Myth or Fact?

My Mom is a very nervous, fearful, worrier type of person.  I have learned a lot of fear behavior from her.  I don't blame her, she had a chaotic childhood.  The good news is, as an adult, I am responsible for changing my behavior and unlearning fear.  I've been able to do that through this program and with all of the support from everyone on this site.  Thank you all.

Coping Skill Ideas For A Specific Situation

I have read the Resolving Disputes session and have thought about all of the ideas from this thread.  Davit, I love you.  You are my defender.  SIM,  You described the kind of person this guy is - exactly.  He is vengeful.  Our neighbor's dog, who barks all night, got a razor blade sandwich.  The dog was smart enough to bring the blade to his owner and was unharmed.  I know my neighbors and he is the first person that came to mind for that act.  Samantha, Reading the session helped clarify a few things.  What I've decided to do, that's best for me, is to focus on the positive.  He doesn't use the dummy launcher that sounds like a shot gun.  I'm going to use the Negative Thoughts Form and challenge my negative thinking about the situation.  I haven't forgotten you, Red.  I like the idea of getting away once in awhile.  If I can get up early enough, I could go to the local coffee shop and relax while he's blowing whistles for an hour every morning.  I was thinking about getting one of those white noise machines where you can play the soothing sounds of the ocean or rain forest.  If I turn it on while he's doing that, I may get an extra hour of sleep.  I truly appreciate all of you and your friendship and help with this situation.  I don't know what I would do without you.  I am glad you are my friends.  I am truly blessed.

How To Make Friends

I am truly grateful for all of the friends I have on this site.  I wish we could all get together for coffee, tea or lunch.  I am a housewife and I don't know how to make friends.  It seems that everyone in our area works or has friends and family that live close by and don't need to make friends.  Some people are just not friendly or are suspicious.  I just feel odd going up to a person and saying, "Hey, you wanna be friends?"  I'm trying to find people who have the same interests and hobbies, like a club or something.  But, most of them meet at night or on weekends and that's the only time I have to spend with my husband.  I wish I could find some empty nesters.  It was easy making friends when I was in school or college.  But, I am isolated, not by choice, because I just don't know where to go to meet new friends.  All of you have helped me so much with all of your ideas which trigger more ideas in my mind.  I wondered how you all make friends and meet people.  I appreciate you all, more than you know.  Thanks.

To My Forever Friend Davit,

You are inspiring me to start a new garden next season.  We have a lot of beautiful song birds.  My husband's hobby is making bird houses, so they have lots of homes.  We have a lot of rare Bluebirds (of happiness :)  My favorite are the Cardinals.  We also have Flickers that look just like Red Headed Woodpeckers.  They are fun to watch.  My dream is to have chickens (laying hens).  When we move to the country, I will do that.  When they don't produce eggs anymore, I will keep them as pets and they can live out their lives happily in their retirement hen house :)  I would get them now, but the fire dept. has a tornado siren that they test twice yearly.  So, we have to evacuate with the 2 Chihuahuas and our one eyed Kitty.  I can't imagine packing up a flock of chickens as well (although we have a van  :)  I've always wanted a greenhouse, did you build it yourself?  I like who you are too Davit.  You have been a God send for me.  I have learned so very much from you and there aren't enough thank you's in the world to express my appreciation.  You are so knowledgeable, I think you should write a book.  I will buy the first copy :)  You are helping so many people.  I also think you would be a great Health Educator as well.

Conquering Your Fears

Red,

I share in your joy!  You made a key point regarding, not only have you changed for the better, but so have others around you.  I shocked my daughter by sitting in the center of the movie theater with her instead of choosing an end seat.  I'm finding my family is more relaxed and really happy for me.  I'm  so proud of you!  I'm finding the world a less scary place as well.  God bless you and continue your excellent work.  And, thanks for sharing, it is so encouraging and helpful to all of us.  Your friend, Shari

How To Make Friends

Thanks everyone for all of the great ideas!  You are all very kind and helpful.  I'm going to look into some things when my daughter leaves for college next week.  I'll let you all know what I'm up to :)

Teebs, I am not a fair weather friend and I will be happy to be your friend forever.  Age is just a number, I will be 48 next month, but I think friends of all ages are fantastic.  Everyone can learn from each other whether you're younger or older.  I think you are a great person!  Your friend, Shari

Coping Skill Ideas For A Specific Situation

Thanks Teebs,

He does whistle at the same time every day.  I couldn't find a white noise machine that has waterfall and rain forest sounds, but I did find an enviraScape relaxation fountain.  Mine has a Mariposa flower bloom on it and the water trickles down and makes a soothing sound.  I'm hoping it's enough to block out shrill whistles and I'm still on the look out for the waterfall sound machine.  He is violating our town's law.  The Sheriff told me if a person blows whistles or makes loud noises and it bothers 1 person in town, it is against the law.  The Sheriff talked to him, and found out he is a volunteer fireman.  So, apparently, he is above the law, because they won't enforce it.  So, I'm going to have to adjust my reaction to it.

Dear Cleo,

I'm glad to see your post :)  I'm no expert, but I think you can ripen tomatoes by putting them in a brown paper bag :)

Thanks Davit!

Love the greenhouse!  No chance of losing me - I'd like to stay around for the long term.  I need this support group and all of my friends here.  You are all to valuable to lose.  I'm going to get 4 chickens!  And, I'll post the photo of them as my Avatar when I get them.  What kind of chickens do you like?  I like Buff Orpingtons, Barred Plymouth Rocks, Dominiques (my daughter's name :)  Red Sex-Link (the female chicks are red and I think the males are white).  I'm going to dive into my chicken books, because I know there are more breeds that I like.  We are not zoned for Roosters, because of the noise ordinance.  I find this hilarious, because of all the noise the fire dept. makes and my good friend, Mr. Whistles :)

Exposure Success Story

Hi Everyone,

Here's one for the books...I was merrily driving down the road with no one in sight, until...I saw one of those slow moving 10 mile per hour industrial mowers right in front of me.  I had practically come to a hault.  I had the oddest reaction to it, I just started laughing my head off and I couldn't stop laughing.  The lady behind me looked impatient and irritated being stuck behind the mower.  I don't even want to know what she thought of my reaction to it.  It felt so good to find this situation humorous instead of having a full blown panic attack.  I am making progress!
