The Last Quarter

This is a very depressing thread!!! Instead of putting percentages on our lives lets just live every day as if it were our last. Now that we are non smokers those days will be spent spending less time pushed to the periphery of society with a filthy habit and more time doing things we REAllY want that are truly fulfilling. PS. Butterfly Swimmer, age has nothing to do with anything. You should be as proud as anyone here of your (commendable!!) quit!! (I am younger than you and I have never been prouder of myself than with this accomplishment) My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/9/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 171 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 1,887 Amount Saved: $605.34 Life Gained: Days: 11 Hrs: 8 Mins: 4 Seconds: 45

Butterfly Swimmer, I beg your pardon but yes you are still young. I had some fleeting attempts at quitting when I was your age but nothing terribly serious. I commend you for taking charge at this point in your life. My doctor told me if you quit before you're 35 that several years from now your risk of cancer will be the same as someone who never smoked! Hooray for you!!!!!! Keep your quit! Agreed. Life is a long series of "todays". And that's always where life is lived; today. Yesterday has been written. Tomorrow is utterly contingent on this moment. In his recent book about aging in a healthy way, Dr. Andrew Weil said we can't escape death. But we CAN do everything we can to have a long healthy productive life with a quick decline at the end, rather than a long slow sickly painful death. I believe that this is what life is about...to use every moment we have in a productive and positive way that benefits us and society, and to always know that the kingdom -- i.e., what we have been given -- is right here, right now. Let's not think in terms of remainder or what's left. Let's think in terms of "What can I do today?" pete, You really struck home with your post. I agree with Dunedad that we never know when our last day is... it could be tomorrow, it could be 50 years from now. When I first quit, I was actually ashamed of my age. As far as I knew, there weren't any quitters younger than me on this site (I was 28 at the time) and I felt kinda dumb for "trying" to quit so young. I felt like everybody else on this site lived it up until they were in their 40s or 50s and that I was kinda behind the times for quitting at such a young age... like I wasn't doing it right or something. Well, over the last 21 months, I've learned to be grateful for the opportunity to quit for once and for all at such a young age (although I'm not really young now... I'm 30), and that I may have the opportunity to live far longer because I am quitting NOW, instead of waiting another 15-20 years. So thank you Pete for your post. It really struck a chord with me tonight... and congrats on your 5 months. Way to go! Crave the Quit! Oh one more thought.........You could be down to your last 1 percent, IE: car accidents, train accident.. plane accident... chiuaua accident (it could happen). Point being; no-one knows when the grim reaper is going to come knocking down the door. I know you won't waste 25%-50 % (it could happen) waiting for ol' grim to show...lol My Milage: My Quit Date: 11/7/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 141 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 2,820 Amount Saved: $690.9 Life Gained: Days: 20 Hrs: 13 Mins: 16 Seconds: 55

What's up homes? Long time no read...I am speaking for myself...What a co-inka-dink both of us on tonight same time!! My b-day is coming up in a few weeks too, I think since I quit smoking I can extend what "midlife" actually is right? The only life that matters is the one we are stuck living in.....sO LIVE IT UP!! My birthday is coming up, and suddenly I find nyself measuring time as loss. I'm thinking that 75% of my life is gone; I have 25% left to choose how to spend. I hope you have more, but regardless, I hope you can see numbers and math, and will join me in making the remainder matter. How or what... up to you. The point is making the remainder -- what's left -- matter. I greet my friend Dudedad (whom I know as Dunedude) as an example of living a life that matters. Addiction to the next nicotine hit is not living, it's surviving. At some point, we choose life over survival. It still sucks not to smoke, at least for me, but breathing and living are helping me add day and day and blessing and blessing on that wonderful meter thing that keeps track of our progress. --peteg My Milage: My Quit Date: 10/30/2006 Smoke-Free Days: 148 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 7,448 Amount Saved: $814 Life Gained: Days: 27 Hrs: 4 Mins: 53 Seconds: 48
