Do you think you ever get back to weight you were when you smoked?

It appears that I've gained 5 lbs in the 2 plus weeks since I quit. I can handle that but not more. I'm 6 ft. tall and weigh 200 lbs.

Hi Lindak, I made it back to my pre-quit weight. I probably gained all total 10-12 lbs. during the first year. I have always been tall and thin...5'7", 120(ish) but obesity runs in my family. I was scared to death of gaining weight especially since I'm a middle aged woman. I tried very hard during my quit not to overeat. The weight came on anyway. I can tell you this, 9 months is a wonderful long time to be quit smoking but it's probably not long enough for your body to be finished with it's 'new self'.....meaning, depending on how old you are, the changes/adjustments to your new 'system' are still taking place and you may have to wait a little longer for all you're doing to be successful. It did me. Probably somewhere in my 3rd year. But then I'm probably alot older than you are. I am very active like you. I only go to the gym 3 days a week though.I have been told (hearsay only but I've heard it many times) that you need a day in between lifting weights for your muscles to properly build up (or something like that). I walk, swim and dance every chance I get. I have a very healthy diet without it being drab at all. I eat alot of fish, vegetables and fruit. Don't give up hope, Lindak. Just keep trying to contain the weight gain and give it a little more time. Remember smoking took a toll on our bodies. My best to you. Congrats on 9 months! Hi Lindak I bet that you look and feel GREAT! My guess is that the extra 10 lbs looks good on you. I was surprised that so many people noticed a difference in my colour, complexion, etc (I guess when we smoked, we kinda looked like we were dying) You are eating healthy, you are exercising regularly and you have been quit for 9 months. Congratulations to you! Do you think you ever get back to weight you were when you smoked? In my case probably not, nor do I want to. Skinny might be sexy on some folks. On me it just looked unhealthy. I don't think anyone among us whether they started the quit overweight or underweight will be worse off by gaining a few pounds. Losing the tobacco habit is far far more important. Lindak: Maybe. I think that depends on the individual. Most people I know gained about ten or twenty pounds. At least that's what I'm hearing from 5 people even though they didn't increase their calories, kept a food journal, ate healthy and exercised more. They can't seem to take it off either. On the other hand, I have one good friend who actually lost weight without trying when she quit. Lucky girl! I'm eating less than I did before I quit, keep a food journal and exercise twice as much in an effort to offset a possible weight gain. My quit date is 9/1/07 and I appear to be holding my own right now. If I was still smoking I'd lose weight on this food program so weight gain looks to be a given for me without a big reduction in daily calories.

Yes, you CAN! I gained about 15 pounds and after I had been smoke free for about four months, I felt comfortable enough with my quit to start addressing the weight gain. I gave this issue the same time and attention that I did my quit and now I am five pounds less than I weighed when I quit smoking! And, I'm still going! If you're having trouble dropping the weight, maybe you should consult with your doctor or a nutritionist. Hang in there.
