Earliest Recollections

Oh, Anne-Marie, Thank you so much for offering the quote of the day..I will be glad to help spread the inspiration around. I love quotes and always have. Do you want them in a specific place, or just as they apply? Red

What is Agoraphoba?

I have avoidance issues now still since 1994, and I go with my gut reaction. As I am not sure if this Agoraphobia or my little person inside keeping me safe. If I had listened to him on Oct. 10, 1994, I would have stayed home and would never have been in that wreck. What is one to believe? The person inside trying to keep you safe..or the drs who say you are not without problems? Delicate way of putting it EH? Quitting smoking made me shake so bad.it was terrible. Detox, I believe. That is over and I thank the Higher Powers. as I needed to do that, but needed strong support. Certainly did get it, and many thanx, again. This message was edited by am on 1-26-02 @ 1:19 AM

Hi! Welcome!

Anne-Marie, This panic thing can lie dormant ffor years and all of a sudden, thee it is. something will trigger this feeling...this horrible, sinking, gut wrenching, heart-beating, sweaty problem. Now obviously there are degrees to which each person suffers. Mine has been with me a lond time andI really think that old habits die hard. We get into a denial thing, pretending it is "nothing", when in fact it is. It is when you feel out of control with it that you must seek help. Has anyone noticed your reaction? Is this new? Please don't think for one minute, that you have something horrible wrong.you know better than that..but this is a sneaky disorder, and our minds love to play games, deny, file it somewhere else. I have one of those minds, but do notgive it an inch anymore..I make a note and take it to the PhD. So my mind has realized that it cannot play with me. I had to do a lot of work on it in the stopsmoking center. Red LOL

Family members

Anne-Marie, This is such a wonderful subject. Including the family/friends. I have to say that years ago it was not "acceptable" spcially to seek mental health, and everything was hush-hush, as I am sure you are aware. Today, with things of this nature being out in the open, and mental health an openly discussed topic, one would think that everyone involved would be included in a treatment plan. Maybe this is why the suicide rate so so high. I think some pressue needs to be put on the responsibile party so that people are safer from themselves at a time when they can do harm. How would a family deal with a panic attack if they did not even know what a panic attack was? This sure is some food for thought. In my life of having panic attacks, my psrents took the "give her some candy" and it will pass approach. This was fun for me..but they never got me the help I needed to understand what was wrong with me. This site would be a valuable tool for helping people understand the problems and maybe approach the family themselves. There is no shame in having this disorder..I joke about my problem all the time. It is not the end of my world for sure..and I really do not know if there is a set answer to your question. I believe that people, ince diagnosed, should explain to the family thenselves. What do you think.? there are no deep, dark secrets like way back when I was young..and it wasn't discussed at all. Books

You have done a beautiful job in the construction of this site, and I am enjoying going thru each area and reading the materials you have to offer. In the section on managing and becoming active in your treatmant, I wanted to add about books. Once I had gotten settled in with my doctor, and I saw the "Glimmer of Light", that I was starting to make progress, my doctor handed me a workbook. This was a key element in my healing. Today I have many books on various facets of Panic Disorder, and am not done reading books on this subject. The medical proffesion is making strides and people the the decision to be treated . People have to WANT to go to get help. Once at this stage..progress is fast..don't forget the book store. A nice Latte and a browse thru the section..and maybe you will find an eye opener, or one that is full of examples of what some have done to help themselves. You should do this instead of a Doctor....it should be done in conjunction with one. He/she will gladly recommend some reading for you. Just an idea.....it helped me.

Emailed question

You are so right. I used to think I was the only one in the whole world who had this. Isolation..and when your parents do not recognise this...sad,sad,sad. and more alone. Only the dog loved me..I was convinced of this. I like that name MrBubble..do you chew bubble gum? Bubble gum is fun..so you must be fun! Or it is Bubble Bath..that is fun too..as long as you are not alone. Red

What is Agoraphoba?

Mr Bubble, I agree and the whoe thing boils down to this. When I get the gut..I have to take notice immediately af the physical feeling in the gut. If the twinge is there it is not avoidance..it's a "gut' If, on the otherhand, there is no"Twinge"..then I take it as avoidnace. I never say this outloud or my body will hear it and catch on.
