Good Morning Bear I found that out too when I quit. I thought the first 3 days were not too bad and then it hit where I had to deal with so many things that caused triggers. It does get better and easier. The more triggers you conquer (sorry about the spelling) the easier it gets. Hang In There!!! You can do this. We are all with you. :) My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/1/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 22 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 558 Amount Saved: $110 Life Gained: Days: 2 Hrs: 8 Mins: 46 Seconds: 5

Heh Bear. It is amazing how much response is generated which is why this site is to great. It is just fabulous how we all share the same feelings, symptoms, frustrations and yet we all stick together. It just feels good to open this site every day and read the responses...it is like a breath of fresh air. Day 12 for me today Bear and I feel great. You can do it. Thanks Jan58,Martha,LadyJ,Phil,Aunt Deb. Nice to talk to sombody in the same weight class. LOL A lot of insite and truths in this group!!It,s kind of interesting the kind of behaviour we accept as normal ( smoking & drinking). I grew up with it as i,m sure some of you did. Unfortunatly the companys that produce this stuff forgot to tell us it was addictive.I have decided to tackle both these problems at the same time. For me these 2 are like handmaidens. It,s going to make it a little tougher but this site and the people here are giving me a lot of confidence I can do it.I look forward to chatting here because of so many people who are fighting the same battle and are so supportive of mine Thanks again L&K,ss Bear My Milage: My Quit Date: 3/21/2007 Smoke-Free Days: 2 Cigarettes Not Smoked: 41 Amount Saved: $20 Life Gained: Days: 0 Hrs: 12 Mins: 54 Seconds: 44

;) Hey 1939bear...welcome to the SSC Aunt Deb here..56 yr-old Grandma, 30+ yr smoker, Quit once for 10 years..."cold-turkey"...started back like a fool for a stupid reason during a tough time through pre-menopause,,,oh welll...if I had known then...what I know now...LOL (story of our lives ..right? (I would be a 25 yr NON-SMOKER) I'm not wollering in pity here...just trying to help others see where I went wrong...so they can prevent it from happening. ;) For example: I know now...that nicotine masks depression, and I know that we compensate or self medicate our depression with...two very legal substances...(nicotine & alcohol) bear...when I quit smoking for that 10 years...my alcohol consumption increased...what I should have done was go to the Doctor for help...but didn't recognize my unhappiness as depression... I used the new med Chantix this time...to quit...it works beautifully, believe me....I know how hard cold-turkey is and I have used NRT's with no success...but others have used them successfully. what works for one, may not be anothers cup of tea. I don't like pills either...but when you have smoked for as long as some of us have and are desparate to give up the addiction... I quit the Chantix at the beginning of the week...and with no ill effects I might add. It makes you forget about smoking basically because it affects the brain sort of like nicotine...in the pleasure receptor of the brain. We use smoking and alcohol to hide our inner feelings (how often have you thought in some tough situation...I need a smoke to calm down?) We suppress our thoughts that we need to verbally express. When we learn what this addiction is :eg: Nicodemon and his relatives, then we find the key to disengaging ourselves and truly breaking free... we learn to communicate with others...really communicate!! We no longer need the crutch. You have to remember bear, most of us were only children when we started smoking...we didn't have a chance to learn how to communicate growing into our adult lives. Some of us used other things as well, like alcohol (that was the biggy in my teen years) Please read bear, past and present posts...go way back and catch up on educating yourself into the insight that others have shared in their jo

Hi Bear. I'm 66, smoked for 45 years, advid smoker. Today I started taking Chantix because so many people I know have been successful with it. Look it up on the internet. I'm scared of facing the future without smoking but all these people can't be wrong so I know there's life after quitting. Like you I'm pretty sedentary but am determined to start walking and eventually work out at a gym. I think you need to decide which to give up first smokes or booze (check out AA for booze it's a support group too). Think of the quit as taking baby steps, one at a time. Chantix blocks the receptor in your brain that makes you want to smoke that's why I think it will work for me because my largest problem was the mental dependency. Hey let's both do it!! I think we can!! Wow Bear, congrats on taking the plunge! I have no doubt that you'll be incredibly glad you did. Look at ALL those cigarettes that you haven't smoked already. That is AWESOME :) Some of the patterns we developed as smokers are harder to break than others. Is it possible to put the computer in a different spot? It might help break the old association. What about a walk around the block when the craves hit? You'll find some new things to throw in the mix. What about things that you couldn't do as a smoker? Maybe a movie in the middle of the day - without wanting to run out to catch a cigarette. Checking out your local library or bookstore? Life truly is better on the "other" side and there is SO much more freedom on this side of the fence! You'll get through this awkward bit and be so much happier for it.
