Day 1

Hey Gus!  Glad to hear things are well, I am OK also.  Last night I had a few beers with friends but that was it.  At this point I don't think I need to stop all together but definitely needed to give up the everyday thing.  Normally after a few beers/drinks out I would come home and drink more.  Big test for me last night but I passed!  I was a little worried how I would feel today, wondered if it would be hard to stay away but it hasn't been too bad.  Got in a good workout and kept telling myself that the alcohol would just hinder muscle growth.  That thought got me through tonight.

It seems we are the same in using working out to get us through.  I have been working out for years but never admitted that the drinking was hindering gains from the workouts.   When I decided to do this, I had to be honest with myself about a lot of things.  Amazing how the human mind can rationalize just about anything!

Lynn how are things?  Hope all is well.
Last night and today going great for me. Nice to have a clear head all day and night. And no hangover to deal with is soooo good.

Thanks Dave for the enocuragement. It really means alot. It's hard talking to people close to you about this type of issue (at least I find it hard). A third party, arms length person is easier to converse with in certain circumstances.

Lynn, yes, I think we probably need to be careful with what we take as supplements to sleep. Consulting with your family doctor is important beofre you start any of that stuff. White noise machines help me sleep well too.

Last night went find. Lots of ice water. Worked out at the gym. And did sleep well last night. And most importantly, I hardly even thought about having a drink. I thought about it, and my thought was I dont want one. And the best part of all, a clear head again this morning, and no feelings of guilt or remorse.  That feels great. Thats the worst part of drinking for me.

Lynn, have a great day today!

Thanks for the encouragement Dave.  Yes, it is easier knowing someone else is going through the same.

Gus, unfortunately too much Melatonin (like alcohol) has a reverse effect on the body.  Small doses don't really put me to sleep and large doses cause me to be awake mid way through sleep.  It almost becomes a stimulant.  As for prescription, tried them, don't like them.  I decided I would suffer through the sleep issue and do this as natural as possible.

Hope your day has gone well and you are looking to Day 3.

Hi Gus\ Lynn,

Great work so far. It really helps when you have others that are moving along at the same pace and time frame, whether it's the first day, or week, etc. The first week can be a real roller coaster so hang in there and tough it out. Urges and cravings are irritating and anxious but it WILL get better.

Keep up the good works.

Best regards,

Dave

Lynn, forgot to mention, I had same problem last time I tried quitting. I had a hard time trying to sleep. Two things you can use. Melatonin is a perfectly safe over the counter drug you can try. In and out of your system after a few hours, and naturally occuring in your body already, as I understand. Or you can request a perscription from your doc, altough there's some risk there of dependency, so talk to your doctor about that option. Good luck now. Have a great day!

High five Gus!  Now we are on to Day2!  Trying to remember this feeling of not being hungover, hopefully this thought will get me through hard times to come.  Didn't sleep much last night, one of the reasons I started drinking more in the first place, but still feel better than usual.
Again Gus, good luck today!

Survived Day 1 with plenty of water and trip to the gym last night for a workout. Just trying to go one hour, one day at a time. Had a pretty good day. And now it's day 2 and I'm not hungover. I have a clear head. Which feels great. Good luck Lynn. One day at a time.

Hey Gus.  This is my Day 1 as well.  What you spoke of sounds a lot like me.  Wanting to for a long time but it never really working out.  My day has gone OK.  How are you doing?

Hi Gus, welcome to the site, and hopefully your last day 1 !  Taking the first step, making the decision to abstain or reduce is really frightening. Well, it was for me. I relapsed so many times, I almost gave up hope. I found this site really helpful. There are so many knowledgeable people who have been thru it and understand. You can gain a lot of insight from their experiences. What works and what doesn't is different for everyone. I also found the rational recovery website very helpful. It showed me how to take back control over my life and never have another day 1.

Wishing you all the best, keep coming back.
