First day of Fall!

Shari,
I had been wondering how you were doing and I'm so glad to hear you are doing well. Congratulations on all your successes, your new positive mindset, and happy birthday too!

I too am getting to a place where I'm not having panic attacks very often. I've still been frustrated with the anxiety even though it doesn't often get to a full blown attack, and I can use your positive outlook as inspiration to be proud of how far I've come rather than frustrated with how far I still want to go.

Keep in touch here now and again, and keep shrinking those dragons!

Can´t sleep... again

KT,

I have also gotten to the place where I'm doing a lot better and stop working so hard to permanently recover from my anxiety. This just happened to be last year - in December and January I was doing terrible, and that's when I first joined this site. Then things improved, and I didn't log in for a couple of months, only to suffer a major flare up when I started my job up again and moved away from home.

I definitely still have that underlying fear that anxiety may always be looming in the background ready to come back and take over my life at any time. But this time I'm committing to still working through all that this program suggests, even though things have improved some in the last few weeks. Every time there is a relapse, I have to remember that I have more tools in place to cope with it and recover from it. And all the recent discussions on here about identifying and changing negative core beliefs have helped me realize that I can fix some of the underlying reasons for my anxiety, and that it's not just going to jump back out at me from out of the blue.

I tell you all this in hopes that it will help you believe, as I have learned to believe, that you can make a full recovery from this! Try working through the program again, and use the coping mechanisms and worksheets to help you through those rough mornings. And always feel free to post here - I've found that one of the most helpful things of all!!

Take care,
Teebs

Hello all!

Attacus,

Welcome to the site! You have definitely come to the right place. I hope you will start working through session one, and you'll probably start noticing at least some minor improvements as you read through the program and do the homework.

As far as eating goes, I also have a strong fear of vomiting and during my bad panic attack flare up a couple months ago I had trouble eating a whole meal too. One thing I tried was eating smaller amounts throughout the day rather than a couple of big meals, which seemed to help (and is supposed to be healthier for you anyway!). I also tried using the questions the program provides about challenging my negative thoughts, and one that kept coming up for me was, "How often have you eaten and then thrown up just from eating and/or feeling full?" The answer was - never! Learning that it as just anxiety and that in all likelihood I wouldn't actually throw up started to help after I kept repeating it to myself.

It's tough to explain to someone who doesn't have anxiety just what you're going through when you get panic attacks. Hopefully your boyfriend will be supportive even if he doesn't understand everything you're going through. One thing I did that helped was have my boyfriend read some basic stuff about panic attacks (maybe he could read part of this program too) which gave him a better understanding and helped him realize that just telling me to snap out of it wasn't going to be helpful!

You CAN get out of your current problems. I am working on it, and there are others on this site that have succeeded in making a full recovery. If you commit to working through the program on this site, you will start noticing a difference before you know it!

I also don't like the side effects that go with taking medications, but I have told myself it is worth it to experience the relief in the here and now as I work through some of the deeper stuff with a CBT program. I'd encourage you to talk to your doctor about your concerns about the medications and see what he/she advises. I do know that some anti-depressants do come in liquid form though!

Feel free to post on this site any time. You will always find understanding here, as well as support, answers, and encouragement!

symptom tracker - what´s a panic attack?

Matt,

This is a great question. I also don't have full blown panic attacks too often and have wondered about how to use this feature. Pretty much whenever I do have what I consider a panic attack my anxiety is at an 8-10 - I don't really consider an anxious moment of a 5 a full blown attack.

If it helps, what I do is rate my daily anxiety level (1-10) based on how anxious I felt and how many waves of anxiety I had, and still tick didn't have a panic attack, and I use this as my scale to see how I'm doing overall. When I re-started the program in August I had lots of 8s and 9s, and now I'm down to more 3s, 4s, and 5s for daily anxiety levels, which is a nice way to see my progress.

I'll be interested to hear what others are doing.

One Step a time

Red -

This is an awesome post. Thanks for reminding me that the tortoise method works - I too started out as a hare and have gone back to take it slowly one step at a time.  Your quilt is beautiful - congratulations! You deserve to be so proud of yourself.

Newbie, any advice appreciated!

Drew -

Welcome to the site! I'll echo what the others have said, and tell you that you are definitely not alone and that if you put the work into this program it really will help.

My advice to you is definitely start working through the program, but take time to do the homework. I tried rushing through it the first time and that didn't build the solid foundation I needed to start really getting better. Also, when you're feeling as terrible as you are, it's important to find some activities that will relax you and take your mind off the constant worrying as much as possible. When I was experiencing some of my hardest days, I tried to focus on working on my anxiety issues all day every day. Well, that never gave my body a much-needed break from the constant state of near-panic! Yoga sounds good, as do any hobbies that you enjoy and might distract you for a while.

Take care, and as Sunny said, feel free to post here as often as you want!

Hobbies

Cleo,

Be proud of yourself for going and making it through the appointment - that is the real success, not weather or not your BP reading was "perfect"! The realization that happened afterwards for you sounds like a huge breakthrough, too.

My mom doesn't suffer from much anxiety or panic attacks but she also gets waves of nerves that lead to high BP readings at the doctor. I just thought I'd mention that in case it helps you feel better at all...it's certainly not a sensation you're alone in!
