Greetings and a lengthy introduction

That is going to be the big challenge for me - Determining what is a symptom of my anxiety of what is a real condition. I am defintitely going to have to pick up ginger mint tea.  I love ginger.  I love mint - and I love tea!
Well, thank you again - I visited because I was starting to feel a little dizzy and a little anxious - and your posts have helped (Your posts and some box breathing which I just read about!)  Enjoy!

Change Your Exercise Habits

Davit, you've done it again.  Thank you.  What does work for me is something that my therapist suggested - when I get that little flutter of panic in the middle of my run, I tell myself  "This is a panic attack.  It is annoying.  It will not kill me"  That is usually a great start.  I just have to keep practicing, I suppose!

Challenging Worry €“ Progressive Muscle Relaxation

I began using this technique a couple of weeks ago after my therapist gave me a script to use (Start with your toes and tense them, then relax, ect - just kind of a road map for which general muscle groups to use).  My 11-year old daughter and I decided it would be fun to make a recording of one of us reading the script which we play it at night before she goes to bed .  Anyway, I find that the nights when I make time to practice this are much better!  I would encourage any members who haven't tried this techinque to do so!

Talking to your kids

Hi Josie:
This summer, when my daughter was away at camp and I first began experiencing great anxiety, I explained to my eight-year-old son that I was feeling sad and nervous.  He was, in fact, very helpful and gave me lots of hugs and one day told me that I should focus on "right now" and to be happy that we were together (I don't know where he came up with these wonderful things to say!)
When my daughter came home, my anxiety lessened a huge amount but it has resurfaced in the last few weeks. She is 11 and I explained to her that sometimes I get nervous or scared or sad and not always for a reason that makes sense.  She enjoys practicing progressive relaxation techiniques with me and after the first time that we did those together she remembered a visualization/relaxation "game" they played at camp.  I sometimes suggest we play this game if I am having a bad day on a weekend.  We had some gloomy and rainy weekends and my anxiety was high.
I don't know if being so open was the correct choice or not.  You've reminded me that I need to be aware of their feelings and any anxiety that they have.  I love Davit's shopping bag of positive ideas.  One thing that I am going to be sure to start is to give my kids plenty of positive ideas for their "shopping bags" and to make sure that they have lots of wonderful things to think about.
Thanks for asking,
Carmie

Sugar Substitutes

Hugs4U - I love those songs.  Some friends and I were going to start a bubble gum band, playing songs like those but it never took off.  Because my anxiety often manifests itself as dizziness, I have also had the song "Dizzy" on my mind (It's similar to those other two songs - but not about sugar).
I have to confess that I use sugar substitutes quite a bit.  I have Spenda in my coffee and I used to have caffeine-free diet coke at lunch. I would love to make some diet changes so that I have a more natural diet!

What are you thankful for?

First of all, I think it's very cute that we three responders have cat pictures!
I am thankful for my wonderful and supportive friends and family.  When I first starting having panic attacks, they often happened in the middle of the night and I would always wake my husband (another person who I need to hug and thank today!)  because I really wanted to talk about how afraid I was.  My husband is lovely but I think my attacks scared him and he wasn't always the best person to talk with at these difficult times.  He would try to help by saying "Try to relax".  Anyway,  I have a dear friend who works at night and who has suffered from anxiety in the past (He works at a post office). He was so helpful to me on a few occasions when I was having a bad time in the middle of the night.  I will be sure to thank him today!  It is a gift to have a friend to talk with who understands AND is available at off hours.  I would also like to thank Davit and others on this site who have been kind about listening when I needed to "talk"/type.  Thank you!

Sugar Substitutes

This is great to know, Hugs.  I learned a couple of weeks ago that as part of our health care benefits, I am able to visit with a nutritionist (I can't remember how many times).  What I am thinking now is that perhaps I can find a nutritionist who knows a thing or two about how the food we eat impacts mood and anxiety.  That would be a gift.  I took up running this year which helped my weight and my mood very much - but I definitely believe that I have opportunities for positive changes in my diet.

circling.

Davit, I am hopeful that you will find answers and ways to lessen your anxiety soon.  Your advice has been very helpful to me over the past few days.  I wish that I had some good advice to share with you in return.  I logged in today because I was having an anxious morning (I am overtired, I think this is why).  I am trying to take inventory of what's on my mind and challenging the anxious thoughts.  I find this works most of the time.  Please keep us updated and take care.

Sugar Substitutes

Wow, this was a most enlightening post.  As background, my first panic attack coincided with me being dehydrated and needing emergency care.  I was very dizzy and lost coordination which was pretty frightening.  So now, when I experience dizziness (my doctor and therapist believe that my dizziness is caused by anxiety - but it could also be caused by my diet), I feel anxious.  It seems to me that I should increase my calcium (and call the dietician!).  Also, I had been experiencing panic attacks in the middle of my exercise and perhaps that is related to my 02 levels.  Learning new things gives me so many tools to use - I love it!
