Oh man, handling a fresh pack of smokes almost did me in last Christmas. I bought a pack for a client as a little Xmas gesture, my old brand on top of it all! I must have stared at that pristine pack for 2 minutes, and then decided out of sight out of mind and locked them up in my mailbox until the next day when I gave them away. What a huge trigger that was! I'm so glad you made it through your trial by fire and as for cravings coming out of the blue always and forever....I'm thinking you're right. Hi there Rain! Hang in there! The urge to light up will pass whether you have a smoke or not - hopefully you'll keep on choosing the 'not'. I know that there are times where all the good reasons, all the self talk, all the water, nothing, nothing seems to be enough. Believe me, this feeling will pass! Splash some cold water on your face, drink a tall glass of ice water, chew on a cinamin stick - if you can, take a shower or jump up and down in your living room, maybe do some stretches and breathe, breathe, breathe! Moments like this are part of withdrawal and tend to be the nicodemons trump card, as many people give up in moments like this. Please persevere! You can get through this, others have gotten through it and so can you. these are the moments where you just keep on putting one foot in front of the other and trudge forward. It's a hard fight, but you can do this. Smoking is not an option. Which means you have to find some other way to deal with the moment, just like many others have - and you can too! This is a battle for you and the ND can see it's chances of keeping you in the tar encrusted pit of despair are waning and so it's putting up a fight to keep you enslaved to your addiction. N.O.P.E. You will not remain a slave to the nicodemon, you're fighting for your freedom and you will win this battle. I'm so glad that you mention that you still have a squirmish here and there with that old ND. time is on your side. My First Time Quitting with Support Group Online

There's something very powerful about talking to someone who hears exactly what you're saying and has been in your shoes. Something I said to myself a lot in the beginning was, Smoking is not an option. Once i had taken the weed out of the picture I was left to find some other way to deal with the moment. Anyone else out there quit with the gum?

Hi, I feel like I'm unusual in that I used the nic gum to quit this time. I chose the gum because it gave me control over how much nicotine I had in my system at any given time. If I was really in trouble I could have another piece, if I was coasting, then I could skip a few pieces. I guess the feeling of having at least a bit of power helped me to not feel so swept up in the withdrawal. I admit, though, that I used the gum for a long time - probably around 6 months, but by that time I was only having a piece once a week or so. I was lucky, the craves just got less and less on their own...and so I used less and less gum until I couldn't even be sure of when I had the last piece. Has anyone else had this experience with the gum? Oddly enough, the money I save by not smoking just seems to find another way to get spent :-) The cool thing is that by not smoking I was able to afford to take a leave of absence from work last spring and summer and live on my own savings. Durring that time off, I discovered that I really needed to change jobs, and so, have done so and feel much more like my own person. I'm doing GREAT

Somewhere along the line I was told that the chemicals in cigarettes used to 'trick' my body into releasing a bit of sugar into my bloodstream, this would give me the feeling that I'd just had something to eat, and hence the less I ate, the more I smoked. I used to get acid reflux every once in a while, but since I've quit that seems to have come under control too. Maybe it's because I have more actual food in my body instead of acid churning around because it's been tricked into thinking there's food.
