Quitting

Lookingglass, Hang in there! Get back to basics if you have to and employ the same strategies that got you through hell week. This is just a bump in the road. This will pass. Keep persevering! Danielle ______________________ The SSC Support Team

For the last week or longer, there's been that steady drone in the background. The craving is there for a couple of minutes, then it's gone for a couple of minutes, then it's there for a couple of minutes...etc., and I'm sick of it. I'm OK...I'm not going to smoke... I can still enjoy a lot about my life.... I'm just frustrated and angry, and there's nothing surprising in that. After all those years of smoking every 1/2 hour, I'm lucky that all I have to contend with is a little frustration, disorientation and discomfort. I certainly do identify with some of the posters who have said, lately, "I just wanna feel normal for a few minutes!". I want to feel normal too... only I know that I haven't felt "normal" since I was 13 yrs old. And I guess that's what I want...even though I have no real recollection of what that felt like. I know everything I need to know, and I know just exactly what I need to do... but sometimes the bottom line is... it's gonna hurt, and I have to be OK with the hurt. Sometimes the only solution is to take it. Thanks freemom and lainey. It helps to know that others experience it. It probably doesn't help that my semester is over in 3 weeks and I still have a lot of work to do. I'm under a lot of pressure, but I can do this, I have to do this. My parents pay $13,000 a semester, I cannot fail my classes. The thing is, I've had a hard time concentrating on my paintings because I used to smoke while painting/drawing, so now its like I have a re-train myself--That takes a lot of time. But, I haven't slipped once since I haven't been smoking almost 6 weeks ago. I have to keep that in mind and know that and I will get through this. Artist, It will get better, I promise you. Tomorrow and every day is a new day to a new you! You can do it. I have had those same problems with other quits and I know lots of members here have posted about the blues. Read, read, read, there is always someone here who has been thru the same things. Try the deep breathing excercises, ice water. I do the straw thing, because that works for me. Focus your thoughts on how much better you can breathe, how much better your energy is becoming. Go for a long walk, pamper yourself, watch a good movie...you see the theme here. The other day I saw a documentary about people living on the street and my thoughts were, geez and my biggest worry is about quitting smoking...How lucky am I? Hope this helps... :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,016 Amount Saved: $422 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 21 Mins: 47 Seconds: 46

Artist - a lot of us have found that a positive attitude has helped. Look at all you are gaining by quitting NOT what you are giving up by not smoking. We all have a choice every day, to smoke or not, CHOOSE not to smoke - it puts you back in control. Another thing is to use your anger and frustration in a positive way. Research the tobacco companies and the ingredients in cigarettes, learn how they tricked us into smoking more and becoming more addicted. Apply that anger to the addiction and to the voice that tries to tell you you're missing something. Tell it to go away. Tell it you don't smoke anymore. Kick it's ash! By the way, Congrats on almost 40 days. Cigarettes Not Smoked

18 years ago 0 8760 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
Artist, Thanks for sharing! Knowledge is power and many have found it helpful to read up on the harmful effects of cigarettes. With regards to the sadness, there is no set timeline as everybody is different. Some members have found it helpful to find new outlets for their emotions such as journalling or to implement a relaxation routine. Danielle ____________________ The SSC Support Team

Hey Lainey. I know it has to do with attitude, for yourself etc. But, I can't seem to get past the depression part, crying etc. Cigarettes always masked my feelings so I didn't cry much before. I wonder when it will end? Everybody keeps telling me it is going to get better, I just don't know when. Hi Artist! Thanks fot the recommendation. I too, am on the patch, and I also smoked a pack a day. I am halfway through my program, and finding it very good this quit. I really find my attitude was key this time. Other times I guess I depended more on the patch to "get me quit". This time I realized, the patch is just a tool to help me quit, it is not going to do it for me. I still have to do the work, I still have to get my head in the right place...I am an addict. I have to get it thru my head that smoking is no longer an option and I have to find something else to deal with the emotions or the stress or whatever it was that made me smoke. Once I got that thru the old brain, it got much easier. Someone on this site the other day commented that they didn't realize how psycologically smoking was attached to us, and that seems to be key. It is very much a "head" thing. Hope this is helpful for your quit, I see we are at the same stage. Please feel free to join the "March Mellows" who all quit in March. It is very very helpful to interact with someone at the same stage and go through it together! Have a great weekend and celebrate your 40 days tomorrow! :8|: My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,011 Amount Saved: $422 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 21 Mins: 16 Seconds: 2
