Hobbies

14 years ago 0 1071 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
This is just the first of many hobbies I'm going to try that are on this thread.  I've wanted chickens for 11 years, so I feel this venture, is not an impulse.  I found the perfect spot for the chicken coop where it is kind of surrounded by a protective sound barrier to our city noise.  It's against the house, buffered by a shed and our RV.  There's a nice piece of land to privacy fence off for them to exercise and enjoy the fresh air.  I'm going to  get two bantam (small) chickens, so I can put them in a carrier and take them with me, if I need to for any reason.  I haven't been this excited about a project in a long time.  I've been going to the feed store for supplies and have been so focused on my new project that I haven't had any anxiety in my travels there.

I am also going to talk with our town counsilman and ask if the tornado siren tests could be limited to under a minute, so I don't have to evacuate my house with the pets twice yearly.  I'm going to be proactive and take his advice on how to get this changed.  If not, at least I tried.  I'm feeling a lot better, because I don't have to put off my dreams of having chickens when we retire in 17 years.  I can enjoy it now and it will make life a bit easier to take in this busy town/city of ours.  I have to give Davit credit, because I never thought of just having 2 - 4 chickens that I could put in a carrier and take with me.  I was thinking it was an impossible dream, because I thought I couldn't evacuate a whole flock for a siren test.  Thanks, Davit!

Sunny,  Absolutely, love, love, love, your snake sculpture!!!  I am an artist, so I would know :)

Red,  You inspired me to put up a photo of myself as an avatar.  I will put up my cat, Nala, next :)  Too bad the lilac bushes, I'm standing in front of, aren't in bloom.  My Italian Grandma had them on her dairy farm.  Everytime I smell them, I close my eyes, and I am a child on the farm again.

Teebs,  You've inspired me to bake again!  I have a secret recipe from my aforementioned Grandma, for her light and fluffy, cobbler crust, and tart Granny Smith, apple cobbler.  She has a secret ingredient, that's probably not so secret now, but back then, it was inovative.  I have an old fashioned blueberry muffin recipe I'm going to try as well.  I don't know if anyone else does this, but I call mine loaded muffins, because I put tons of blueberries in.  I'm hungry.

I'm going to hit "reply to discussion", before I get logged off, I'll tell about my new hobby adventure next.

I like the idea of making things (crafts) and selling at a neighbourhood market.  You not only can sell your product and make a bit of money, but you get out and about and meet some people.  Good luck.

Wow!  Great ideas!  I'm going to try a few or all of them.  I like to learn new things.  This will help me get out and do some research at the library or book store and out to get supplies and start me on my way.  Thanks for the jump start :)

Red good idea.

Farmers markets here are good places to meet people, most of the people go to socialize and buying is secondary. The Dunster one is a tailgate market, you can sell out of your vehicle and sit on the tailgate or a chair and talk to people.

Shari, I make wine as a hobby but my wine rack is full so now I make it to give away. I want to make hard cheese, I have made soap also. My neighbour borrowed my soap molds and forgot to give them back and moved so if I do that again I will have to make new molds. For those who don't drink , you can boil the alcohol off the wine and still have the flavour. You can also make it one gallon at a time and out of almost anything, my latest is potato water, oranges, raisins and brown sugar with a bit of cinnamon added, tastes like Sherri. I also make meed, honey wine. I have a few bottles of raspberry that are ten years old and really smooth.

I saw a plan for a small chicken house with doors on the outside where the laying boxes are, so you don't have to go inside to collect the eggs. some people have trouble with the dust off chickens. It looked like a tinny garden shed with a door on each side so you could rake out the bedding without going inside. The waterer sat on a block of wood and the feeder hung from the ceiling and the front had a big window for light. And the roost was below the window length wise so there was no crowding. About four or five feet deep and six wide and proportionally high so it did not look funny. with a small run in the front. This is what I will build if I get chickens again. My chicken house is too big for four chickens.

I like doing hobbies outside the house to challenge my anxiety. I love working out at the gym. Taking curtain classes there that suit me. I found the last time I went through this anxiety situation, repeated exposure to things that made me panic, " with the help of a loved one at first," got me out of the darkness and into the light. I got to a point where I didn't have a panic attack for 5 years. I lost my uncomfortable  feelings around people, and even over came my fear of driving over bridges. Trust me it was NOT an easy thing to do. But it WORKED. I lived through it.
Going back to hobbies, A friend of mine just got into stain glass. Its a wonderful and creative way to send your time. And if your comfortable doing things at home, this might be for you.

Shari,

I do a lot of photography, especially nature photography, so that gets me outside a lot and also gets me exercise. It's also my one true escape from all the anxious talk in my head as I get totally involved in what I am doing. I'm also also a bird-watcher, so in addition to going for walks and looking for birds I keep up several feeders at home which is nice too. Lately I've also been doing more baking.

I remember you saying your husband makes bird houses. Could  he do this on a larger scale with your help?  If so, I was thinking, if they have swap meets in your area or craft fairs maybe you could show and sell them there and in turn meet some new people and make some new friend.  Just a idea.....to ponder.  your friend,  Red

Hi Everyone!

I know there are a few threads on hobbies and summer time activities.  So, I hope you don't mind another thread.  I'm trying to fight off depression for lack of having friends to hang out with in person, so I'm going to shift my focus and do other things.  Here are my ideas:  building a chicken coop and pen, building a greenhouse to grow herbs and veggies, taking a wine making course.  I would greatly appreciate hearing what every one else does for a hobby.  Even if you're not one to post, would you be able to post a list of some ideas?  I'm feeling like I'm going inward again and pets are taking the place for the lack of people in my life.  The people in my area are very self focused an don't really socialize outside of their families or childhood friends.  I've lived here for 11 years.  I've tried a lot of resources already.  So, until I can move to the country, I need ideas to make in not so bad for living here.  Thanks, I appreciate all of you.
