Seamus, Take this failure and learn from it. Nothing is a waste if put to good use. I would not be where I am now if not for my past failures. Let me rephrase that:.....if not what I LEARNED from my past failures. Your reasons to quit must be very strong. You have to want to fullfill your reasons so badly that whatever it takes to quit is worth it. Every year it gets easier to want to quit. Smokers are the outcasts...the outsiders in society now. We went through allot to be popular when we "forced" ourselves to smoke.....now we to be popular we need to "force" ourselves to quit. You can do this. BJ: You are doing so great!! Your really are. It is a hard thing to do...but even though it seems like a long time to get through a quit.......looking at the big picture....it isn't that long a time after all the years we were addicted. Hang in there. I used the gum...and it did well by me. BJ Good for you on day one...Just keep moving and understanding daily the why, where and when of your addiction...Knowledge of this addiction is the number one ingredient of success. Knowledge of onesself and our relationship to the addiction is number two. There are reasons that otherwise sane individuals would inhale poison about once every hour of our lives. We must search for those reasons and then substitute effective behavior for the self destructive behavior of smoking... Glad that you have joined us in our mutual quest here, there are many who will invest in your quit and help you reach your goal... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 195 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,850 Amount Saved: $1,365.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 15 Mins: 24 Seconds: 19

OK, I got through day one, just barely, it was awful, I tried to go cold turkey and truly felt like I was in a fog all day, a bit grumpy (my boys would disagree and simply advise to "stay away") - I also felt so sad, teary eyed and cried a few times, I think we have to recognize that quitting smoking is a real loss for many of us, cigarettes have been with me for 30 years, longer than some friends, they were dependable, reliable, soothing, exciting, everything I ever needed them to be, and it was easy to ignore the habit and bad side effects, the pleasure was so fine. So, I will try and do this properly: "Adieu to la cigarette" - Goodbye, old friend, goodbye, I know I will miss you, I will think of you often, I will wish we could meet up again, but I will remember how you made me feel, and I will concentrate on the already felt good side effects of our relationship ending, I feel them only after a day, imagine how I'll feel in a week, a month, a year... without you!! PS, the nicorette gum is helping, had 4 yesterday, the cold turkey was crazy for me

Seamus Rusty is correct...we must learn how to quit...You just got a little message out of the ether there...Start focusing on the why, where and how of your smoking and you will quit... In order to do this thing we must stand naked in the harsh light of our own self awareness...That is hard to do, because to some degree and in some people (like myself)...our smoking has grown out of a rejection of a part of ourselves...Can you think of any other reason a perfectly sane individual would willingly inhale poisonous, gas on an hourly basis? I can not. I only return to the notion that smoking in many ways is a self punishing act...We are both the jailed and the jailer, the observed and the observer...Breaking free can only be accomplished by granting yourself permission to do so and that means discovering those things in us which we find unpleasant or not acceptable. And once we discover what those things are begin to accept that we are imperfect humans and one of our jobs here is to accept our limitations and use all of our potential to move as CS Lewis says "further up and further in" Here's to you my friend...You can reach higher levels of liberation, the key is in your pocket, now just look around and see if you can find the lock... nonic My Milage: My Quit Date: 12/25/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 195 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 5,850 Amount Saved: $1,365.00 Life Gained: Days: 35 Hrs: 14 Mins: 45 Seconds: 43

Seamus, eye-opening experiences like these get into our psyche and make us even stronger in our desire to quit smoking. Be sure to write about this and how you feel about it. These little serendipitous events lead to awareness and awareness is a giant leap toward your final quit. YAY!
