Coping with Day One

18 years ago 0 2462 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Congratulations, Shannon, on ONE FULL DAY. That is awesome and I remember exactly what that felt like. I hope you give yourself a good reward because you deserve it. Now you know you can get through a whole day without smoking, and you didn't die and you didn't kill anyone (I hope!) Remember to take one day at a time. And one hour at a time, too! Sometimes you might even have to say "I'm going to wait 20 minutes." Go do something else, and then come back and say "I'm going to wait 20 more minutes." One step at a time, Shannon. Don't get scared or discouraged. It CAN be done! Remember N.O.P.E. -- Not One Puff Ever! Cigarettes Not Smoked

I was thinking about my first day and how I felt that day - December 14, 2004. I hadn't planned ahead...I just quit, so I didn't have a clue what I was in for. Here's how I felt: nervous, shaky, hyper, scared, hungry, unfocused, excited, eager. Why did I feel that way? Because my body was going through Day One of withdrawal from the most addictive drug in the world. I was determined to ride it out, because even though I had no idea what was ahead, I knew that the longer I hung on, the greater the odds that I would get to Day 2. So knowing what I know now, what would I do differently? 1. I would stay home from work. 2. I would drink lots and lots of ice water. 3. I would have stocked up food supplies and I would eat something every two or three hours. 4. I would wear my pajamas all day. 5. I would have my favorite music on the CD player. 6. I would sit at the computer and search for quit-smoking information. 7. I would lay in bed with the covers over my head as much as I wanted to without feeling guilty. 8. Every hour on the hour, I would reward myself -- a great big hug, a Dove dark chocolate, a really wonderful stretch. 9. I would start my quit journal and begin with a list of all the reasons I was quitting smoking. I would also make a rewards plan. 10. I would tell those closest to me to please love me no matter what happens and that I love them no matter what I might say. If you are on your first day, I hope this helps you. If you are beyond your first day, please feel free to add or comment. Rusty :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/13/2004 Smoke-Free Days: 614 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 17,207 Amount Saved: $2149 Life Gained: Days: 84 Hrs: 12 Mins: 57 Seconds: 29

Another one...I would cut down on the coffee, and switched it for a variety of decaf teas.
