Finally here in Ohio

In Scotland (UK) where a ban has been in place for awhile, restauranteurs and bar owners feared that profits would fall. Apparently, the opposite has happened. Perhaps more non-smokers are venturing out to those once smoky places! Today marks the 1st day in Ohio that there will be no smoking in any bars, restaurants, bowling alleys and all work places. This makes it much easier for me to continue my journey. Already I have heard people make comments how they were going to quit bowling becuase the government is taking their right to smoke away. Even in my place of business, my employees are complaining. Alls I tell them it's going to be the law and that I tried to set an example that if I can quit so can you. For anybody else that their state, city or country that instituded a law like this, how long did it take people to grow accustomed to and do you think overall it's a positive or negative effect in the community? Bar owners are saying that they are going to lose 50% to 80% of their business and that they will probably close. Has this happened in new non-smoking communities? Just looking for thoughts and opinions if anyone would care to share. Here in Toronto The bars remain open, the restaurants still serve food, the folks that want to be healthy become healthy and choose life. There was a lot of grumbling and moaning and people still want to go out an socialize and gather with friends. Life goes on despite somking or non-smoking laws. :)

New Zealand has had this law in place for a couple of years now and at last people are getting used to it. Some bars are struggling wioth a big drop in trade. Most have provided a covered outside smoking area with tables chairs and heaters in winter. I play in an Irish band and have seen the effects of this legislation first hand. A particular pub in Rotorua where we used to have a regular gig has changed completely. everyone and I mean Everyone is sitting outside !!! the band is inside and we play to nobody !!! they would rather sit outside smoking and socialising than be inside dancing and enjoying themselves. there are two reasons for this either these people are really seriously addicted to nicotine or my band sucks badly !! The outcome for this bar ?? It is no longer a bar. Due to a huge drop in turnover it is now a cafe/restaurant. Although it is very nice to perform and sing in a smoke free bar I think that this law is wrong !!! This is the government going to far. I think that it should be the business owners right to decise whether the premises should be smoke free. That way the patrons of these establishments could decide for themselves whether they would like to go to a smokers bar or a smoke free bar. To my way of thinking this would have been a much better option. What happened to our basic right to choose for ourselves ?? I think our lives are over legislated as it is and this is just another nail in the coffin for the rights of the individual. what is going to be banned next ?? In Florida, you cannot smoke indoors at business establishments, EXCEPT if they are bars and less than 20% (I think) of their business comes from food. Restaurants are allowed to have a smoking area if they are ventilated separatel, but few have gone to that expense. I know of one only in my town that has done that. You can smoke in a regular bar that serves chips and nuts etc. I don't know that anyone has gone out of business, but I agree with Keith...establishments should be able to decide what they want to be and people can decide where they want to go.
