Comical moments in My Day

Hi Davit and Ashley,

Initially, I was upset about the burning garbage, because I thought it must be unhealthy.  I shut the flue on the wood burning stove and problem solved   There's always some seemingly unpleasant situation that comes up or replaces another.  But, it's me who makes it unpleasant, the situation is neutral, it's what I make of it.  So, I choose to be happy regardless.  Also, the other day I got mad, because I work so hard to change myself for the better and I was just exhausted from it.  So, I got mad and got over it and now I just laugh in the face of adversity.  It's just life, there's always going to be something going on, I might as well find the humor in it now, not ten years from now.  My back still hurts, but I continue to keep going and do my exercises and take an over the counter medication.  I like how I've used it as an excuse to not do what I don't want to do, but I still do what I want to do anyway.  I really don't want to go to the Orthopedic Specialist, but if I'm still dealing with this chronic pain in a couple of weeks, I will go.  I'm doing everything I can.  Pain is temporary, like everything else in life, we find ways to manage it and remain positive despite it.  And, be happy for all we've got as Davit said.

Hi Shari!

So sorry to hear about the difficulties you have been having around the house. Doesn't sound like a very good start to a new year. And burning garbage?! That can't be legal or healthy for you or the environment.

HAHA dust elephants. It's amazing you can keep your sense of humour despite all the problems you've had lately.

My neighbour is putting in Geothermal. He builds drill rigs for a living so it will be pretty cheap for him. Our house is over insulated, 8 inches in the basement, 6 in the rest of the rooms and a foot in the ceiling all rapped in Tyvec. We heat it with two out of three heaters, all just a thousand watts each and a wood burning cook stove I built once upon a time for something to do. Still I can notice the difference in temp by the windows when it is really cold. The doors we put in this spring have levers to hold them shut when not in use such as at night so there is no draft. I really like that. I don't heat the basement yet it stays comfortable. Sunny is in Edmonton or she would probably have a window open for fresh air. Me, I don't care all that much, I just let the fire go out.
There is not the charm that there is in old houses, at least ones still in good shape but for me I've had to settle for economy and low maintenance. After all I'm a cripple. Vinyl siding may be ugly but the mice can't climb it or get in. Sort of out of place here in the land of ex hippies and draft dodgers but who cares. I'd rather spend the money some where else than heat. One thing I would like though is a heat exchanger. We have no neighbours so there would be no pollution coming in it.
A person can't have every thing, best to be happy with what I have.

Davit,

So far, I haven't determined if the dry air, is dry, since there's some experiment I have to do to calibrate the hydrometers.

I'm a little wired today, and tired, since we have a doc's visit tomorrow, and I'm barely getting over my sore back.  I should be better though.  The chiropractor cancelled monday, and I can't see him until thursday, I think.  I feel a little vulnerable, with my back, but I think I'm organized.  Also, I haven't been driving for 5 days, so I feel awkward.

It'll be harder on mom tomorrow, since her doc has a long wait usually, but it can't be too bad, since it's at 10:00...depending on how many people get squeezed in.  Bless her soul, she ate all the veal parm I threw in the oven, though

I wish I had dust bunnies.  Mine are more like dust elephants.

I live in a 1905 farmhouse, so it's very drafty.  The neighbor can't afford oil heat anymore, so he's burning garbage that permeates our house.  I have a Geo Thermal heating system.  There was a recent leak in the free on (I don't know how to spell it) and it needs a replacement coil.  Something smelled like it was burning and oil chips, from the previous heat source, (like crushed Oreo cookie crumbs) scattered out of the vents, smoke filled the house and set off the smoke detector.  At first I thought it was the wood burning stove and there was a crack in the chimney or too much soot in the chimney, but it was the furnace.  It took two days for someone to come out to temporarily fix it, until the ordered parts come in, hopefully this week. Fortunately, with the wood burning stove and 3 space heaters it's not too bad.  The coldest room in the house is 50 degrees F. The house gets dry in the winter sometimes, so I use a steam humidifier and keep it in whatever room I'm in.

If all else fails read the instructions right.

So how was your air quality?  Our house is too tight. Boiling water will set off the smoke detector as will lifting the lid on the wood stove. Bit of a nuisance that so I disconnected it. We have electric heat because with pets forced air just spreads the bunnies around. Besides here it is cheaper. Dust is one of the things that does bother me. Humidity not so much. I think our house is probably too dry.

Today, as I was trying to improve the air quality, I found out something interesting.

I was reading about humidity, and bought gadgets called hydrometers to meaasure that, but a couple are in fahrenheit, and a couple in celsius.  For years I've been irritated by having to convert mentally, as I measure temperatures and humidities in the house.

As I was reading about the gadgets, there was a reference to an adjustable part of the gadget.  I found the black button on the back that converts it to celsius or Fahrenheit!

At least I got a good mental workout

Hi Davit,
I think someone placed a patent on the cat's dust-catching hair, and made it into a dust-mop.

Where would we be without those gadgets.  Now if we could just train  fluffy cats to dust by rolling and collecting dust, we'd only have to figure out how to get them to climb walls and ceilings - no more dusting!

Once upon a time in my poorer days I lived in a duplex that was falling apart. My American Short Hair cat fell through a rotten spot in the floor and I spent hours coaxing it back out. It was in it's glory among the bugs and spiders. When it came out it was so full of cob webs it looked like a persian. A happy cat though.

Some days I wish my priorities were as simple as a cats.

Davit.
