Got Sick

Hi Smiling, CONGRATULATIONS on your first 8 days as a non-smoker! Sorry to hear that you're not feeling well... I have to agree with Riverdale Man... Water, Water and more Water... You might want to try some herbal tea for that sore throat, and the long hot soak in the tub is wonderful. Also, get as much rest as possible, as your body readjusts itself, and heals. My doctor informed me that a large part of the problem was that my body wasn't producing the mass amounts of mucus it had to produce to protect itself from the cigarette smoke, and that was part of the reason I felt bad around the 1.5 week period... My system was just having to readjust to the newness of being a non-smoker. But... Like Riverdale Man said, if in doubt or too much pain or the symptoms don't quickly go away, see your health care provider. My 30 Day Reward - YOUR REWARDS?

Hey Healer, Congratulations on reaching that *next* milestone, and taking the time and effort to reward your hard work. You're asking about rewards... My very first reward came at the one week point... I went to the dentist and had my teeth cleaned! All those layers of Nicotine being stripped away was a WONDERFUL feeling. I LOVE music.... I listen to pop/rock (young music for an old guy (I'm 35, so not that old)) So I usually try to allow myself an album download from iTunes every week as a reward... That's become a Sunday ritutal. On my 30 day mark, I went to dinner in the City (San Francisco) to my favorite restaurant with my Partner to celebrate. On my 100 day mark I bought a coffee bean roaster and 50 pounds of green coffee beans, and became an offical coffee snob :o) It's something I've always wanted to try, but I always burned my spare money, instead of putting it back in a jar for something I really wanted. I'm amazed at how fast that jar fills up, when I put that US $4.18 into it every day, just the same as if I were still buying that pack of cigarettes daily. The void, the emptiness and that feeling in the gut!

Hi Colleen, I'd say that what you're experiencing isn't the "norm." and - from reading your post, it seems like you've struggled with these feelings for awhile now. A lot of people I know started smoking to mask something about themselves they didn't want to deal with (myself included). This may be the case with you. It may not be. All the same, if you are having these feelings for long periods of times, you should talk to your health care professional about them. There's help out there when we become overwhelmed by feelings such as these. Seek support from your friends and family if you can, and from the group, but most of all from the professionals that can guide you through rough patchs, if need be. Hoping you feel better soon, Jackey My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/22/2005 Smoke-Free Days: 110 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,210 Amount Saved: $459.8 Life Gained: Days: 15 Hrs: 0 Mins: 37 Seconds: 44

let me try this again...

DD... 5 is HUGE.... God, in the beginning, I think I celebrated every 2 days :o) The truth is: Every day is a Victory! Congratulations to you. Just think, you'll never have to go through that first weekend without cigarettes again. You've passed that milestone. In 2 days you'll be able to say you'll never have to go through that first week without cigarettes again. Everytime you turn around, your passing a milestone. Do something to Celebrate these rites of passage. Day Number 2

What a typo to make... As an English major... I should really edit my posts before I send them out.... That was meant to be... remember to breathe deep and savor each smoke FREE breath! My first day...

Nikki, CONGRATULATIONS on your decision to tackle your addiction to Nicotine! I went cold turkey too, and in the long run, I think that was the right decision for me. If you can, meditate. That helps me a lot. I get out when I can to walk, that not only helps with the smoking cessation, but it also helps with any weight issues that might arise from nervous eating while in the beginning quit stages. I repeat this one a lot, because it keeps me focused more than anything else: Count to 8: 1001, 1002, 1003...1008, and then remind yourself that someone dies every 8 seconds due to a tobacco related illness. That almost always gets me through a bad patch. Another thing to remember: The average nicotine craving lasts less that five minutes. That's not too long to stay strong. You've got a great community here to whine/rant/brag/talk/question and be part of. Enjoy the SSC community and don't forget your Glove Compartment, if you haven't already been there. Not A Good Day =(

Hey There Duckie, Hope you're feeling some better today... I have one comment.... You said "sorry if I sound whiney..." It's okay to be Whiney during these days :) Your body is going through some major changes. Hang in there and take care of you. This is just one of the phases that you go through as you heal. Don't forget to reward yourself, for the great job you're doing for yourself. 121 days, 4 months, 1/3 year...

So, today is the beginning of my 4th month of liberation from Nicotine :) What have I noticed? Yes, I've gained a few pounds, but my doctor has dropped my blood pressure medication due to the fact that my body no longer needs the medication to keep my pressure at an optimal range :) I can work out twice as long as I could when I was smoking. I've lost that horrible cough, as I've finally stopped coughing up the tar that has coated my insides for years. My sense of smell is so greatly improved that I can't sit in the den, due to the fact that I can smell where we've burned logs in the fireplace :) Guess who's going to be washing down the inside of the fireplace this weeking ;) So, I'm finally craving the quit with all my being, and just proud as I can be... Here's wishing you all joyous quits and a wonderful weekend.
