Arms & Legs Falling Asleep-Not What I Thought

hey Deanna,

being anxious all the time really does put a lot of strain in your muscles, its not surprising they start acting a weird way. i find massage therapy really and acupuncture really good at relieving the by-products of anxiety.  its gets the blood flowing, releases the lactic acid build ups and it just makes me feel great.

Hi Im Kevin

Hey Kevin, welcome to the group.

I myself have only been here for about two weeks and i can see the improvement already, the relaxation part of the course (which i recommend to do straight after section 1) has been fully integrated into my life and it works very well for me.

make sure you read the success stories but also the setback stories, there will always be setbacks and how well you cope with them will determine your progress. just know you are not alone, if you have any questions or just want to rant (like i do sometimes ) feel free. there is no judgment here.

no time to plan for this exposure

Hi everyone,

thank you for your support.  i know it was a very large exposure ( i would rate it at about 90/100 for me) and even though i stopped on the way there im super happy. thank you davit for stopping me from getting carried with the negative, i was thinking about a bit this morning but as the day went on i felt more and more proud of myself. i dont want to forget it, even the stopping which makes me laugh because we were approx. 3 mins away from our destination lol

Sunny I, i did reward myself with a nice relaxing bath  and a good nights sleep!

The final obstacle i think in my path to overcome my panic will be to drive over the bridge i had my first panic on, thats a big bridge, its really long and intimidating but i will work upto that one i think .

yoga and meditation

the box breathing exercises and progressive muscle relaxation techniques are both forms of yoga. they are great for your physical and mental health.

since i started working on my panic attacks i have been doing daily yoga and meditate everyday. i find this helps me immensly. being mindful of your situation, your body and your mind really puts it into perspective and help you through most situations that make you anxious.

yoga is great because you are exercising the muscles and relieving the tension and strain and put good use to the adrenaline in your body, but yoga is much more important than that, it is the only form of exercise that and works out your inner organs like your pancreas, kidneys, prostate in men, liver etc...

meditation is also a wonderful thing,  start each day by centering yourself and end each day with a release of all negativity and get ready for a new day.

yoga and meditation

you are right, the whole point of yoga and meditation is find the calmness and the silence inside. after a few weeks of practice i remember the first time i found the silence and i will never forget it. it was only for a second but it was bliss. now i find it every time i meditate and i carry it through with me for the whole day

Making adjustments

hey red, i personally am i music lover, so whenever i feel claustrophobic of the real world i go to my music room. its just a little room in my house, that has pictures of the things i love, musicians, mucical art, pictures of me and my friends playing music and has my instruments in it and i just go in there and relive happy memories and just be surrounded by it. if its possible maybe you could have a room with pictures of places you have been and memories for you to relive.

health anxiety

hey kevzabob,

this i can totally relate to, recently i had cold and took some cold and flu medication which contained ephedrine and i had an allergic reaction resulting in a tacycardia, this is one of the reasons i suffer from anxiety.

i have also been to the hospital had every single test done, i must have spent 60 hours in emergency waiting for test upon test only to be rejected and leaving the doctors dumbfounded as to why i was there.

the day i started to accept the fact i had anxiety and was was prone to panic attacks and even though they were uncomfortable and most of the time scary, they weren't going to kill me was the start of the turnaround for me, this happened before i started CBT.

just because you accept that you have anxiety doesnt make you powerless, in fact it takes the power away from the anxiety. one you accept that you have it, there is no need to get anxious about being anxious and if your not getting anxious about being anxious then theres no need to be anxious.

Feeling lost

kevzabob,

i also want to warn against ativan, in the space of 4 weeks i went from taking 1mg a day to taking 6mg a day, by the end of the 4 weeks i went psychotic and had a complete mental breakdown and needless to say i ended up in a psych ward for 2 weeks while they weened me off the stuff. coming off ativan was terrible, i had the shakes, i hallucinated and nearly went crazy.

dont get me wrong, ativan will help you get through the rough times but please dont rely on it get you through the day like i did.

you are stronger than you think and know that you will get better

safe behaviours

a couple of weeks ago i noticed that i have a lot of safe behaviors (SB). here is a list of a few of my SB's

not going anywhere by myself
chewing gum
eating sugary foods
carrying a rock that i brought home from kenya to remind me of a happy time
taking multiple baths a day
taking a sleeping pill everynight to get to sleep
carrying a sleeping pill with me in case i have a panic attack (zopiclone is a non benzodiazipime sleeping pill and works really well for panic attacks)
taking to people for hours on the phone etc etc...

whenever i felt anxious i would resort to one or more of the things above to help me 'get through the day' but as the panic is decreasing i have to remove these safe behaviors as if i dont i am more likely to relapse.

i just wanted to note that my goal is to remove ALL of these safe behaviors in the coming weeks, the food one is going to be tough as i love eating lol but many have been stricken already and i dont feel as hopeless as i did, the things listed above will not stop me from having anxiety they are just distractions.

today i shall be attempting (for the 4th time) to sleep without sleeping pills.

safe behaviours

i think that using the safe behaviours to recover from panic, for me anyway, can actually be more harmful. if for example i am in a situation where i don't get a chance to do my safe behaviour and sy\tart feeling anxious, then its going to be a guaranteed panic attack.

its very hard to remove things that become almost automatic. consciously taking away these things makes me anxious.

ill keep you  updated
