I'm Change

18 years ago 0 16 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Well I knew I wasn't alone in this, but I didn't know it was something everyone goes through. I started running in the mornings (since last Friday) to burn some of that "bad energy", so it wouldn't build up in me. But I might have to figure out something else, while I'm in the early stages of quitting. Any suggestions? Ever since I stopped smoking (almost a week ago), I've noticed a change in my mood. I've become quite short-tempered and even aggressive at time. It's like everything and everyone gets under my skin, and it annoys the hell out of me. I used to be this mellow, down to earth type of guy. But not anymore. Fortunately I have a lot of patience. I'm just afraid of blowing up all of the sudden. Has anyone experienced anything similar, and how did you "fight" it? Regards, Joe My Milage: My Quit Date: 4/4/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 5 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 83 Amount Saved: $10 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 4 Seconds: 48

All these things sound almost too familiar to me. I try to vent in "alternative" ways, like running/walking (I just came home from a nice long walk in the town). Yesterday, however, I expressed myself in writing. I simply listed all the things I hated, something I haven't done before. But it really helped somehow, smashing those keys, and posting it online for everyone to see (I keep a blog). Now I'm not sure of the psychological effect of writing like that, but it sure helped me calm down after that. I really hope this will blow over soon, because I don't really like it, and neither does my family. I've been thinking about anger management classes, would that be a good idea? Or would it be unnecessary, seeing that this stage is most likely only temporary? Once again, thank you everyone for all the replies and the good support. Hey Joe, Im so glad you asked this question. I was feeling the exact same thing. My hubby was commenting to me today that my fuse has gotten to be about a millameter long. He has been so good and just grins and bears it but he knows thats not the normal me. I'm at day 11 so I hope that it will get better soon but I deal me being snappy at least once a day. Thanks everyone for giving us hope that it does get better with time. Gumphfy Anyone who drove slower than me was an idiot - and anyone who drove faster was a maniac. Anyone in the store who had a kid crying had me looking for the mother to give her "the look" that meant she needed to address her screaming child. Some days, ya just want to be completely Pi**ed off at everyone and make nasty comments. Healer is right on with her walking. I didn't get my walk in today and it totally made me hostile. Make time for you to do your stress management - that will just have to come first, as I have found out the hard way. Some days is all fetching and not pats on the head! Today kinda felt that way - but it would have whether I smoked or not! HANGIN IN NOT GIVIN IN. It's okay to be really ticked off sometimes.  CobenFan My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 271 Amount Saved: $52.5 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 11 Mins: 25 Seconds: 6

Hi gumphfy - Big congrats on your 5 days!! Way to go! Anger - yepper, it visits me too, and some days it's about 'get outta my way' GRRRRR..... It was, for me, alot worse the first 2 weeks, but the anger is still with me, just under the surface... It does come and go more now, but it's there. I try to be aware of it and I make sure to give myself ME time, which has helped so much... And I walk every day and that helps me too... It moves the energy out and around. And walking also helps keeps me centered rather than upside down with emotions. I go up and down even at 35 days, but it does get better. The best advice I can give is ride those emotions, all emotions that come up, like a wave. Truth for me is that it is like a big tidal wave. Anger, lots of tears, alot of frustration, all part of the Quit. Be patient w/yourself, and like SUNSHINE said - don't hold on to those emotions, come here and vent and get them out. We're here to listen, hold your hand, to support and to care:) Love and many blessings- Healer :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 35 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,257 Amount Saved: $84 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 15 Mins: 51 Seconds: 50

Joe, You are right on track, anger is an emotional reaction of the quit. I don't know if I told you before but I have anger, but most of the time it toward myself. I have got to learn to be more gentle with myself. But it doesn't last long. At first everything made me angry and got under my skin, and like you I am a very gentle and loving person but this is what this addiction does to you. It to will go away. Sometimes it is good to let those emothions out and not hold them in. Keep holding on and stay tuff!!! Joe, You're on the right track by running, exercise is wonderful for getting rid of all those emothions. Drink lots of water to wash all those chemicals out of your system. Hang in there Joe.... Joe, I glad that you wrote down your feelings in words that helped me. After my husband died I wrote him a letter and I could not believe the relief I felt. About the Anger Management if you feel as though it will help you then go for it. But I have a feeling this will pass soon if you keep up with your program. Just keep doing what you are doing especially the walking an running. And remember to drink lots of water. I am still thinking of you, so hold on tight and tuff. :) Blessings sent your way, SUNSHINE My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 93 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,590 Amount Saved: $325.5 Life Gained: Days: 13 Hrs: 10 Mins: 47 Seconds: 54

Hi Gumphfy! I would say i was more emotional in the beginning and it felt like people were messing with me because i had quit smoking. You really need to give yourself time to heal and recover. The first 2 weeks were hardest for me. Now i'm at 3 months and it's so refreshing to be ok with it. Take care of yourself first and foremost and definatly reward yourself. Now that i think about it smoking really didn't help me handle stress better, i actually think i would get more fired up when i was smoking. Some smokers think that smoking helps them relax but i think it's really only a distraction. You will be that down to earth guy again it is just going to take some time for you to recover from withdrawals. It is still very early, pat yourself on the back for a job well done and give it some more time cause it will get easier!! Hang in there!
