I am quitting at midnight!

Hi Sarah. Remember, you aren't giving up anything. You're stopping. There's a difference. :) Giving up implies you're getting something out of it. You don't, that's why you're stopping. I'm Cold Turkey as well btw. Something I do...

For some this might be too much of a temptation, but here goes. Firstly - I have not smoked indoors for a good 10 years. Meaning it's a habit to step outside the front door to smoke. Now, I do crave a cigarette at times, the same way I crave chocolate. I really, really fancy some - but if I don't have any, then I forget about it shortly after. But... then I nibble. *sigh* So the other day I was bemoaning the fact that I 'd like to have something to get my mind off the nibbles, something *like* a cigarette but not a cigarette. So I reached for a cigarette. Instead of lighting it, I dripped peppermint oil on the tip. So "inhaling" through the cigarette gets me the peppermint smell atm, nothing more. I just drip more onto it (the same one) and "inhale". When the craving gets really hard and I need to collect my thoughts, I grab that peppermint oiled Ciggy and step outside. I don't even have to put it in my mouth, but if I'm out there without that thing, I feel even dumber (not that I don't feel dumb doing this), and it seems to help getting my mind off things. Note - do NOT light it, and if you are tempted to light up, don't do this. I have a feeling if they made peppermint flavored inhalers that had the feel of a -filter- cigarette... (I don't like those plastic cigarette shaped things, and they'd get me nicotine which is what I *don't* want.) Would you like a mentor? (Take 2)

Well I'm new, I'm not really struggling at the moment, but if anyone wants to mentor me... or wants a quit-buddy... :)

Cold turkey or NRT that is a question

So far cold turkey works for me, but it doesn't for my other half. Stopped after (during!) Allen Carr Clinic and using nothing at all. (Which I still find rather odd) I smoked 20-30 a day, so did my boyfriend. I don't have withdrawal symptoms as such, or rather I don't crave the cigarettes constantly, but I do have times where I really really want one as a distraction. Also, I write. Well, I *did* write. Last time I quit my brain dried up - and now it's doing the same thing again. I can't seem to get the stories onto paper anymore. :(

New gal :)

Hi all, just found this site. I actually stopped on the 11th December. Cold turkey. No patches, no nothing. The Allan Carr clinic might just score another success. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 12 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 369 Amount Saved: 55.8 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 3 Mins: 20 Seconds: 47

Coping mechanisms

I've smoked outside for years, so at least I don't have to cope with the bad smell indoors or on clothes, and my boyfriend also smokes outside, so that's not an issue. However, I still go outside just like I did before, stand out there a few minutes, talk to the other half if he's having a smoke, or just take a few deep breaths. I'm not changing that routine just because I don't smoke anymore. A bit of fresh air during a commercial break on TV won't do me any harm after all. :) But chewing gum is my new vice. Gotta really stop that lol.

getting family to quit

Oh boy if someone gave me a "Quit smoking" book or something like that for Christmas... I'd be guaranteed to smoke twice as much in defiance because not only would I be angry with the person giving me such a "gift", but also with myself for making them think of me as an ashtray. I'd also never read that book. Don't do it unless you want them to avoid you in future. (Which is what I would do.) However, if you want to get them to stop, how about asking them if they would consider one of the Allen Carr clinics if you gave it to them as a present? Or a voucher for something like that? Not as a Christmas thing, but as a "when you're ready, I'm going to help" kind of present. I realize you mean well, but ask yourself how you would have reacted when you were still smoking, if someone had done what you suggested. I bet you'd have felt horribly guilty, angry and ashamed. Not a nice thing at Christmas, and likely to have the exact opposite effect you're trying to achieve. Ergo - not a good plan even though you mean well. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 15 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 478 Amount Saved: 69.75 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 11 Mins: 22 Seconds: 29

New gal :)

Well I made it through Christmas Day and still smoke free. (YAY!) Thanks for the encouraging words btw and another BTW - the amount saved calculator is wrong. :P Today it should be: Smoke Free: 14 Cigarettes not smoked: 420 (30/day) Amount saved: 97.65 (4.65 / 20) But it shows: Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 445 Amount Saved: 65.1 <-- confused My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/11/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 14 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 445 Amount Saved: 65.1 Life Gained: Days: 1 Hrs: 9 Mins: 1 Seconds: 14

Question - Any Writers out there?

Here is the thing. I've quit 14 days ago. I don't crave a cigarette constantly, it's more like "Oh I could murder a chocolate bar right now" than "OMG must BREATHE!" That's the good part. Here is the bad part. I write. Always, constantly, my brain buzzing and chattering away, stories wanting out on paper whether they are any good or not. A few years ago I stopped smoking for 8 months - and started again. Part of the reason was because the clatter and buzzing just stopped. Well, it's happening again. I still have stuff going on in my head, but I can't write it down. (Forgive me if that all sounds really weird. I have full color surround sound movies going on in my head usually and I write down what I "see" and "hear". Kinda hard to explain.) The movie is still there, the sound is still there. The ability to put it on paper is... gone. Again. We haven't smoked indoors for years, so it's not the fact that I don't smoke in front of the computer - I didn't do that in the first place. But I used to go outside to smoke, collect my thoughts and then type it all up in a mad rush. I still go outside, just now I take deep breaths instead of that smoke, but the mad rush no longer happens and it tempts me to start again to be perfectly honest. If you write, and this has happened to you, and you got around it somehow, please, please share what you did.
