When I can hear my heart beat or feel it. I like to breath slow and count and think it slower rather than worry that it is too fast. I used to do this with my monitor but now I just do it by feeling my pulse. also remember that if you so much as move from a resting position it will automatically start to rise. This is normal. You should be resting for at least five minutes before checking.

Hi carnations,

Definitely keep taking things one step at a time. Be sure to take a moment to check out the box breathing and progressive muscle relaxation in the reference tools and tips. How has the relaxation techniques helped you?

sorry to hear about your BP. sometimes i can hear my heart beating fast and the panic cycle starts again. i keep trying to not focus on it and to use the relaxation techniques. is that what you do too ?
hope you feel better. :)

Hi CarnationsL...How are you doing? Hopefully great.
Hi Sunny..you're dealing with a lot..I'm hoping for you that you are all better by the end of Aug. That constant feeling of sand in your eyes must be so annoying. I bet you want to rub them like crazy but know you shouldn't. You are handling all this so well...I'd be very anxious. I've heard alot of negatives about beta-blockers...so I'm researching and will decide what I'm going to do.
Hi Davit...You too have alot to deal with...good luck with your teeth removal...will that take care of the infection in your jaw too? Add to that leaving one relationship and starting another...wow! Stress! no wonder you are having lots of What-ifs...It sounds like you are managing them well? Hope so.I hope your new relationship brings you much happiness.
As for my BP...It's the chicken and the egg senario...does my anxiety raise it...or does it raise my anxiety? I just took it 3 times..but I still can't bring myself to take it without  the display being covered. I figure it must be memories of past panic episodes that makes me anxious about it. But one step at a time..I'm taking it regularily.
If I had  just hypertension without anxiety then it would be easier. I'd do all the things I do now...try to exercise, eat right, ..etc...but not obsess about every beat of my heart.  Even this am I could feel my heart pound as soon as I thought about taking it...I've taken it tons of times since last month, and the readings are not that bad.. ( I get hubby to read them weekly, then I look.. some are higher than others, but I tell myself that since I'm still alive its ok) But I hate this irrational fear.

I remember about your dental surgery coming up.  Good luck Davit.   Happy for you and new relationship, summer is looking good!
I've had the eye surgery before, just uncomfortable, no anxiety.  I do need an extra one before the second, that's the only difference.  One is for the irises, the other for the whites.  They can't do it all at once and they only do half at a time.  So I will be going three times. I'm tired of waiting, feeling headachey and nauseus at times with this constant feeling of sand in my eyes (keratitis from the drops I am taking in the interim, to which I am very sensitive to preservatives - a real Catch 22) - it does hurt and keeps me awake sometimes and my eyes are bloodshot and swollen, if you can imagine.  We're hoping end of August should be all finished.
Cleo:  I have family history also of high BP.  Started in my late 40's also.  strokes too.  I take Nadol once a day, 40 mg.  It lowers heart rate a lot.  It's slower to get going as Davit says re: physical exertion, but you get used to starting slow and picking up the speed as you go along.  I think the side effect I felt first few wks. was tiredness.

Propranadol is a beta blocker that is being used more for its anti anxiety effects than to lower blood pressure. It works like the other beta blockers by reducing heart rate. It is commonly used by surgeons to stop hand shakes. Also musicians use it for stage fright. I have used it and it works quite well for panic, but not so well for reducing blood pressure. So I use atenolol for BP instead which doesn't work as well for anxiety. but I will take an extra one if I find anxiety pushing up my BP. With my Doctors permission and as long as I stay inside the guidelines.

I have to have some teeth surgically removed. I wish they could just be pulled but I have infection in my jaw so they won't freeze. I've left a relationship that wasn't working to one that is and the strain is adding to my anxiety level. I am waking up in the night with anxiety that I could do without. I am continually having "what ifs".  Good exposure if nothing else but I could do with out.

Davit,
Dr. Rx'd me inderol...new name propanadol...I know its a beta -blocker, and am aware of the side effects.  She only started me at 10 mg's  up to 3 times a day if needed. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it...She  and I  both think its my anxiety that raises my BP...but it can raise it so high that its dangerous...so in comes the inderal. Plus I'm in my late forties , have a family history of hypertension (and undiagnosed anxiety/depression), and could stand to lose a few pounds. I'm so new at taking any medications ..I know..I can dish it...but not take it! So I am open to any thougths/experiences.
What operation do you need to have? I hope all goes well . Let us know.

Hello cleo.

I never meant to be gone this long.  So what are you taking for a BP pill. The beta blockers are quick acting to regulate BP but they have an annoying side effect. They do not allow your pulse to speed up when you do need it. Such as hilling potatoes swimming or things like riding a bike up a hill. but they do wonders for slowing down a raceing heart during a panic attack. I have just had to start Cozar again because my antibiotic in the dose I take tends to stiffen the walls of veins and Cozar loosens them. I have a Doctor who allows me to adjust my medication according to what my monitor says as long as I stay in certain guidelines. This is a decision for you and your Doctor, But I will let you know what I know so you can talk to the Doc armed and ready.

Sunny I am so glad you are still here. I hope your pending operation isn't causing you too much anxiety I know mine is.

Davit.
