I congratulate you on your successes!!  What an inspirational post!  I have added it to the folder I turn to when I need inspiration.  In fact, after a few wonderful weeks, I had a bit of a setback last night that has moved into this morning but seeing your post has helped me to accept my anxious night and early morning for what it was - a mere blip on my anxiety radar.  I won't let it hold me back.  Not sure when you will be back - but do know that you helped!

Scared about tomorrow

Hi Matilda!  I would also like to congratulate you.  I remember doing some exposure work a month or two ago and being motivated by the fact that I wanted to be able to post good news about my experience.  It feels great doesn't it - to be able to accomplish your goals and share it with a community who can celebrate your success with you.  Well done!
