Hi Terry,
I don't know if this will help you but it worked well for me. :)
In the week leading up to my quit date, I didn't think about how difficult quitting would be but focused, and really concentrated, on how life would be as a non smoker. I pictured all of the ashtrays and their associated mess gone from my home. I pictured going to friends homes and not having to leave a discussion to go stand in the garage or outside to have a smoke. I pictured my trip to Cuba at the end of February without having to get outside before clearing security for that last smoke and then juggling luggage, smokes and a lighter to rush one down before getting on the bus to the hotel at the other end of the flight. And, most of all, I pictured telling my husband/son/mother/father that I had quit smoking! And by the time my date arrived, I wasn't nervous, I was was excited.
Like I said, this worked really well for me but this is such a personal journey. If any part of my method helps you out, then I'm happy to share.
Kathy

For myself, I smoke less at work than I do at home so that's why I set my quit date on a Monday. But for when I was home, I did plan to get some things done that I just hadn't gotten around to. I held off bathing the dogs until the smoke was gone from the house since I could only assume that they smelled of it. I've also defrosted my deep freeze, organized some files, cleaned things, etc. My house is looking good, though, and the dogs smell nice. :)
Really, your first few days you need to keep yourself out of situations where you tend to freely smoke if possible and keep busy.

It's been some months since I dropped by here although I keep meaning to. You know what they say about good intentions. :) Anyway, I just wanted to drop in to say thanks to everyone who was so encouraging and supportive during my time of need. I've just passed my 5 month anniversary and although I can't say it's been easy, it has been rewarding - partly in that I used some of the money I'd saved to buy a boat to play on this summer.
I can't say there have been no cravings, because there have. I know that if I let myself think about it, I can just taste how wonderful a smoke would be with my next coffee or cold beer. Even though there have been temptations, there have been no slips and I can only be grateful for that and be aware that I can't let my guard down.
Again, thanks to everyone who had a hand in keeping me propped up and to all of you that have recently quit or who are contemplating it, best of luck - you can acheive your goal with determination and support.
