I use visualization. It used to work a lot better than it does now. I used to visualize myself lighting up, drawing the smoke into my lungs and then having a coughing spasm until I blacked out, just like I used to. Sometimes, now, my husband will help me and we'll discuss smoking and coughing to blackout. It helps. Last night, nothing was helping. I woke up about 3 am with the worst craving. That early, a sleeping pill was out of the question. I had to get up in three hours. The tension made my hand go numb as usual so I was in absolute agony. I laid in bed trying to deal with it for two hours. Finally I got up took a couple of aspirins, popped a half a gum, and put an electronic contraption around my neck that viabrates and eases the tension in my neck making my hand go numb. Later, I'll use the TENS unit. I loved all these ideas....I find myself trying to glorify smoking now and again, and yes wondering what it tastes like but I am 23 days today nicotine free and I WONT START at day one again!!!! I just try to remember all the positives about not smoking....I smell better, I dont have to be so embarrased in front of so many non smokers! I LOVE being a non smoker!!! Hello Carylene, I like your imagery better. Mine is more parental stubbornness. When the junkie tries to encourage a smoke I discourage it like it was a child making a bad decision though with much less consideration I would show a child. A typical exchange would be the junkie notioning, "A smoke would be good now" and in response I would think, "I thought we were done with that; you can't be serious. Smoking is always a bad idea; leave now." I don't show my junkie any consideration or respect. It exists at a primal level. It will try our defenses for weak spots and when it finds one it will exploit it. I've been at that level of my quit where it will find one here and there. This is much easier to manage than first couple of weeks when I was countering several triggers at a time. As I said from the start, I like your imagery better. This is a good post, thank you. Deep breathing is great when I feel myself getting frustrated or angry. It makes me take time out, and I think that is what smoking used to do. Just take a couple of steps back mentally.

This may sound nutz, but I pretend to smoke...inhaling and exhaling just like I did when I smoked. I tell myself it's deep breathing, but it's just pretending to smoke. It works for me...without ever touching a cigarette. These are all great coping strategies. Do whatever it takes....just don't smoke. A great strategy that I used quite a lot during the first two weeks was deep breathing. It helped relieve the anxiety that I was feeling during this time. Breathe in slowly while counting to five. Then breathe out slowly while counting to seven. You guys are doing great!
