Quitting

18 years ago 0 13 logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo logo 0
lainey, yes I was prescribed wellbutrin almost a week ago. I haven't had the patch on in over 24 hours and feel the same as when I had the patch on. The sadness comes and goes, sometimes out of nowhere. I think it has to do with my insecurities. Interesting about the not feeling normal thing. It really doesn't feel normal yet, being a nonsomoker. I remember though, during my prolonged withdrawal while I pretended I could control my addiction, having a smoke after a week, and being really surprised at how it changed my mood. It felt a lot more "normal," but I remember thinking I didn't like how that felt anymore, like my mind was all cramped up. Sometimes this feels like a walking dream, but I figure it's going to take at least a year for a neurology that has always been adapted to having nicotine in it. I mean, even as a child, my parents smoked, so I'm sure I was getting it secondhand then. I know I'm a lot more even-tempered now than when I was smoking. Thanks, Lainey! You're right. A big part of this is just that thing in my head that's built a detailed picture of who I am. And it just can't quite believe that there's been some changes. Well, I'm not going back... so whatever we call that thing... the id, the ego, the super-ego...whatever the heck it is... it needs to get the message; This is who I am, and I don't smoke. Artist, I can't offer much help about the patches because I had to go cold turkey due to health reasons. I have had some sadness off and on since my quit and boy, does it ever suck. I've had it over the last several days up until today. The sadness has just come and gone since my quit. I think a lot of it is my own fault. I actually dodged doing some things. Before my quit I would weed the bluebonnets then sit down and smoke. I'd schedule a lot of work and then take a smoke break. I did stuff like that all day long. Since my quit, I've dodged doing a lot of those things for fear that doing them might trigger me to smoke. So, I wound up not doing a crapping thing but sitting here in my house, feeling sorry for myself, and not learning how to do all of those things without having that cigarette. I should have been doing all of those things and using my coping skills. The longer I dodged doing things, the more fatigued I felt and then depression/sadness would settle in. Once the depression hits, it's even harder to get back up on your feet. Today, I literally forced myself to go to town for 3 hours. I feel really good now. I know that a fair amount of the sadness is related to our Quit. Danielle's post will help you there and she's helped me to push passed mine. I know the sadness will pass. Keep posting and reading, okay? Ask any questions you want or need to ask too. Believe me, your posts will help others as well. Lookingglass, turn your thoughts to the future, for it will be better tomorrow! You are going to feel better and you are going to see those great kids of yours grow and become wonderful adults, and you are going to someday see your little Grandkids that will call you "Papa" and you're gonna love that alot! It will be better, I know it will! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,020 Amount Saved: $422 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 22 Mins: 14 Seconds: 51

Artist, you may want to check in with your Doc, there are some atrategies for the blues, and I mean vitamin B complex and such remedies that might help you out. With Nicotine affecting the brain all those years its no wonder it takes a while to shake out all the "cobwebs" if you may, and get things back to normal. And time, good old time is still the best healer. LOL (Imagine that coming from me, I am the most impatient person.) I do hope you keep on posting with us. You will get thru it! :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,019 Amount Saved: $422 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 22 Mins: 11 Seconds: 36

Artist, I have always considered myself a VERY difficult nut to crack when it came to quitting smoking. Over the years I've tried and tried, and kept going back to it mainly because of the depression associated with the quit. I was a pack a day smoker.(25 - 30) This time, I've just passed three months smoke free, the longest in 24 years! I could never have done this cold turkey. I wouldn't have entertained the thought. This is what I've done - 6 weeks - 21mg patch, 4 weeks - 14 mg patch, and now I'm working on the 7 mg. I'll be coming off that next week. I'm also taking 150mg wellbutrin, twice daily.(Zyban) And I fully plan to stay on that for a while yet. These NRT's have helped me succeed this time. Although you should speak to your doctor and work out what's right for you so that you don't feel the depression as strongly. This journey DOES get better. The "miserable" moments are definitely fewer and further between. Hang in there, this really DOES get better. Cheers, Jan My Milage: My Quit Date: 1/13/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 91 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,753 Amount Saved: $819 Life Gained: Days: 10 Hrs: 7 Mins: 38 Seconds: 13

Know what you mean about feeling normal... and yes, its been so long ago that we lived smoke free, who remembers that. I guess we have to create our own "new" normal. Do you at least have a few periods of time where you forget about it, even temporarily? Do you think its because of the break, more free time and all? :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/5/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 40 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,019 Amount Saved: $422 Life Gained: Days: 4 Hrs: 22 Mins: 10 Seconds: 27
